It is inevitable that movies dealing with the “division,” as their themes or materials, are created in Korea, the world’s only divided country. This is why a unique genre of “division films” came to exist in no other countries but Korea. The division of the Korean Peninsula, which continues today, brought forth movies on the division representing the perceived needed change in social aspects in different periods. There have been great variations in the same genre, from the initial anti-communist propaganda movies to the recent blockbusters. For a long period of 70 years, division films have been destined to go through changes, development, and regression, in both industrial and cinematic texts, and to represent actively contemporary socio-political aspects, making them a reliable text to study verisimilitude, an indicator of the correlation between movies and reality or how accurately movies represent reality. Studying contemporary division films with an eye on Korea’s political situation provides a clue to understanding the cultural-political relationship between movies and society.
Division films incorporate the political reality of Korea and cultural verisimilitude of viewers taking advantage of generic verisimilitude of genre movies, such as melodramas and action films. After the release of the division film Shiri, the tendency of using division as a material for films has accelerated, especially combined with genre movies such as melodramas and action films. The emotional excess of the former and the adrenaline rush of the latter provide a perfect framework for a successful commercial film. In the process, melodrama films describe the relationship between North and South Korea as a romantic relationship, with the division of the country as the biggest obstacle between the two lovers, and the epic comes to completion as the characters depicting the couple fall in love and overcome the hurdles between them. Meanwhile, the political reality of the division becomes a mere setting in action films: a hard body from North Korea rampages through South Korean streets in spectacular action scenes. Finally, the North Korean character chooses family values over ideology, and the movie ends with the masculine North Korean hero showing his love for his family. South Korean audiences applaud the gorgeous North Korean hero protecting his family, and the role is likely to be played by one of the biggest stars in South Korea. This popularity proves that South Korean moviegoers of the 2010s were, culturally and politically, flexible enough to go beyond the anti-communist perspective and see North Korean movie heroes as characters built by the advantage of the masculine image of the stars.
The objectives of this thesis are to examine changes in division films in line with Korea’s political situation and in the context of verisimilitude and genre variations; to discuss the influence of politics and government over movie texts; and to suggest how they could become commercially viable. The commercialization of division films since Shiri exploiting genre movies coincides with the regime change in South Korea. Therefore, to examine the changes during the 20-year period since Shiri, this thesis divides the period into the post-Cold War era (1998–2007, the progressive administration of Kim Dae-jung and Noh Moo-hyun) and new-Cold War era (2008–2017, the conservative administration of Lee Myung-bak and Park Geun-hye). Based on this classification, movie texts and the related contexts will be considered to shed light on the relationship between division films and political reality. The present study will likewise examine how division films represent the reality of changing times in terms of verisimilitude. Finally, the thesis will take a look at audience acceptance, discourse formation, and the political, sociological, and cultural issues surrounding the movies, as well as the public opinion they create.
