The purpose of this study is to investigate the narrative characteristics of digital interactive videos through the exploration of material properties of digital interactive media and the critical review of traditional narrative theories based on self-contained narratives such as novels and movies. Feature films and digital interactive videos have long been recognized as totally different media from each other. In short, while feature films have been accepted as narrative texts that convey stories, digital interactive videos, especially videogames as the primary genre until the 1990s, have been regarded as a kind of computer programs in which users grasp rules and perform missions in simulated environments. However, a group of narratologists, such as Janet Murray and Brenda Laurel, have begun to study the narrativity of digital interactive media including videogames and their heated debate with some ludologists who claimed games cannot be completely understood through theories derived from narrative has activated the related studies. Although game studies have achieved fruitful output until now, they have shown the following limitations: most ludologists have failed to fully understand the definitions of traditional narrative theories and related domains, whereas, many narratologists have oversimplified the intrinsic properties of the medium that shape the form of narrative and affect the narrative experience. Thus, this study intends to explore the characteristics of digital interactive video narratives by pojecting traditional narrative theories onto the intrinsic properties of digital media. Janet Murray and Ian Bogost point out that the environment of digital media is “procedural(made of executable procedures)” or “procedural rhetoric.” Unlike classical media, digital media persuade players through "rule-based representations" and "interactions", and "the entire narrative world is created" by player participation. Espen J. Aarseth coined the term "ergodic" for the phenomenon in which a cybertext requires a reader to do physical work for traversing the text. These assertions indicate the importance of the properties of the player of digital interactive videos. The player of the interactive videos is divided into the actual player outside the system and the player agent functioning as part of the system. It also means that, unlike in traditional media, distinction between an actual reader (player) and an implied reader (player) is impossible in digital interactive videos. It is one of the greatest achievement of this study to have described what ‘narrator-“I”’ and narrating agent are based on the intrinsic properties of the medium. For a long time in narrative studies, a narrator has been regarded as a person, and accordingly confusion occur if the narrator is one of the characters or exists outside the story. This study has drawn the below conclusions by applying Mieke Bal's argument that a narrating agent should be seen as an instance of narration. First, in order to resolve the dilemma of securing both the unrestricted agency (within the physical and interface constraints offered by the game) and narrative coherence at the same time, the system and the player, the two participating entities of most interactive videos, have procedures to agree on the rules. Second, the agreement on rules in digital interactive videos is mainly made in extra-diegetic levels. Third, from the dilemma abovementioned, the question of “the forms and processes in which narratives reflect the players’ wills” inevitably rises and thereby leads to the notion of agency and agents. Also, in the digital interactive videos, agency and agents have the characteristics of being "social" in that interactions rise among the system, each element of the system, and player agents. Fourth, narrating agency and agent can be classified into “local” and “global”. “Local agency means that the player is able to see clear, immediate reactions to her interaction. Global agency means that the sequence of events experienced by the player is strongly determined by player interaction.”(Mateas, M:2002) Fifth, the narration delegation from the global narrating agency to local narrating agency takes effect with the rule consensus through the extra-diegetic screen. Also, narration delegation in the digital interactive videos occurs in accordance with spatial structure in contrast with narration delegation in the novels which occurs in accordance with temporal sequence. In addition, as for narrative structure, this study proposes to add another level to the three-level model proposed by Gerard Genette, who classified narrative components into story, discourse, and narrating, by separating “the text level” from discourse level in order to reflect the material characteristics of the medium. In the same context, “player’s time” has been added to the narrative temporality to reflect the material characteristics of the medium to record the player’s time, so that the temporality of interactive videos is categorized into story time, discourse time, and player’s time. As for the spaciality of interactive digital videos, it is composed of story, discourse and “interface,” which is the description space for the player. As for focalization, it has been pointed out that the earlier studies reveal confusion between the actual player and the player agent and that, in the digital interactive videos, the focalization gives information as hybrid forms including information perceived by the character as the internal focalizer as well as the virtual camera, sound, visual images and various modals as the external focalizer. Finally, this study analyzed four digital interactive videos including three digital games, <StarCraft> (1998), <OverWatch> (2016), <Life is Strange 1> (2015) and one interactive drama, <Façade> (2005). As a result, the narration delegation/retrieval modes have been found to vary according to the genre and the works of the interactive videos. Also, it has been discovered that the narration and plots are concerned not only with narrative strategies but also with more various issues including visualization and user experiences.
