CubeSat Astronomy by NASA and Yonsei using Virtual Telescope Alignment Coronagraph (CANYVAL-C) Small-scale magNetosphere and Ionosphere Plasma Experiment (SNIPE)
This study introduces orbit control methods for formation flying in practical missions.
Flying smaller satellites according to an effective formation is better than flying a single
larger complex satellite. This study deals with the formation flying of several satellites for
scientific missions that are impossible to execute with a single satellite. Two CubeSats that
are executing the CubeSat Astronomy by NASA and Yonsei using Virtual Telescope
Alignment Coronagraph (CANYVAL-C) mission must travel close to each other to operate
a coronagraph. Therefore, orbit control events can promote drift recovery to reduce the
relative distance for station keeping, thus maintaining their relative positions. Four nanosats
fly in a specific formation to execute the Small-scale magNetosphere and Ionosphere
Plasma Experiment (SNIPE) mission to study the near-earth space environment. This
mission uses two types of formations based on data on temporal and spatial differences, the
sizes of which can be changed. For the SNIPE mission, drift recovery and station keeping
have been introduced for temporal data, and the initial configuration and reconfiguration
are used for spatial data.
Orbit control methods are established based on orbital elements to change formation with
a relative distance over several thousand kilometers considering several months. To
execute formations by modulating orbital elements, relative distances among satellites were
changed using the general perturbation theory. Lagrange planetary equations and Gauss’
variational equations describe the time derivative of the orbital elements by conservative
and non-conservative perturbations, respectively. Lagrange planetary equations determine
the required changes in orbital elements using J2 perturbation, and Gauss variational
equations use thrust.
Constraints related to orbit control have been analyzed, and thus, solutions have been
developed. Orbit control parameters have been derived based on the past orbit
determination data owing to the absence of the intersatellite link. Their derivation assumes
that orbit control is executed at the orbit determination epoch. Orbit control procedures that
are used for the same purpose are repeated owing to the limitations in how long the thrust
module can be fired because of power safety and risk posed by errors that accumulate while
generating thrust. The orbit control direction is fixed owing to the disturbance torque that
the misaligned thrust module generates. Thus, orbit control epoch, firing duration, and orbit
control direction can help control satellite formation flying. The data are derived at a
ground station and transmitted to the satellites, which, then, generate the required thrust.
The proposed orbit control system is tested using simulations. The CANYVAL-C CubeSats
and SNIPE nanosats can operate in their respective formations within their respective Δ𝑉
budgets. The proposed method is implemented with software tools that integrate with the
ground station for real-world applications.
