Growth of Surveillance Cameras is exploding, achieving nearly a 100% growth rate in 2005. Especially, continued growth will push the worldwide its market by the end of 2009. Overall demand for video surveillance is booming as well, driven by increased public and private security concerns. As surveillance cameras have moved to digital and portable applications, manufacturers are making smarter cameras with image recognition, image tracking, lower cost, centralized storage and backup and response and alert system.
The conventional surveillance system requires too many components and is too complicated for portable applications. In this thesis, we propose simple surveillance camera architecture with a motion detector that can detect changes of an object within its surroundings for low-power and low-cost applications. The proposed motion-detection algorithm uses one-bit images which are selected using a binary search algorithm that is decided by varying the reference voltage. To improve a performance and a accuracy of the algorithms that process these images, we propose a spatial and temporal reference voltage control algorithm while considering its effect on the size and complexity of the hardware. The proposed algorithm performs better than one-bit motion algorithm.
We also address some of the issues and benefits of reusable and unified verification methodology on a centralized data structure, verification platform and environment. This includes flexibility in meeting the final requirements using tools and independent technology wherever possible in various processes and projects. This methodology covers a whole design flow from RTL design to timing closing step. The other aim is to reduce effort by avoiding the same work done twice by different people and to reuse the environment and platform on the different projects. We verify all the functions of the motion detector through the use of a user interface program on an FPGA board and ASIC chip. Experimental results are also presented.
