Recently, in green communications, many studies have focused on reducing the carbon footprints from communication systems by integrating wireless communication systems, smart grids, and energy harvesting. We call such an integrated system smart-grid-powered wireless communication systems with energy harvesting. Moreover, owing to emerging Internet-of-things (IoT) technologies, an interest in energy harvesting for sustainable self-powered devices has also grown. With these backgrounds, energy harvesting techniques are widely applied from smart grids for powering wireless communication systems to end-devices in wireless communication systems such as wireless sensors and wearable devices.
In general, the amounts of energy harvested by energy harvesting techniques highly depend on given environments related to the energy harvesting sources. Due to such a dependency, most energy harvesting techniques have inherent uncertainties. The uncertainties make energy provisions from energy harvesting sources be unstable according to the given environments, while energy provisions from external on-grid energy sources are stable in general. Since scheduling a system determines or affect the energy consumption of the system in most cases, the uncertainties should be carefully considered when scheduling the system to efficiently utilize the harvested energy. In particular, scheduling in smart-grid-powered wireless communication systems with energy harvesting becomes more challenging due to following reasons: strengthened uncertainties, unknown or partially known statistical information, and increased system complexity related to scheduling in systems. However, there is a lack of researches on scheduling for the systems dealing with such challenges. Thus, we need scheduling algorithms in wireless communications, from smart grids powering wireless communication systems to end-devices, which can effectively and efficiently deal with such key challenges.
In this thesis, we consider smart-grid-powered wireless communication systems with energy harvesting. In the system, the smart grids in the systems can generate energy using their power generation units and can also harvest energy from the renewable energy farm using renewable energy sources such as solar and wind. From the smart grids, the network equipments basically can use the energy, i.e., on-grid energy sources, and they can also use the harvested energy from their distributed energy harvesting units using the renewable energy sources. For the end-devices in the systems, energy harvesting using RF energy sources,
i.e., RF signals, is applied. The end-devices can harvest energy not only by using the RF signals from their access points, but also by using the RF signals other end-devices.
In such systems, we address various scheduling problems. In particular, we address joint transmission resource and energy cooperation scheduling in the cellular networks with renewable energy sources, both task scheduling for IoT devices and resource scheduling for simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) in IoT systems with SWIPT and renewable energy sources, and transmission scheduling for both D2D devices and power beacon (PB) in PB-aided D2D communication systems. In addition, we also address power generation scheduling in the power systems with renewable energy sources, where load demands are time-varying as the energy consumption on network equipments. To address them, we first appropriately model the uncertainties on each system including the additional uncertainties from energy harvesting. Based on the model, we formulate scheduling problems which aim at maximizing the long-term performances satisfying the QoS requirements. Then, we develop scheduling algorithms to efficiently solve the problems even without any a priori information or with a partially known information. Through numerical results, the developed scheduling algorithms effectively address the uncertainties from energy harvesting and achieve a significant performance improvement compared with the scheduling algorithms which cannot address the uncertainties.
