The objective of this study was to verify the effect of elementary school student’s human rights respect experience, depression and human rights awareness on discrimination experience, and then look into whether depression and human rights awareness have a double mediating effect in the relationship between elementary school student’s human rights respect experience and discrimination experience.
To this end, data from 4th to 6th graders in elementary schools were used among the ‘2019 Survey on Human Rights of Children and Youth’ conducted by the National Youth Policy Institute. This survey was conducted between May and July 2019, and samples were extracted through stratified multistage cluster sampling based on the Statistical Yearbook of Education, and the Data of 2,912 out of 2,979 elementary school students in the 4th to 6th grades were used in this study, except missing values.
In order to examine data, this study used the SPSS 25.0 program and the PROCESS macro program. Cronbach's α was calculated for each scale to check the reliability of the scales used in this study. Frequency analysis was conducted to understand the general characteristics of study subjects. And descriptive statistical analysis was conducted to understand the level of study variables. Pearson's correlation analysis was conducted to analyze the relationship between such major variables as human rights respect experience, discrimination experience, depression and human rights awareness, and the mediating effect of depression and human rights awareness in the relationship between human rights respect experience and discrimination experience was verified using the Process Macro No. 4 Model proposed by Hayes (2013), and the significance of the mediating effect was confirmed by the Bootstrapping-test technique.
Study findings are as follows:
First, as for the general characteristics of human rights respect experience, discrimination experience, depression and human rights awareness, out of 4, the score of human rights respect experience was average 3.25; depression, 1.56; and human rights awareness, 3.34. In the case of discrimination experience, the score was analyzed by taking its natural logarithm (LN), thus resulting in its maximum value of 1.31 and average value of 0.08.
Second, as for the correlation between study variables, human rights respect experience had a significant negative (-) correlation with discrimination experience, whereas human rights respect experience had a significant negative (-) correlation with depression and a significant positive (+) correlation with human rights awareness. On the other hand, discrimination experience showed a significant positive (+) correlation with depression and a significant negative (-) correlation with human rights awareness, and depression showed a significant negative (-) correlation with human rights awareness.
Third, as for the effect of elementary school student’s human rights respect experience, depression and human rights awareness on discrimination experience, human rights respect experience had a negative (-) effect on depression, a positive (+) effect on human rights awareness, and a negative (-) effect on discrimination experience. Depression had a positive (+) effect on discrimination experience. And human rights awareness had a negative (-) effect on discrimination experience.
Fourth, as for the double mediating effect of depression and human rights awareness in the relationship between elementary school student’s human rights respect experience and discrimination experience, depression had a mediating effect in the relationship between human rights respect experience and discrimination experience. In other words, it was verified that elementary school student’s human rights respect experience directly affects their discrimination experience, but indirectly affects it through the mediation of depression as well.
In conclusion, this study provided an opportunity to expand the existing research results by verifying the dual mediating effect of depression and human rights awareness, which were not covered in previous studies, in the relationship between elementary school student’s human rights respect experience and discrimination experience. This study is also meaningful in that it has suggested practical/policy-level alternatives to enhance children's human rights respect experience, thus making them healthier mentally and cope with discrimination issues actively.
