A maritime Multi-Function Radar, located at the top of the integrated mast for the integrated exhibition operation of naval traps, performs surveillance and reconnaissance missions in the maritime environment. It is operable in the maritime environment, and a housing-type structure is applied to protect the internal components. This structure requires lightweighting to meet the low center design requirements of naval traps.
When examining the development cases and research related to dynamic properties of lightweighting in existing structures, it is important to perform lightweight design of the structure. This includes assessing whether associated changes in dynamic properties such as natural frequencies or mode shapes fall outside the system's vibration environment range or avoid specific frequency bands. This design direction necessitates additional analysis or validation through environmental testing to confirm the impact on internal components due to changes in dynamic properties. This may lead to an extension of the development period and an increase in costs.
In this research, design is conducted to lightweight structures while maintaining their dynamic properties in order to minimize the impact of changes in dynamic properties due to lightweighting.
For the lightweight design of the radar structure, the base model is divided into a design area where lightweighting is possible and a non-design area where maintenance is required. Through modal analysis of the base model, we identify the natural frequencies and modes within the design frequency range and identify the target frequencies to be maintained using Effective mass analysis. As a means of controlling the natural frequencies of the structure, we examine the trend of frequency values based on the weight of the design area. The weight for maximum stiffness is defined as shape density in the topology optimization and can be verified through optimize simulations. However, shape density results for one-axis forces are difficult to specify in the dynamic properties, and problems can arise where unique modes not seen in the base model are generated in the results. Therefore, in this study, we use a composite shape formed by shape density combination results for the X, Y, and Z axes of the model. The range for the shape density variables for each axis that forms this shape is determined as the minimum and maximum values that do not change the mode shape and data on frequency changes corresponding to changes in shape density for each axis are collected to create a mathematical approximate model. Using this, we can derive combinations of variables for each axis that satisfy the values within 5 % deviation from the target frequencies of the base model, thus obtaining a lightweight model that maintains the dynamic properties, including natural frequencies and mode shapes.
From this research, it is anticipated that devising lightweight design with maintain dynamic properties will minimize the impact on internal and external components due to changes in dynamic properties caused by lightweight design. This is expected to reduce costs and time for further analysis and testing. Additionally, it is anticipated that among the research objectives, the method could be employed to implement a model that has been altered to specific values within the frequency variation range for each mode, as required.
