We have discussed the syllable structure of English from the viewpoint of Optimality Theory. They say that the syllable must be recognised as the basic unit of phonological analysis. This paper deals with the syllable-related problems in English.
First of all, chapter 2 deals with the definition of the syllable, which was classified into the internal evidence and external language. Also, we have examined the previous studies on the syllable. Flat syllable structure, such as Kahn(1976), Clements & Keyser(1983), and branching structure, that is, Selkirik(1982), Vergnaud & Halle(1978), were tested and compared respectively. In addition, Moraic theory was examined.
Chapter 3 deals with the basic principles and theoretical background of Optimality Theory, which focused on the surface structures and the constraint ranking, different from the previous theories. The constraints have the universal characteristic, but its ranking is different and language-specific. To show this fact, we have illustrated Yawelmani, Spanish, Berber, and English.
(1) Language-Specific Rankings
a. Yawelmani: *COMPLEX, PEAK, MAX-IO >> DEP-IO
b. Spanish: DEP-IO, *COMPLEX, PEAK >> MAX-IO
c. Berber: DEP-IO, *COMPLEX, MAX-IO >> PEAK
d. English: DEP-IO, PEAK, MAX-IO >> *COMPLEX
DEP-IO is positioned at the bottom in Yawelmani because it permits the vowel to be inserted between the vowels. Whereas, MAX-IO is at the last of the ranking in Spanish because of the consonant deletion among it cluster. In Berber, PEAK is domnated by all the other constraints because the consonants become into the peak of the syllable. In English, *COMPLEX is dominated by them as it allows to have consonant clusters.
OT explicitly explains syllable structures of languages by the constraints and their rankings. In the end, faithfulness constraints and syllable constraints are universal, but their rankings are different accoding to their languages.
In addition, OT classified syllable typology into CV, CVC, VC, and V syllables. We identified many types of ranking by ONSET, NoCODA and Faithfulness Constraints. First of all, ONSET and NoCODA do not reciprocate each other. In other words, if they are ranked with parallelism, any ranking is the same result. Logically, 6 rankings are possible, but we assumed four rankings.
(2) Possible Rankings of {FAITHFULNESS, ONSET, NoCODA}
a. FAITHFULNESS >> ONSET, NoCODA : (C)V(C)
b. ONSET, NoCODA >> FAITHFULNESS : CV
c. ONSET >> FAITHFULNESS >> NoCODA : CV(C)
d. NoCODA >> FAITHFULNESS >> ONSET : (C)V
With these rankings, possible syllable structures are generated irrespective of the input, which supports the 'Richness of the Base'(Smolensky 1993).
We have examined that syllable typology was classified into syllalbe onset and coda, whose results are the followings. In case of syllable onset, if faithfulness constraints, MAX-IO and DEP-IO, dominate ONSET, syllable onset is optional, otherwise, its onset is obligatory. If MAX-IO is the lowest in the hierarchy, syllable onset is obligatory because of vowel deletion. If DEP-IO is the lowest, consonant insertion makes onset obligatory.
In case of syllable coda, if NoCODA is dominated by MAX-IO and DEP-IO^nuc, syllable Coda is optional, otherwise, Coda is prohibited. If MAX-IO is the lowest, the consonant is deleted. If DEP-IO^nuc is the lowest, vowel is inserted.
In chapter 4, we argue that OT is superior to the former Generative Phonology(GP), which was proved by syllable structure, schwa deletion, and /r/ insertion and deletion in Boston area. GP focused on the underlying representation, rule and derivation, however, OT is the main point that all constraints are violable. For example, in syllable structure many rules are necessary to derive the correct output. Also, in GP underlying representations must be fixed and stipulated in the derivation, on the contrary, in OT any forms can be used as the input.
In Chapter 5, we delved into English words by OT, which supports the following ranking.
(3) Ranking of English
OCP, *CN, MOC, PEAK, SYLLABIC LICENSING, SONORITY, >> MAX-IO, DEP-IO >>
ONSET, *COMPLEX, NoCODA
Syllable-specific constraints, for example, OCP, *CN, and MOC, and syllable well-formdness constraints, that is, PEAK, SYLLABIC LICENSING, SONORITY are the topmost. However, they do not stipulate their rankings. Faithfulness Constraints, MAX-IO, DEP-IO, are in the middle. Syllable constraints, that is, ONSET, *COMPLEX, NoCODA, are the lowest. Using this ranking, we have explained word structure in English easily.
