The purpose of this research is to construct a theory of education as a consistent explanation system by interpreting Michael Polanyi's epistemology from a metapractical point of view. Education is an important socialization activity which helps to make humans more human, and deals with people's minds. A theory of education should be able to comprehensively explain not only practical issues appearing in educational activities, but also intrinsic values related to the cultivation of human minds, in order to be theoretically sound and reflective of a complete system.
Michael Polanyi (1891-1976) was a physical chemist and philosopher who attempted to read the essence of knowledge not only within academic boundaries but also in the broader context of history, culture and society. Therefore, Polanyi presents a new perspective on the acquisition of 'personal knowledge' thus attempting to restore human intrinsic value which had been denigrated by the objectivistic view prevalent since the 16th century. He explains the value of knowledge by associating the epistemic subject who internalizes it with the essence of knowledge. While his theory has a primary interest in exploring the nature of knowledge, it specifically emphasizes the mind of the epistemic subject in its explanation. In order to comprehend his epistemology from an overall perspective and make out its significance, an exploration of the associations of the epistemic subject with knowledge is essential. Specifically, it is necessary to try to understand what kind of characteristics are present in the mind of the epistemic subject and what it means by the participation in the process of acquiring knowledge.
Starting from these issues and thoughts, this research attempts to obtain a theoretical system by explaining Polanyi’s epistemology using components of metapraxis, that are two-fold in structure; personal attitude and circularity.
First of all, this study is based on the premise that the significance of epistemology can be discovered by understanding Polanyi’s thoughts as a whole; therefore, the first priority of this research is to clarify key metaphysical thoughts in the theory.
The two-fold structure, logically depicts that both 'world’ and 'mind' consist of upper and lower layers. Polanyi's tacit knowing serves to function as background knowledge which reality affects, thus it becomes the phenomenal equivalents of reality. Additionally, 'knowing' can be construed as an exterior expression of the mind which can be accomplished by contacting the outer world. Similarly, Polanyi's explanation of knowledge internalization seems to be the cyclical movement between the upper and the lower layers of the mind, and 'reality' is construed as a part of the educational objectives in life which can be established through the educational process.
Polanyi's concepts such as 'indwelling' and 'internalization' in his internalization of 'personal knowledge' are used for explaining the process of obtaining knowledge. It can be clearly seen that those explain the epistemic subject and knowledge in the process of knowledge internalization as being interpreted by a metapractical point of view. That is the movement of 'world' and 'mind'.
This research attempts to interpret the Polanyi's epistemology from a metapractical point of view. It primarily contributes to revealing that his epistemology coherently presents the process of knowledge internalization, the epistemic subject's attitude toward knowledge, and the internalized knowledge. By doing so, it can be asserted that the theory is to explain the dynamic processes of educational activities. The metapractical interpretation of Polanyi's epistemology makes it clear that Polanyi’s concept of ‘reality’ is metaphysical, and that it corresponds to 'the unmanifested mind' found in Neo-Confucianism theory, which is the state of being ‘before the activation of the mind’. The logical premise presented here is that personal knowledge is accompanied by its learned reality which makes it clearer than when we initially obtained the said knowledge. We get our concepts of reality which are fused with the associated knowledge they were generated from. That this acquisition of knowledge and focus is geared toward a restoration of human nature. The pursuit of knowledge of all humans can be summed up as as cultivation of the mind.
The metapractical point of view makes it possible to show that various concepts exist systematically and coherently in Polanyi's epistemology, and educational activities are justified as dynamic processes of teaching and learning knowledge by an 'integration of knowledge and awareness'. The discussion of his epistemology suggests that knowledge internalization and justification for cultivating the mind indicate that the theory is true theory of education focused on fundamental issues of education, manifestation and acquisition of the mind in humankind.
