Subject : A Study on Craft Education Program for Children by Storytelling
- Based on Museum Experience Education -
The 21st century Knowledge flows in the direction of consilience, and the culture and arts education also flows in the direction of placing a high value on individual creative ideas based on a system blending diversity with art and other areas. Meanwhile, as overall digitalization of society has been accelerated and daily life has becomes multi active, people miss the analog era and need a convergence system that they can breathe with the contemporary generation at the same time.
This system is the reason why education in schools and museum education outside of schools should be interconnected. This is because the museum contains the characteristics of the times, which covers past-present-future, and each identity, and art museums also can read the diversity and trends of modern and contemporary art and communicate culturally. Therefore, museum education, which is being activated along with school education, is an another education field as an alternative education taking place outside of school.
This thesis aims to study a craft education program for children by storytelling that can be experienced in connection with museum, which is a convergence space, and suggest producing process and results in practical teaching and learning curriculum. First of all, the researcher studied the system, structure, and methodology to seek the direction of storytelling and develop craft education programs for children based on the experience education for children in museums at home and abroad. The research conducted from this point of view was carried out in the order of theoretical consideration, methodological study, case and analysis, education program development, actual class, and verification.
Since this study is for children's museum education, it was intended to resolve craft education based on storytelling methodology, which becomes popular as an effective methodology in various fields and areas. Storytelling is a medium of communication that conveys historical messages in exhibits when connected to museums, and, at the same time, it brings a motivation and an immersion effect in which children can interact with interest and fun. In addition, the stories created by storytelling provide an opportunity for visual communication, as constantly interacting with children and producing creative sculptures or crafts. Storytelling was verified that was an effective methodology for interpreting and creating exhibits from various points of view also in the case of domestic and international experience education, so, it sought the connectivity and derived necessary factors for the program development, and advanced the researcher's precedent study on culture and art education for children. As precedent studies, the researcher planned three programs of <The earthenware of the turtle ship explained through Myeongnyang> in 2015, <The story of Oegyujanggak Uigwe returned to Korea after 145> in 2016, and <A pottery granting the wishes for the foundation of the Joseon Dynasty and animal Haechi a animal preventing the fire> in 2017 and applied them to educational sites, and the three programs were produced as teaching methods by the Korea Arts & Culture Education Service have been established the foundation of the class through the repeated process of implementation and modification. Since then, it has planned two programs besides <What is it for, Ttong Ttong, General Ttong? > at the National Folk Museum of Korea and went through each curriculum, and verified through the contest of the Korea Arts & Culture Education Service and the National Folk Museum of Korea for the objective verification.
A total of five craft education programs for children by storytelling based on these studies were developed as follows.
First, since this thesis is an education for children, it created storytelling with the theme of historical stories based on the museum's exhibits.
In other words, the theme of the program was to select the historical figures and stories of the museum's exhibits and it was carried out around storytelling. In particular, since it is a historical story based on exhibits, for the sake of interest, it represents the program by mixing the narrative and fictional elements appropriately among introduction, development, turn, and conclusion.
Second, the themed story mediated in the craft production created the symbols contained in the story by extracting elements of storytelling and planing it interesting for children's eye level to consider the learner's cognitive development. The learner focused on children in the elementary and middle school, corresponding to the preoperational stage of Piaget and the gang age of Lowenfeld. It is designed to be possible to set the theme at eye level and to link it with other subjects because it is the growth period that children of this period are free from self-centered thinking and understand others and are conscious of groups. and it induced them to grasp the relationship between objects, and also considered the characteristics of the gang age, which is a three-dimensional and realistic expression, not a process of schematization, in the activities of creating representations. In addition, it was designed to reproduce events and to develop activities through simulation because it's a period when they can make team work.
Third, the themes of storytelling which was designed to realize the representations created by storytelling to the experience education were subdivided into long-term and short-term types by session and blended with craft and other fields or subjects. If the existing craft education was a making activity based on production only, this program designed the historical themes obtained representation from each storytelling to be mediated by finding and exploring crafts and various common denominators. The convergence medium was approached by a crafty method blended diversity based on storytelling which is an inspiration for materials and materials, which are the essence of exhibits, even if not necessarily linked to art education, such as the result analyzed in the study on overseas museum. The craft materials mediated with story were various materials such as clay, Hanji, rubber plates, soap, schrinkles, plastic cups and wood and the convergence with other subjects appropriately applied the elements of Korean classical music and film related to history to the class including the historical stories, social subjects, and science subjects based on museum classes.
Fourth, the developed education program based on the established methodology was decided after repeated implement and modification and applied to the classes in the school education as field trip and post learning of museum by self-observation. The participants for the class were children of elementary schools in Korea, and it was set and demonstrated to be linked to school education. The program conducted in school after visiting museums was able to solve the problems caused by time and space limitation of museum which failed to accommodate a large number of people, including the absence of museum education and group viewing.
Fifth, the conducted craft program for children by storytelling was applied to actual classes in order to find out its effect and conducted a post-survey and went through the stage of the verification.
The verification process of the planned program was designated as <The earthenware of the turtle ship explained through Myeongnyang> out of a total of five programs and the survey was conducted by post learning of visiting museums and survey after proceeding class for the fourth grade of elementary school students. The analysis results of the survey are as follows.
First, among the eight similar museums related to the program, 『The story of Chungmugon』in Gwanghwamun and 『War Memorial of Korea』 in Yongsan showed a high distribution in the multiple-response question of which museums the children visited. For distance reasons, the close locality played importantly because the selected subjects for the education was elementary school children in Seoul, and it was the result of teachers' selection criteria through the connection between program and the museum they have been to the most frequently visited field trips. In addition, although 『Shrine』 and 『R.O.K Naval Academy Museum』 were local museums, many children visited it. In the light of these results, similar museums will be able to exchange educational information through the network. It is thought that the museum education will also activate local museums, providing educational opportunities for local people, and induce children's visits from various angles if studying historical relics and materials based on the locality.
Second, in the question about the most interesting field of class based on storytelling among the questions related to storytelling in <The earthenware production of the turtle ship explained through Myeongnyang>, 'Hakik-jin tactics' scored 4.53 out of 5 Appeared high. The interesting areas of craft activity also appeared to be the most positive in 'the turtleneck earthenware production' and 'Hakik-jin tactics', and the result is a simulation effect that reproduces Admiral Yi Sun-shin's story based on storytelling and the Myeongnyanghae that led to the Turtle Ship earthenware production. The simulation that the entire class participated in is the gang-age's collaboration class, where each other can become Admiral Yi Sun-shin or enemy soldiers and experience the waters of Myeongnyang Sea and it can be said that storytelling according to the cognitive development stage of children, has been proven to have been applied effectively to museum education
Third, 'the turtle ship earthenware production' out of the classes by session in the craft class was 4.60 points, showing the results of the survey as the most interesting class. It can be said to be the result of a craft class that links the principles of turtle ship, a flatboat, which understands and produces the characteristics of the southern coast of Ria to its craft approach, which can be expressed naturally through the material of soil, and history in a fusion of social and scientific subjects.
Fourth, it can be said that it has been shown to be an essential element in the visualization methodology obtained in a storytelling craft education system that can develop visual literacy through raising awareness and criticism of others as a child learner appreciates and understands the results of others in the appreciation and presentation time at the end of class of the earthenware of the turtle ship.
Fifth, it was shown that it greatly helped school education through craft classes. In addition, the historical understanding part of Admiral Yi Sun-sin through storytelling also resulted in 83.5% positive reason was because storytelling in connection with a museum forms a fairy tale sympathy to help understand history, and it naturally works in conjunction with school education.
Sixth, it was found that class <The earthenware production of the turtle ship explained through Myeongnyang> was 78.9% related to the question of whether it was related to the exhibits of museums visited by children. It was able to confirm that the educational program which was studied on the subject based on the exhibits in museums and planning intention was utilized for effective learning in connection with the theme of the museum.
Seventh, in the questions of understanding improvement of Chungmugong Yi Sunsin and revisit intention to the museum, it showed the positive intention of revisit through the understanding the museum as 84.5% of understanding improvement and 72.7% of revisit. Therefore, it was verified that the craft education by storytelling served as an effective learning tool for children's museum education.
A good museum education program plays an important role in the education of members of the society, especially children, as much as a great exhibition. It can be said that the craft education program for children by storytelling is the result of a class that led to a return visit by improving children's understanding and quality of learning,
The common ground between the craft program for children by storytelling conducted by the researcher and the experience programs of the oversea museums are as follows.
It can be said that the commonality between the program conducted for 4th grade elementary school children and the domestic museum education is the methodology described by issuing historical themes through storytelling. Gorye inlaid celadon, metal type, Baekje incense burner, 500 Arhat sculptures and the turtle ship, Eugye, and Aspiration in this researcher's program are different yet epic objects in the same history. The factor by wearing clothes of storytelling based on these exhibits to raise importance of experience education and bring attention with interesting motivation shows the importance of the object selection criteria when planning a program in museum education. In addition, the common ground with oversea museums is that it was to carry out the class by applying it with various craft materials and other fields related to storytelling. Of course, there are differences in applications, but it is considered to reflect the differences between the museum and the complex cultural space depending on national identities and the living culture, and the application form is similar.
On the other hand, the differentiations of the program produced by the researcher are as follows.
First, it is to seek long-term programs using storytelling. Each of the themes shown in the three long-term programs are both museum exhibits and historical stories, and it does not constitute an efficient learning system unless it has a long-term structure because of cutting off the art history or artistic activities. In particular, craft education is not only limited to the idea, t like the material exploration shown in the oversea education case, but also to be able to have a system for criticism by looking at the entire production process and continuing to the product. In addition, the short-term and one-time program has a limited storytelling and exploring process and it also leads to the limitations of time to review and critique the its own results. Of course, the museum's post learning materials or labels and other materials as alternatives are prepared, but it should expand the breadth of learning with long-tern storytelling experience education because the quality of long-term education cannot be complemented.
Second, museum education for children can be made known and knowledgeable using storytelling, even if it is not necessarily a famous artifact. The museum has tens of thousands of artifacts but it is true that there is a lot of sleeping artifacts that we just pass by or can't understand when watching them. The way to wake up these artifacts depends on the educational methods that creating fun and curiosity by storytelling, not through the exhibitions of museum.
The various cultural heritages of the museum, formed as a core cultural and artistic space in modern society, are the symbols of silent icons and children's ability to create and express their own stories through exhibits is a talent that only they have. Museum education must be carried on in the form of storytelling before the emotion contained in such exhibits cools down, and should be oriented toward education that satisfying the five senses by producing symbols.
The craft education for children by storytelling suggested in this thesis is not a universal case. However, it is a research that the researcher applied to actual classes and corrected them for five years through trial and error, and it is thought that it's proved also to be a positive educational achievement in light of the results of the survey, Therefore, it is hoped that this study can be used as an effective methodology for teachers working in the field as an efficient teaching and learning material. It is also expected hat the craft education programs for children by storytelling based on these positive results will be applied worthily to museum education as a fun and interesting educational material for children.
