In an unknown, indoor environment, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are unable to use GPS signals for their localization or guidance. Instead, UAVs could use laser scanner or vision based sensors for their autonomous operations inside building. However, laser scanner is normally too heavy for small UAVs which can only bring limited weight and size payloads so that most of UAVs use vision sensor for their guidance. Currently, with the release of RGB-D cameras that provide both RGB and depth information with a small weight and size like Kinect sensor, we can develop a small UAV system that performs collision avoidance mechanism as well as localization and mapping with a unique sensor.
This thesis presents two applications of Kinect liked RGB-D camera with our implementation in firmware, platform and algorithm for sensing and avoiding obstacle, and a modification to improve an already existing open source SLAM algorithm. For the obstacle avoidance application, RGB and Depth images from Kinect sensor are grabbed using a Gumstix embedded board on the quadrotor. Those images are then subsampled to QVGA resolution (320x240 pixels) before being transmitted to ground control station (GCS) via WiFi using TCP/IP protocol. In the GCS, an image processing module will process those images for detecting obstacles. If obstacle is found in front of UAV with the distance to UAV below than a predefined threshold, GCS will command UAV to update its fly path using RF signals so that UAV can avoid that obstacle. For the SLAM algorithm, KTL tracker is used to find corresponding points in the consecutive RGB images in order to find corresponding pairs in consecutive depth images. Then an RANSAC algorithm will estimate pose of movement using those depth pairs. This estimation is used as an initial estimation for iterative closest point algorithm (ICP) that can refine current estimation to get more accuracy result. Finally, a 3D pose trajectory is created for the localization based on the refinement pose. Our study shows that an RGB-D camera like Kinect sensor can be integrated in UAVs for autonomous operation in unknown, GPS-denied environment.
