DOI/CrossRef
The purpose of this study is to identify the international citation statuses of domestic journal articles that are not registered in international citation index database, using the citation information of CrossRef. Also the purpose of this study is to prove the potentials of CrossRef’s role as a supplementation for domestic citation index database of which the coverage is limited to domestic citation status.
I conducted a citation analysis of articles published on four CrossRef-registered domestic journals during the 9 years in 2002 to 2010. Then, I analyzed the duplicity of the analyzed citations against that of articles published in WoS(SCIE) and SCOPUS In addition, I analyzed the similarities and differences of citation analysis on four natural science journals for CrossRef, WoS(SCIE) and SCOPUS to reveal how well CrossRef reflects the citation information of the two international citation databases.
The results of analysis on articles that are referencing the 9-year span collection of articles published in domestic journals mentioned above, is as following:
First, analysis on articles that reference domestic journals using CrossRef revealed that 87.8% of WoS(SCIE) articles are duplicated, and 90.3% for SCOPUS. In case of journals, WoS(SCIE) showed 88.8% and 92.6% for SCOPUS. This shows that most of the citation information of CrossRef are journals and articles of WoS(SCIE) and SCOPUS.
Second, only 17% the referenced articles are domestic and more than 80% are foreign articles. The numbers indicate that CrossRef has a rather high proportion of foreign articles.
The comparison of CrossRef, WoS(SCIE), and SCOPUS using the above analysis reults is as following:
First, the fact that the number of records and titles of CrossRef was higher than others was shown in the analysis of data range and journal duplications among the three index citation databases. Also, 82% of the 8500 SCIE journal titles, 68% (13,249 out of 19,500 titles) of SCOPUS journals were duplicates of CrossRef journals.
Second, CrossRef’s the citation count and average citation count of articles published during 2009 and 2011, which is the common registration period of the three index citation databases, were either little less or close to those of other databases.
Third, CrossRef showed per-year lower citation count than other databases in analysis of published articles in the three year time period in 2009 to 2011. However, the difference has been decreasing in the recent years in a similar fashion to the previous studies which showed similar results in DOI citation count analysis of medical journals. Based on this result, we surmise that expanding the number of journal titles or altering the target field of study would show the same results.
Fourth, the comparison of the proportions of foreign and domestic articles from 2009 to 2011 in the CrossRef, WoS(SCIE), and SCOPUS showed that they all tend to have higher percentage of foreign articles and lower percentage of domestic articles. Another aspect shown in the analysis is that the self-citations in domestic articles proved to be rather high.
Fifth, the per citation frequency analysis of the articles in the same time period using h-Index and g-index showed that the more frequently citation articles had lower number of articles cited in CrossRef. Also, CrossRef had more articles that are cited only once than other databases. This shows that relatively fewer citations are made through CrossRef than other databases.
Sixth, I also conducted an analysis on differences on several factors among the three databases for the articles in the time period that have been mentioned. This did not show a meaningful difference, thus letting us conclude that the averages of the three databases are close.
This paper showed that CrossRef includes most of the articles registered in WoS(SCIE) and SCOPUS and the ratio of foreign articles proved to be higher than that of domestic ones, although limited to 4 titles of domestic natural science journals. The implications of the result is that an analysis on CrossRef article can be used to reveal the foreign citations for domestic journals and to confirm their international position in terms of academic impact.
