This paper examines the types and characteristics of the language spoken by members of Korea Soka Gakkai International (SGI) in religious rituals and analyzes the religiosity that everyday language reinforces from an ethnographic viewpoint of communication. This is an "emic" study that collects and captures empirical data by considering the type and practice of religious language, usage and characteristics of everyday language, and relationship between everyday language and religiosity as the main research questions in order to capture the regularity of language and non-verbal behavior that is unconsciously agreed upon within a religious community.
First, the language used in the sequence and order of the whole ritual is classified, and the types and characteristics are described by focusing on the religious language that strongly reveals the identity of religion. Religious language is the basis for analyzing ritual language and recognizing the identity of a religion. In Korea SGI, two types of religious language, "Chant (nam-myoho-renge-kyo)" and "Gongyo (practice gongyo and regular gongyo)," are spoken, and the Chant is recited to the public three times at the beginning and end of the official ceremony, called a "neighborhood discussion meeting." The recitation of the Chant is important in both formal ceremonies and personal daily practices, and it is observed that the Gongyo is practiced in informal ceremonies and personal spaces. The religious language rules of these two religious practices share in common with traditional religious languages an emphasis on a rigid format, maintaining the same speed, intonation, and pronunciation of words.
In addition to these formal aspects, the experience of articulating religious language is investigated by means of interviews in order to explore the relationship between religious language and religiosity.
Second, I take note of the linguistic features of locution from the situational context in which Korea SGI members use everyday language as captured from their rites. In particular, I pay special attention to the fact that the location in which the everyday language is used is not a religious establishment but the living room of a family home, and thereby focus on the link between the spatial background and the situation in which the speech takes place. The main features of the everyday language uttered in rituals can be identified as “terms of address and the use of greetings at the beginning and end of the rituals.” The neighborhood discussion meeting, which is comprised of various generations from children to senior citizens, is characterized by the use of honorifics and terms of address among its participants. In addition, the frequent use of everyday language such as "hello," "thank you," and "that’s all" is observed at the beginning and end of the locution in the ceremony. This suggests implicit rules inherent in the ritual, even in everyday language confined to the situation where words are spoken. The “evangelical language” used in the follow-up to the ritual reflects the fact that everyday language is mainly used even in the extension of the ritual.
Third, important genres of speech, including "happiness conversation, testimonials from personal experiences, and words of advice from the senior members," are examined in order to analyze the relationship between everyday language and religiosity. The formal structure of each genre of speech, which is spoken in everyday language, shows that the language functions as a social action. “Happiness conversation” is a monthly status report in which members take turns sharing their own religious performance schedules or daily goals. From the perspective of speech act theory, the locutionary act is very frequent in the case of the speech used in the “happiness conversation.” This includes verbal, conclusive, or promissory performative verbs. “Testimonials from experience” are sharing experiences of members who have attained tangible benefits from their religious practice. Religious experiences are the practical results of everyday experiences rather than spiritual moments and are encouraged and applauded by other members. The “words of advice from the senior members” serves a function of supporting members and promoting religious activities. They are spoken by an official with authority in the religion, and this person conveys religious values in everyday language. The main aspect of everyday language behavior is examined in terms of its process of strengthening religiosity as a locutionary act from the perspective of speech act theory.
This study uses the example of Korea SGI to explore how everyday language used in religious ceremonies can be interpreted as social action in a functional sense. Beyond its significance of interpreting and documenting an insider view of the use of language in Korea SGI, it extends studies of religion toward the realms of sociology and linguistic anthropology.
