The main purpose of this research is to analyze the process of participating in the sports club and thoughts of students and teachers that they have when they take parts in floorball sports club. And it will suggest the effective ways of leading school sports clubs.
To establish these goals, I researched a floorball school sports club which was held every saturday at S elementary school in Seoul from 2014. March 8th to July 19th. Students joined in school sports club with peer mentors every Saturday and 6 graders who are study participants recorded their own thoughts. First graders of middle schools sent their reports through e-mail to the researcher. The leading teacher recorded his thoughts on reflection paper after each class. I drew a conclusion from analyzing case records and inductive categories.
Organizing and operating of school sports club with peer mentors were done in the process of preparation - selecting mentors - organizing mentor groups - educating mentors - connecting and proceeding - evaluation. Graduates were provided opportunities to volunteer using sports volunteer system. Document formats of the mentor application, activity journals and certificates of volunteering were developed. The researcher contacted students who graduated S elementary school and are now students of B middle school individually and selected 4 students in total (one student per a position) as mentors. Mentees are the students who applied for Saturday - after school - activity in S elementary school. They were tested for deciding positions for peer mentoring. Mentor education was separated into the prior education and repairing education. Mentors were asked to do their bests with their roles. The researcher connected a mentor and a mentee in each position and proceeded as scheduled, and finished the research with evaluation at the end.
The research cut the thoughts of mentors, mentees and teachers of sports club into 'before - while - after'. Graduates turned up with types of 'interested', 'fearful', 'indifferent' about peer mentor activity. Mentees appeared to apply for the activity 'to experience a new and fun sport', 'to be healthy', 'to make my hobby', ' to participate in some matches', and 'to be interested in group matches and exchange with other students'. The teacher had difficulties with coaching many students and offered the place for sports to graduates.
As the research was proceeded, mentors turned up to types of 'neglecting', 'leading', 'colorless and odorless'. Mentees were separated to responses of 'that's it', 'that's not it', and 'it goes like this'. They wanted to follow the cool demonstration and superior skills, but they thought 'I will not do like that' with the other scenes. Also, they got to know each other when they had asked and answered each other about unexperienced things. The teacher harmonized the practices of mentors and mentees, and formal mentorings and informal mentorings.
Finally, the feelings that mentors had after the activities were separated to 'growth', 'intimacy' and 'helplessness'. They felt they were grown up more when they worked together with their juniors and built intimacy with them. However, they showed 'helplessness' with stagnant improvement. Mentees said they found challenge spirit and could enjoy matches. They also were inconvenienced with the finished schedules of matches and wanted to be mentors next year. The teacher considered the effective ways to manage mentors and settle down the peer mentoring system.
For activating school sports clubs, using the experts of local communities with sports volunteering systems is being suggested (Min-jung Kwon, 2012). However, there are more and more school sports clubs over the country with more various types of sports. There would be a lot of limitations to use experts of local communities. It must be more effective to use peer mentors for school sports clubs, because we can meet each student's desire and level. It is valuable for mentors as they get continuous opportunities to participate in sports activities and they can notice the values of volunteering. Mentees also grew more from forming healthy networks in the society with other students and copying their role models.
