ALLSSTAR(Archive of L1 and L2 Scripted and Spontaneous Transcripts and Recordings)코퍼스를 사용하였다.
The present study examines the effects of elicitation methods on Korean speakers’ English vowel productions. To collect relevant data, researchers can use various methods, such as asking the participants to read given materials, answer the questions on paper, or participate in an interview with researchers. These approaches are called elicitation methods of reading, spontaneous monologue, and spontaneous dialogue. The present study analyzes Korean speakers’ vowel production, especially that of front and back vowels, using all three methods mentioned above. Furthermore, the results are compared with the relevant performance of English native speakers in terms of vowel duration and formant.
The data from ALLSSTAR (Archive of L1 and L2 Scripted and Spontaneous Transcripts and Recordings) corpus were used in this study, from which recordings of 8 Korean L1 and 8 American L1 speakers were extracted for comparison.
The major finding of this study is that, depending on the specific elicitation method used, Korean speakers demonstrate both common phenomena and distinctive phenomena from Engllish native speakers. Overall, Korean speakers can distinguish tense and lax in a sense that most of the results are comply with American speakers’ characteristics.
As for the duration, Korean speakers use a longer duration than American speakers. The results suggest that, while Korean speakers use duration in distinguishing back vowels, American speakers show a longer duration gap in between front tense and lax vowels. When reading, American speakers show a bigger difference in front vowels than Korean. Furthermore, as concerns the back vowels, Korean and American speakers give a similar aspect of being more distinguishable in spontaneous speech. This means that Korean speakers have more dynamics in spontaneous speech. This effect can be explained with “probability” of speech.
For formant values, due to the specificity of the Korean vowel system, the overall vowel space of Korean speakers is narrower than that of American speakers. This also affected the results of the present study, including a higher positioning of lax vowels in Korean-spoken English. However, unlike what was suggested in previous research on American speakers, Korean speakers do not exhibit any remarkable differences depending on speech style.
Therefore, it can be concluded that, unlike English native speakers, Korean native speakers are not affected by speech style when speaking their second language, English. Even if duration and speech styles have a little relation, this is not enough to explain how fluent speakers are. The results of the present study are expected to provide a valuable insight on English as spoken by Koreans and to enhance the understanding of current elicitation methods and Korean use of English vowels.
