Biofeedback control has attracted the attention of many researchers in the past decade owing to its potential applications in the field of theoretical biology and medical science. Such feedback control schemes can be applied for the study of the behavior and functioning of the brain and for the treatment of various brain disorders. Dynamic behavior of neuron is widely studied to explore the chief role of neuronal spiking for effective neurotransmission and brain signal processing. External electrical stimulation, like deep brain stimulation, is a therapy for cognitive disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy and dystonia. Synchronization of chaotic neurons under external stimulation plays a major role in the transmission of neural signals and enables efficient communication between the brain and muscles. FitzHugh-Nagumo (FHN) neural model, under sinusoidal electrical stimulation, is widely utilized for the synchronization study due to its potential ability of representing dynamical aspects of neurons. A nonlinear robust adaptive control is investigated that utilizes linear matrix inequalities for asymptotic synchronization of two coupled chaotic FHN neurons under unknown parameters and uncertain stimulation current amplitudes and phase shifts. Further, the synchronization of three coupled chaotic FHN neurons with different gap junctions and disturbances under external electrical stimulation is discussed. The dynamics of uncertain coupled chaotic delayed FHN neurons under EES for incorporated parametric variations is studied and a global nonlinear control law is developed for synchronization of delayed neurons with known parameters. Nonlinear control strategies for the stabilization and tracking of dynamical nonlinear systems are developed which can be applied, in future, to control the tremor associated with Parkinson’s disease. The proposed control strategies are applied to chaotic systems in order to cope with the chaotic behavior of the brain. The main objective of the present study was to provide, for multi-input multi-output (MIMO) nonlinear systems, a tracking control approach based on nonlinear state feedback, which guarantees the global asymptotic output and state tracking with zero tracking error in the steady state. A comprehensive linear matrix inequality (LMI)-based tracking control for a class of nonlinear time-delay systems with Lipschitz nonlinearities is also investigated. To support real-world applications, a more general disturbance model is used, to develop an LMI-based tracking control, to cope with the L2 norm bounded and the Euclidean norm bounded disturbances simultaneously. A comprehensive study of a dynamic nonlinear anti-windup compensator (AWC) design for nonlinear systems is investigated. It is shown that for asymptotically stable nonlinear systems, a full-order internal model control-based AWC always exists. Furthermore, a decoupled architecture-based AWC with better performance is proposed, wherein the selection of a nonlinear dynamical part of the AWC plays a key role in establishing an equivalent decoupled architecture. The proposed AWC architectures overcome the chief difficulty, in designing a nonlinear fullorder AWC for nonlinear systems, due to violation of the superposition principle. Using the decoupled architecture, a quadratic Lyapunov function, the Lipschitz condition, the sector condition, and L2 gain reduction, a linear matrix inequality-based AWC scheme is developed for Lipschitzian nonlinear systems that ensures global stability and the performance of the overall closed-loop system. It is observed that nonlinear AWC performance can be improved by imposing an additional exponential stability constraint, similar to the use of pole constraints for linear AWC schemes. By using local sector conditions, two decoupled architecture-based local AWC schemes for unstable nonlinear and chaotic systems are derived. One of the proposed local schemes simultaneously guarantees the region of stability and the closed-loop performance for tracking control applications. Simulation results are provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed control chemes.
