원격무선추적은 발신기(LTM Single Stage Radio Transmitter, 0.38 g), 수신기(R2000 ATS receiver, Advanced Telemetry Systems, Inc., Isanti, MN), yagi 안테나(Three element Yagi antenna) 및 차량용 안테나(Roof mounted antenna)를 이용하였다.
This study was conducted to analyze the home range and echolocation call of Pipistrellus abramus. The home range variation in the non-reproductive season and reproductive stage is studied to determine the home range size of P. abramus. Additionally, the basic echolocation, echolocation variation according to environmental type, and the development of the vocal signal are studied to understand the nature of echolocation.
1. Home range in the non-reproductive season
The analysis of the home range of P. abramus in the non-reproductive season was performed on day roosting sites of P. abramus. Bats were captured on May 2009, and 6 individuals (3 males and 3 females) were radio-tracked. The transmitter (0.38 g), receiver (R2000), and three element yagi antenna were used in radio-tracking. Data analysis was performed with ArcGIS 3.3 and Animal Movement Extension 2.0. As a result of the home range analysis, the average range was 14.46 ± 3.44 ha; females had 16.83 ± 1.96 ha while males had 12.08 ± 2.96 ha. In this study, females had a wider home range than the males, but there was no significant difference. The maximum distance from the day roosting site was 468.73 ± 94.38 m on average.
2. Home-range variation in different reproductive stages
To analyze the home range variation of P. abramus in accordance with the reproductive stage, the reproductive stage was divided into three stages: the pregnancy stage, the lactation stage, and the post-lactation stage. For this study, 3 individuals were used in each stage among 9 individuals. The transmitter (0.38 g), receiver (R2000), and three element yagi antenna were used in the radio-tracking. Kernel home range (KHR) and minimum convex polygon (MCP) analysis were performed by using ArcGIS 3.3 software.
The home range in the pregnancy stage was MCP 100% 13.46 ± 1.84 ha, MCP 95% 12.28 ± 2.15 ha, and KHR 50% 3.00 ± 0.71 ha. In the lactation the home range was MCP 100% 8.13 ± 0.23 ha, MCP 95% 7.73 ± 0.63 ha, and KHR 50% 1.84 ± 1.05 ha. The home range in the post-lactation stage was MCP 100% 125.58 ± 97.77 ha, MCP 95% 123.89 ± 97.73 ha, and KHR 50% 28.61 ± 26.78 ha. As a result, the home range of P. abramus showed significant differences according to reproductive stages. The home range was largest in the post-lactation stage and smallest in the lactation stage.
3. General patterns in echolocation call
The pulse-duration (PD), pulse-interval (PI), and peak-frequency (PF) were measured to analyze the echolocation patterns of P. abramus, Rhinolophus ferrumequinum, Myotis petax, Eptesicus serotinus, and Miniopterus schreibersi. Echolocation calls were measured using the oscillogram, sonogram, and power spectrum. The pulse of P. abramus began with an frequency-modulation (FM) signal and ended with a constant-frequency (CF) signal while the pulse of R. ferrumequinum began with a short FM signal followed by a long CF signal and then ended with a short FM signal. In the pulse from M. petax, E. serotinus, and M. schreibersi, only a short FM signal was used without any CF signal. P. abramus and R. ferrumequinum had 45 kHz and 69 kHz peak frequencies, respectively. The species that showed similar pulse shapes, M. petax, E. serotinus, and M. schreibersi had 47 kHz, 27 kHz, and 52 kHz peak frequencies, respectively.
4. Echolocation variation according to behavior and environmental type
To analyze echolocation variation according to behavior and environmental type, capture and recording was conducted on the day roosting site of P. abramus. Environmental types are divided into "emergence after sunset", "movement after emergence", "rice field", "forest edge", "open space", and "housing area". A significant difference was found in echolocation of P. abramus with regard to the behavior and environmental type. Only short FM signal was used at the emergence after sunset. In an open space, it was found that the long CF signal was used. In other environmental types, they used mixed FM and CF signals although there was some difference in pulse shape. A significant difference was found in the PD, PI, PF, starting-frequency (SF), and ending-frequency (EF) between flight to foraging activity and flight to move between habitats. During the flight to move between habitats, most pulses consisted of narrow band FM signals with long PD, which is suitable for searching for insects. In the flight to foraging activity, they used broad band FM signals of short PD for broad search and precise detection of the insect’s location.
5. Development of vocal signal
Newborn individuals were used in analyzing the development of vocal signal. In contrast to adult bats, infants or young bats emitted calls characterized by multi harmonics and variable signal patterns. Pulse patterns of signals were irregular for 2 days, and gradual FM signal was observed from a 10 to 20 days. About 30 days after birth, short FM signals were detected. At 40 days, the bats gradually began to emit signals similar the adult. As the infants grew, the PD, PI, and number of harmonics (NH) were reduced. On the other hand, the PF, SF, and EF were increased. The most considerable change in the PI was 5 days after birth, and the PD, PF, SF, and EF showed significant change in 25 days.
In this study, I found that P. abramus had a home range as large as 14 ha during the non-reproductive season, while it had a small home range of less than 10 ha in the pregnancy and lactation stages. After the reproductive season, however, it had a home range of more than 100 ha, which indicates that the home range of P. abramus depends on its reproductive stage. During the reproductive season, P. abramus used a short-distance foraging area due to its increased weight and lactation, but after breeding, it used a wide-range foraging area mostly near bodies of water. Therefore, it seems necessary to provide a research and conservation management strategy differentiated according to its reproductive stages.
P. abramus uses echolocation, one of the most representative ecological characteristics of insectivorous bats. They were found to mix FM and CF signals and emit different echolocation calls according to the type of habitat. Other species of bats having similar pulse patterns were found to have different PF, indicating such patterns can be used to identify discrete bat species. Overall, I expect that the results of this study will be used to establish strategies to preserve bats through bats' identification and classification of foraging areas by using their echolocation.
