This study aims at investigating a Trans-Identity theory as a new methodology to have a significant analysis of narratives in popular culture, which are transforming quickly in the digital era. The special and unique characteristic of narratives of the digital era is that media and its contents are separated. Technologies, which are continuously developing, use images, videos, and others as tools in order to gradually strengthen verisimilitude and imitate the actual reality, and new media, brought by these highly developed technologies, integrate the perception of a viewer with the reality, in turn raising the degree of immersion. While stories, i.e. contents, are moving outside of the frame of media, not only narrative description grammar is changing, but also a method of enjoyment of narratives. In this era where a single narrative world is differentiating and aggregating over various media and promoting an enjoyer to actively engage in and experience the narratives, we should focus on empirical narratives that are actually working rather than media as tool. Empirical narratives have almost the same composition as narratives even though there is a slight difference that empirical narratives are played by various media including voice, image, video, and space, other than simple texts. Therefore, readers of texts and enjoyers of empirical narratives accept narratives in the almost same context. Thus, the author assumes that the key property and factor of storytelling of today, the era of ‘digital and information revolution’ is a variety of subjects. Not only the characters leading a story in a narrative, but various subjects, including content producers, directors, enjoyers and various other subjects have become core factors of the cultural contents industry in this era of ‘digital and information revolution’.
Although Trans-Identity is an on-going theory, which has been recently claimed, since it uses ‘subjects’ as its keyword, it has a huge potential to expand its humanistic reasoning onto various fields and it might be meaningful to investigate the narratives of new formats from the perspective of trans-identity. However, since this phenomenon that various subjects are newly emerging is not only due to the age of time, but also a sociocultural phenomenon of post-modernity, this theory of Trans-Identity, re-conceptualized by Lim Dae-Geun in 2016, could be used as a discourse for describing and re-configuring various issues of the reality rather than being limited to problems associated with characters and storytelling of narratives as he claimed.
Therefore, this study starts from the reflective thought about various discussions to clarify new narrative methods of today, including a trans-media theory, and it aims at theorizing the concept of Trans-Identity as a theory to substitute such previous discussions. The author has been trying to reveal that the Trans-Identity storytelling is valid not only for characters of narratives, but it could be also a valid theory for describing the entire process of consuming, accepting, and enjoying contents by multiple subjects outside of the narratives. Therefore, the author has coined two terms – Based Narrative and Extended Narrative – in order to make an analysis for narratives sharing common features. Herein ‘Based Narrative’ is defined as a group of narratives in series. For instance, it refers to the franchise superhero series of Marvel Studios, constituted with 23 movies from <Iron Man>(2008) to <Spider-Man: Far From Home>(2019). ‘Extended Narrative’ is a concept which includes all-types of auxiliary narratives that have spread from Based Narrative. And it refers to all the attempts made to strengthen the worldview of a narrative though various media and promote an enjoyer to participate in the narrative. For instance, it could be defined as the entirety of experiences of an enjoyer made through ‘Marvel One Shot’ series, supplementing the worldview of MCU, ‘MCU Tie-in Comics’ series, game contents based on MCU narratives, various merchandise products, and theme parks.
So, the most important purpose of this research is to reveal the significance of a Trans-Identity theory for analyzing a Empirical Narrative. ‘Trans-’, a prefix of Trans-Identity, is a concept which presupposes a wide field in which objects are intersecting and operating with each other. Therefore, the author was trying to investigate a narrative platform as a field or a network. For this purpose, in Chapter 2, Part 1, the concept of ‘Identity Bridge’ by Lim Dae-Geun is expanded and the structure of a huge congregate of narratives, constructed with weaving and crossing of identity bridges in series is newly defined as ‘Identity Web’, and in Chapter 2, Part 2, subjects that forms conceptual features of Based Narrative are investigated. In summary, the most important factor in the identity bridge of Based Narrative is a character. The aspect that Trans-Identity is formed by gathering of characters of individual narratives and influencing each other acts as the power to expand the time and space, its background, and its identity web also expands exponentially. In addition, each character, having an attractive narrative on its own, acts as an entrance to invite the audience to the identity web through the means, of empathy, and mediates between the produced and the audience.
At the time, the concept of ‘multi-verse’ becomes important for the Trans-Identity storytelling, which is based on the identity web. From the perspective of producers, the multi-bus can be easily used to operate multiple identity webs or to search for a new narrative possibility of a single identity web. In this case, the multi-verse can have a property of ‘a means to guarantee the freedom of narrative progress’ in both cases. On the other hand, from the perspective of audiences, the multi-verse becomes a basic method to enjoy Trans-Identity storytelling contents while they are riding on the identity web, a non-linear narrative web, and transforming into active audiences. When empirical narratives, in other words, ‘my own experiences’ are performing as a medium to accept these narratives, many narrative worlds, as the number of persons enjoying the narratives, become created. These narrative worlds are the universes of Based Narratives differentiated via multiple enjoyers, and the multi-verse created by enjoyers on their own.
After addressing the conceptual features of Based Narrative, the conceptual features of narrative worlds are investigated in Chapter 2, Part 3. It is described that a Based Narrative and an Extended Narrative have relative weights, a Based Narrative has an influence over an Extended Narrative but not vice versa, and a Based Narrative expands over time and space while an Extended Narrative is a strategic means to get into a daily life of an enjoyer.
In addition, two arbitrary concepts, ‘para-contents’ and ‘void space of meaning’, that could be used in the discussion of narrative worlds, are introduced and it is emphasized that a single content of today might extend over multiple media and they would need physical spaces when they are manifested in the real world.
In Chapter 3, discussions on Based Narrative in Chapter 2, Part 2 are exemplified by using MCU of Marvel Studios as example. First, in Chapter 3, Part 1, it focuses on Iron Man(Tony Stark) and Captain America (Steve Rogers), the representative characters of MCU, and their appearances in 23 movies of MCU, so-called Infinity Saga, and analyzes the Trans-Identity patterns of Iron Man(Tony Stark) and Captain America(Steve Rogers) in consideration of Enneagram and ‘Character Types in Story Contents’. In Chapter 3, Part 2, it examines how identity bridges of multiple characters form identity webs while being woven due to team-up bridges. Especially, it analyzes the trans-identity patterns of characters in the team-up bridges to which multiple subjects are interlinked and reveals that characters accomplishing trans-identity through the corresponding identity bridge become narrative characters of the corresponding team-up bridge by analyzing major team-up bridges of MCU including <Marvel’s the Avengers>, <Avengers: Age of Ultron>, <Captain America: Civil War>, <Avengers: Infinity War>, and <Avengers: End Game>.
In Chapter 4, discussions on Extended Narrative in Chapter 2, Part 3 are exemplified by using MCU of Marvel Studios as example. In Chapter 4, Part 1, a methodology for complementing or supplementing the identity web structure of MCU with trans-media strategies in the operation of multi-media auxiliary narratives is exemplified by using ‘Marvel One Shot’ images and media operation methodologies for ‘MCU Tie-in Comics’ Series and others. In addition, a methodology for expanding the identity web structure of MCU is investigated by examining Marvel’s drama series. In Chapter 4, Part 2, a phenomenological action arising when a theme space in the phenomenological space provides an empirical narrative and performs as a para-content is verified by using MCU-based theme space as example. Character merchandise products are analyzed as statue images and it is claimed that they could perform as mythological icons for the enthusiastic enjoyers of the identity web rather than simple goods. In addition, it is examined that the Marvel Collection Store acts as the Pantheon of the modern age from the perspectives of structure and configuration. In Chapter 4, Part 3, the images of Marvel Comics, cognitively expanding the identity web of MCU in the virtual space using the multi-verse approach, as well as the aspect of digital games that cognitively strengthens the experiences of enjoyers of the identity web of MCU in the phenomenological realm in the reality of the enjoyers are addressed.
Through the flow of these discussions, the author has been trying to examine and point out the narrative relationship, identity, and a passing-over phenomena of multiple subjects, such as character goods and theme parks which are operating on ‘open’ narrative media, which often considered to be daily spaces’ other than ‘closed’ narrative media such as books and films, i.e. Trans-Identity. Therefore, this research is written at the transition period when Trans-Identity storytelling is expanding to its discourse, according to the words of Lim Dae-Geun, and it provides a theoretical foundation for claiming that a trans-identity theory is useful in explaining and re-configuring real-world issues other than issues of re-enacted characters or storytelling of narratives.
Through this research, the author hopes that it could initiate the attempts to have systematic empirical cases for the discourse of Trans-Identity, which has been explored solely for its potential. It is highly hoped that future studies could reveal that behavioral patterns of multiple subjects in the real society beyond the scope of the story-telling web structure could be accurately interpreted within the theoretical frame of the Trans-Identity storytelling and substantively demonstrate the moment of expansion of the discussion about Trans-Identity onto the discourse of Trans-Identity.
