A Study on Korean Neolithic Society and its Cultural Aspects
This study aims to provide a comprehensive review of the studies on the Neolithic culture of Korea, thereby establishing an information database regarding the achievements of discovering the Neolithic archeological sites and reconstructing the socio-cultural aspects of the Neolithic Age in Korea. In this study, ‘society’ collectively refers to the overall social structure such as dependency on hunting, fishing, gathering and farming in the Neolithic era of Korea, residential mobility and settlement, inter-group communication and information network. The ‘cultural aspect’ is a collective term for the materialistic and non-materialistic aspects of individuals in their group or collective life in the Neolithic era.
In Chapter I, a comprehensive chronological method and a regional classification method were proposed through a comprehensive review of chronological studies of the Neolithic era and regional classifications starting from the Japanese colonial period. In the chronological study of the Neolithic culture, five phases of pre-, early-, middle-, late- and near-end periods were established based on the discoveries of mounds in case of the southern province in Korea. Now, 6 phases are proposed, including Gosan-ri remains in Jeju Island as the super-early period. It becomes a standard for establishing parallel relations among regions in the Korean peninsula. On the other hand, the Midwest region had a three phase system, which divides into early, middle and late periods based on the type change in Chulmun pottery. A five phase chronological system corresponding to that of the southern region, is now proposed.
Area classification in Neolithic societies has been mainly based on pottery. The extensive regional classification of the Korean peninsula has been performed according to the cardinal points, which still serves as a basic framework. The current extensive regional classification is relatively simplified, such as the southern, Midwest, northeastern and northwestern regions. The Central-Eastern Korea (Youngdong region) is also added here. Since the 1990s, new sub-regional classifications have also been made in the southern and Central-Western Korea, recognizing the inland and coastal regional differences. Taken together, we defined the comprehensive chronological classification of the Neolithic era in Korea into 6 phases, including super-early, pre-, early-, middle-, late- and near-end, while we categorized the extensive regional classification into 5 major regions including southern, Central-Eastern, northeastern, Central-Western and northwestern regions.
Chapter II examines the characteristics of major relics in the Neolithic era, and presents some new interpretations and hypotheses for a part of ruins, remains and relics. First, the nature of residence as a living facility, pit remnants as a storage facility, stone collection remnants used for various purposes such as food processing, tombs as a burial facility, as well as pottery kilns, stone workshops, shellmounds, tillage remnants as production facility were examined. And, the history and characteristics of Gosan-ri remains in Jeju Island, the formation process of the southern coastal shellmounds, the background of the fishing culture of the eastern coast and the southern coast were revisited, in which the social structure and the nature and basis of the formed group in the eastern coastal remains at that time were inferred. In addition, the importance of ‘depth’ was emphasized in the study of pit remnants. Earthenware previously recognized as a coffin is now revisited as a food storage container in a residential area. In addition, groove remnants reported as a pottery furnace is proposed to be a smoking facility for the storage of seasonal food or to be a steaming facility in order to obtain fiber from plant in their garment culture.
Additionally, regarding stone-made fish hook of union mode, the J-shaped fish hook culture, called the Osanri type was proposed to have a relationship with the stage I culture of Bel’kachi in the Far East Siberia. The I-shaped fish hook culture, mainly excavated from the southern coast was regarded to have a strong relationship with Kitoi culture formed along with the Angara River around Lake Baikal. An assumption that conical stoneware serves as a fishing tool for catching snapper fish living in the lagoon of the eastern coast was proposed. The material and structure of sword-shaped stoneware were analyzed and estimated to be a drum used in a primitive type loom. In addition, a possibility that small arrows of the remnants of Gosan-ri in Jeju Island and obsidian arrowheads and spear-heads excavated from the southern and eastern coasts were used with poison, was suggested. Based on the above results, the early stage remains of the East Sea were identified as the result of migration of groups with the northern cultures specialized in hunting and fishing.
In Chapter III, a database spanning 400 archaeological sites identified in the Korean peninsula was established. The main cultural aspects of the six periods from the beginning to the end of the period, the distribution of the ruins by region, and the relationship between the regions were examined. The earliest cultural aspects limited to Jeju Island are represented by the Gosan-ri pottery style and small arrowheads. The pre-period can be divided into the flat-base pottery culture in the central-eastern region and the Raised-Design Ware culture in the southern region. The early period is a period of typical Chulmun pottery culture, represented by Yeongseon-dong pottery style in the southern region and Chulmun pottery in the Central-Western Korea region. In the middle period, the number of relics was rapidly increasing. In terms of pottery culture, it was the time when the very first identity of the Neolithic culture in the Korean peninsula is formed. In the late period, the number of relics reached its peak and the range of lithography on pottery was reduced and the pattern of pottery was simplified. In the near-end period, the number of relics was rapidly decreasing. The degeneration and annihilation of the pottery patterns was going on.
The distribution of the relics according to each region was made by using the relic information database. And a distribution map of the ruins per period was prepared and reviewed. In the pre- and early- periods, almost all of the relics were found to be shellmound relics from shorelines and islands, which indicates that they are highly dependent on marine resources. However, in the middle period, the dependence on shellmounds was greatly reduced. This phenomenon continued until the late period, which implies that some socio-economic changes in the middle period persisted. It was understood that the near-end period was a time to welcome the transition to the new era by using the location of the late period relics as it was.
The interrelationship between the regions was revisited with the validity of the regional classification by analyzing the distribution of the type of earthenware representing each period. Additionally, through the analysis of distribution of pit remnants, stone collection remnants, grates and bricks, fishnet sinkers, and spindle whorls, the relationship between the regions and the changes in the working environments were inferred. The excavation frequency and concentration analysis of the major relics of each period also made inferences about interchanges between the regions.
In Chapter IV, we deduced the structure and existence of Korean Neolithic Society and inferred the group relation through analysis of information network. The dynamic spatio-temporal transformation process of the Neolithic socio-cultural landscape developed on the Korean Peninsula was further clarified. The Korean Neolithic society had already showed the essential factors of a complex hunter-gather society that was already more complex than the general hunting society in its pre- and early- periods. After the middle period, it was understood that the cultivation of crops such as millet and foxtail millet by the field agriculture were extended, which implied that they were gradually transformed into a farming society with high settlement. This can be deduced from the fact that the number of total relics had significantly increased, the number of total shellmounds had decreased, the residential location had shifted inland hills or riverside area, and the number of tools related to agriculture had increased. The information network and the flow of information between regions were grasped by the topographic analysis and the occurrence and development process of the Geumgang pottery style. The information network of the Nakdong-gang River and Geum-gang River basin is understood to be developed in a broader area. And the relation between groups can be deduced from the investigational contents of Yongdam-Dam submerged area where the ruins after the middle period are distributed along the water system. Despite the multiple overlapping regions of securing commercial resources according to the site catchment analysis, many groups of relics could coexist, because the clan community, which shares the awareness of the cognitive relationship based on the clan society, formed a united society. And we verified that their livelihood was based on slash-and-burn agriculture, while hunting and gathering were complementary means of their livelihood, and were often carried out by several groups through collaborative work. In short, the Neolithic Society of Korea had coexisted in various forms with the mobile hunter-gatherer society and complex hunter-gatherer society before the early period. From the middle period onward, the transition to a farming society occurred. It was inferred that they formed a ‘complex society’ at a relatively low level close to that of the ‘segmentary society’ or the ‘segmentary lineage system’.
