This dissertation pursues the possibility that both the indirect object (IO) and direct object (DO) are assigned structural Case. By assuming that both the IO and DO are assigned structural Case, A-and A’-movement of DOCs can be accounted for simply from a point view of minimalist syntax. Furthermore, this analysis also sheds light on the cross-linguistic patterns of Raising Constructions.
Cross-linguistically, mainly three types of passivization patterns are found. In American English-type languages, only IO-passivization is allowed; in Mandarin Chinese-type languages, only DO-passivization is allowed; while in Kinyarwanda-type languages, both IO-passivization and DO-passivization are allowed. In the passive sentences of DOCs, the Case absorption by the passive morpheme on the little v causes the IO to be passivized in American English; the Case absorption by the passives morpheme on the applicative V causes the DO to be passivized in Mandarin Chinese; and the Case absorption by the passive morpheme optionally on the little v or the applicative V causes either the IO or the DO to be passivized in languages such as Kinyarwanda.
A’-extraction of DOCs also reveals three patterns cross-linguistically. In American English-type languages, only the DO is allowed to undergo A’-extraction; In Korean-type languages, only the IO is allowed to undergo A’-extraction; while in Polish-type languages, both the IO and DO are allowed to undergo A’-extraction. It is suggested that the cross-linguistic variation of A’-movement on the IO and DO is attributed to the Phasehood of the little v or the applicative verb. In American English-type languages, since the Phase EPP is handed over to the applicative head from the little v, only the DO is allowed to undergo A’-movement to Spec CP. In Korean-type languages, since the Phase EPP feature is retained on the little v, only the IO is allowed to undergo A’-movement to Spec CP. In Polish-type languages, since the Phase EPP feature is optionally handed over to the applicative head from the little v, either the IO or the DO can undergo A’-movement to Spec CP.
The assumption of the two structural Case assignments in DOCs also sheds light on the Raising Constructions from a cross-linguistic perspective. There seem to be two types of patterns; in English-type languages, only the embedded subject is allowed to move to the matrix Spec TP, while in Icelandic-type languages, only the experiencer is allowed to move to the matrix Spec TP. In Icelandic-type languages, the Case checking ability of the little v is suppressed (Burzio 1986), while the applicative verb retains its Case checking ability. Therefore, the Case feature on the experiencer is checked by the matrix T and the experiencer further moves to Spec TP. In English-type languages, the Case checking ability of the applicative head is percolated to the little v. Therefore, little v receives the Case checking ability from the applicative verb. Since the experiencer becomes inactive due to its Case features checked, the embedded subject is valued as nominative by the finite T and is further attracted to Spec TP
