Korea, China, and Japan, which represent Asian cultures, developed their own fighting techniques for survival, expansion, and preservation since their primitive days. As the countries evolved to modern society, these fighting techniques combined with physical and artistic elements were transformed into various martial art concepts according to their cultural characteristics. As Korea, China, and Japan engaged themselves in active cultural exchanges since ancient times, their martial arts gradually became divided into two types. One type was solely focused on defeating the opponent with practical fighting techniques, while the other emphasized the aspect of self-training in which the values of self-defense and self-realization were expressed and realized at the same time.
The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the rules of Korean, Chinese, and Japanese martial arts (Taekwon-do, Wushu, and Karate) competitions, which are divided into fighting and artistic types, and explore differentiated strategic approaches for further development of Taekwondo competitions. For this study, a group of experts was selected and the study was conducted through the Delphi technique, and the following results were obtained.
The study first looked at Kyorugi, Sanda and Kumite, and analyzed the environment, rules and safety of the competitions. First, in terms of the environment of the games, in the case of Sanda, the problems in awarding points correctly by judges have been continuously raised. Kumite also have suffered from similar problems and many doubts have been raised against the fairness of judges' decisions, which are purely subjective. In the meantime, Taekwondo Kyorugi competitions have been considered fairly fair in terms of scoring by introducing the electronic gear system early on, differently from the other events. However, it was analyzed that the scoring coefficient system of the electronic gear system was a fundamental cause that deterred the use of various kicks and undermined the tactical operation of the game. Therefore, differentiation through changes in the rules of competition should be sought to stimulate the interest of spectators by allowing the contestants to use more diverse kicks and tactical movements in Taekwondo games. In addition, the texture of the Kyorugi uniform hinders the movement, and the athletes deliberately wearing larger uniforms than their size fail to represent the proper and orderly spirit of Taekwondo. Therefore, a new uniform optimized for movement during the game should be introduced for the practical reason as well as the correct spiritual representation of the sport.
Second, in terms of competition rules, Kyorugi, Sanda, and Kumite all award different points depending on the skill and scoring area, but each has different score ratings, different ways of determining victory or loss, and different ways of penalizing violations. In Sanda, the winner and loser are decided for each round, and the contestant who wins two rounds out of three is declared the final winner. If the two contestants are tied, the one who performed more attacks is given the win. In Karate, the one who gets more points wins the game. If it is a tie, the one who scored a point first wins. According to the results of the analysis on the differentiating factors for Kyorugi competition rules, the three-round point system and the differential scoring system should be maintained, and additional scoring criteria such as kicking power and connected kicks should be introduced to make the competitions more dynamic and exciting. For a tie, application of the dominant win according to the frequency of these additional points should be considered for the same effect. For penalties, objective and clear criteria should be introduced. Disqualifying a contestant for 10 violations was found to be an important factor in smooth and proper operation of the game.
Finally, the study looked at the safety aspect of the martial arts competitions. In Sanda, the use area of protective gears was increased for the safety of athletes. In addition, the protective gears have been improved through the introduction of new designs and materials. In Sanda, a contestant is disqualified for 3 moves that endanger the other's safety. In Kumite, the Seundome rule prohibits direct hitting to prevent injury to players. Violations are classified as C1 and C2, and a contestant is disqualified immediately upon receiving four warnings within a category. However, in Sanda and Kumite, some of the protective gears are not fixed and sometimes become loosened. In Sanda, there are many players who retire early due to muscle and joint injuries. In Kumite, the Seundome rule is considered effective in preventing injury but is considered to make the game less realistic as a martial arts. Based on these facts, the differentiating factors that are applicable to Kyorugi are as follows. First of all, greater attention should be paid to the safety of athletes by strengthening penalties for actions that may put other athlete at risk during the game. Secondly, material or design improvements are needed for non-fixed protective gears (for torso, arms, legs). It is also necessary to introduce additional gears to protect the muscle and joint areas where injuries occur frequently. The study then looked at the expressive, artistic type martial arts competitions such as Poomsae, Taolu, and Kata. First, in terms of competition environment, Taolu can produce different music and uniforms depending on the event, and Kata creates a solemn and serious atmosphere in which players wear white uniforms and focus on the expression and sound. For Taekwondo Poomsae competitions, an environment where spectators and referees can be immersed should be created through changes in the stage environment with changes in stage equipment and lighting, and differentiated Poomsae uniform, which is the largest part of the game equipment. The uniform should be designed to accurately represent players' movements.
Second, in terms of competition rules, the results of Poomsae competitions have been mostly decided by subjective evaluations of judges due to the lack of clear scoring standards. In Taolu, 9 judges are divided to award score for each evaluation item. Under this system, players can freely program their presentations with various moves and actions. In Kata, judges subjectively evaluate presentations for each scoring item and declare the winner by raising blue or red flag. These scoring systems have raised many doubts about the fairness of the results. Therefore, in order to differentiate Poomsae, the qualifications of the judges must be verified through continuous training and competency evaluations. In addition, scoring standards should be objectified so that the evaluation of presentations can be known immediately. Divide the role of referees and for fairness's sake, the judges' scoring contents should be subdivided into details and transparently disclosed.
Third, in terms of audience, Taolu became known to the world early on through mass media such as books and movies under the name of Kung Fu when New China was founded and Wushu was redefined. After World War II, Kata became known to the world through various demonstrations and competitions, but it still lacks the public awareness as a competition sport. In order for Poomsae to be recognized as a competition sport in the minds of people, its frequent exposure in mass media is necessary. TV broadcasts with expert comments would serve the purpose well. In addition, attractive stage settings and ways to film the event should be introduced.
In order to differentiate Taekwondo from other martial arts, fighting should be made more dynamic and exciting to draw the interest of spectators. For Poomsae, the focus should be on its discipline and artistry. To bring the event closer to public, it needs greater exposure in mass media. The event's stage settings and ways to film it should be developed for greater immersion. Its scoring system should also be improved for fairness so that the audience can easily understand the results. With all of these efforts, Taekwondo can take its place as a global sports.
