The ultimate of beauty culture is completed with hairstyle. The basic goals of hairstyle depend upon and are based on face; it exists ultimately to make face look better. Incidentally, human faces appear different from each other due to inherently individualized combinations, so it is impossible to find out a single hairstyle best fit for everyone, let alone find a hairstyle most suitable for individual anyone. Besides, contemporary popular hairstyle has been so far applied subject to trends of the day, rather than focusing largely on complying with individual characteristic features. But now is the time to develop diversified cosmetology in pursuit of individual customization, not simply following conventional popular trends. For this sake, it is prerequisite to attempt objective and metrical analysis about phenomenal trends of beauty culture up to date. To metricize hairstyles, this study began with collecting a herd of completed hairstyling works for beauty culture, so that it subdivided data with correct frontal and lateral contour into several categories. Out of 1781 hairstyling sheets, total 194 sheets(97 persons) available for final metrical study herein were selected. Right and left pupulare were lined up for location, while measurements were conducted via a computerized facial measurement program. In cosmetic hairstyling works, any difference in individual capabilities or viewpoints of hairstylist was excluded for measurement in order to mark up any hair contour formed as shown in hairstyling photographs. In this study, hairstyle was classified depending on length and shape of hair into 7 categories, i.e. short straight, short wave, medium straight, medium wave, long straight, long wave, and up style respectively.
In bregma height, up style type reached the highest level. Depending on hair length, short hair type arrived at higher level in bregma, which was followed by middle hair type and long hair type respectively. In addition, each wave type reached higher level in bregma than each straight type. In terms of mandible, both uplifted hair type and long hair type showed pointed mandible more than any other type.
For square mandible, uplifted hair type and short-haired straight type comprised significantly small distributions. In further view of correlations between lateral contour and hairstyles, convex facial type had the higher tendency to belong to uplifted hair type than other types, while medium type showed uniform distributions in regard to desired hairstyles. On the contrary, concave facial type had an absolute tendency to love long hair type far more than up style.
In view of possible correlations between hair shape and facial size, it was found that shorthaired wave type reached the highest level in facial size, while longhaired wave type reached the lowest. And it was notable that medium hair type reached the highest extent of facial contour covered with inner hairline.
In the comparison of correlations between hair width and facial width, i.e. the ratio of hair contour shape and facial area, it was found that the shorthaired, medium-haired and longhaired type accounted for higher ratio at glabella, subnasal and gnathion respectively. Hopefully, such a lot of correlations as above will be available as a guideline for consideration upon the hairstyling design for beauty culture.
The viewpoints about beautiful face vary depending on historical backgrounds without a hitch. In addition, there are ever-increasing demands for beauty culture in parallel with economic growth, and higher aesthetic interests as well. Hence, for the benefit of more scientific studies on the beauty culture, it is necessary to make efforts to seek for metrical theories or methodologies as possible.
