Sublime has become an important aesthetic category today, as can be said that the motive power of modern art comes from the sublime category. The reason why art of today is not beauty but sublime matters is that sublime is a place of human limitation and suffering and a place to find others. Modern philosophers who led the renaissance of the sublime mainly recall Kant's sublime theory. But when we look only at Kant's sublime theory, it is difficult to understand why it is described as such the pleasure of an contradiction as ‘negative pleasure’, ‘unpleasant pleasure’, ‘delight from pain’. Because his sublime theory is not his own unique work. He organized and deepened in his system a theory that were noticed and conceptualized by many people for nearly a century.
This paper aims to outline the process of the formation of the sublime concept in modern times, focusing on the ‘discovery of unpleasant pleasure and the problem of justification’. In addition, I will examine the process of discovering and conceptualizing the new aesthetic feeling of sublime through text analysis of important authors, and help to understand the formation process of this concept as a whole.
I deal with Longinus to see the archetype of sublime theory in Chapter 1. In Chapter 2, I deal with Boileau, who revived the sublime in modern times. The classicist Boileau is interested in Longinus to establish his authority on his argument in the epic debate, the prehistory of ‘the Old and New Controversy’. Boileau has sparked interest in Longinus's sublime theory by translating Longinus's "On Sublime" in French and using it in ‘the Old and New Controversy’. He frees Longinus's sublime from rhetoric and makes it aesthetical rather than rhetorical concept.
In Chapter 3, I deal with Dennis, the first critic to theorize sublime as an important aesthetic concept in England. Dennis gives us a glimpse of the transition from Boileau to Burke. Dennis opens a new way to the concept of sublime by actively approving the path rejected by the classicalist Boileau, the way of introducing Christian themes to the poem. According to him, the great ideas that Longinus referred to are religious ideas, and the passions that these ideas provoke are ‘enthusiastic passions with fear.’ With Dennis, the feelings of sublime change from wonder to fear, and the element of discomfort is placed in the sublime.
In Chapter 4, I deal with Burke's theory of sublime. Burke develops Dennis’s point of view. He completely separates pain from pleasure and creates the concept of ‘Delight’. In doing so, he reveals that sublime is not a pure pleasure, but a unique pleasure mixed with pain. Burke also tries to explain why the source of sublime is horror by paying attention to the power or power of God. He adds a condition of power, in addition to size, to the condition of a sublime object. Along with Burke, the feeling of sublime become a feeling of negative pleasure related to pain, and sublime has two categories, ‘size’ and ‘power.’
In Chapter 5, I discuss the process by which Mendelssohn's theory of sublime undergoes change. In his 1758 paper on sublime, Mendelssohn did not distinguish sublime from beauty, and described sublime as ‘a wonder based on pure feelings of pleasure.’ Later, though, he tries to explain the possibility of ‘pleasant pleasure’ in his aesthetic system through his consideration of Burke. He accepts some of Burke’s elements of sublime, transforms some within his aesthetic system, and in 1771 revises his theory of sublime and republishes it. This process allows us to see how British aesthetic theories are incorporated into the German tradition.
In Chapter 6, I deal with Kant's theory of sublime. In Criticism of Judgment, Kant begins with Burke's idea of the negativity of sublime, which is that the sublime is an negative pleasure associated with pain. But explaining the essence of negativity, Kant shifts the sublime to a new horizon. According to him, the essence of the ‘unpleasant pleasure’ we have in the experience of sublime lies in the awareness of ourselves as emotional beings and, at the same time, as intellectual beings. In despair and denial of reality, we are conscious of hope and affirmation of what has not yet arrived in me.
