Internet communication language is the language used by Internet users in the Internet domain. It can be categorized as a sociolect since the aspects and uses of language vary according to certain generations, social classes, gender, purposes of use, and attitudes. This study began by recognizing a variant of language according to the division of certain community spaces or community communication language was being discovered. The subjects include the communication language used by "Ilbe" and "Womad" that displayed this phenomenon of linguistic variation most clearly.
The purposes of the study are to examine the changing processes and characteristics of communication language used by the users of Ilbe and Womad in their respective community spaces and analyze the background of this variation phenomenon according to social factors. The study also presented social motivations as the variation factors of this community communication language and discussed the ripple effects of this variant language on the society.
Chapter 2 examined the formation and differentiation processes of the community spaces and the ways that the old Internet communication language changed to figure out the background behind the gender community communication languages, the subjects of the study. Trying to understand how these two gender community communication languages were formed, it also looked into the characteristics of the two gender community spaces and explained their formation principles in the linguistic aspect by categorizing texts collected from their bulletin boards according to marks, forms, and meanings. The two gender community communication languages were even more complicated and irregular in the destructiveness of marks, techniques to disrupt grammar, and principles to distort meanings than the general communication language, which raises a need to include social factors in analysis to explain the factors of such linguistic variation.
Chapter 3 took a sociolinguistic approach, which maintains that the internal variations and changes of language derive from social factors, to explain differences in the system and regularity between the two gender community communication languages and the old communication language. Four social factors were presented to influence the variation phenomenon of gender community communication language, and they include gender, ideology, region, and generation. It was found that the two gender community communication languages created their independent variant languages based on the hatred sentiment according to each of the social factors.
Chapter 4 presented three social motivations as variant factors of gender community communication language to create such social conflict relations. The first one was the low-grade play culture derived from the backgrounds behind the two gender communities. The next one was the otherizing strategy, which involved expressing opinions and alienating weaker groups than them to enable the growing community size and establish a collective identity, to be reflected in language. The last one was the mirroring strategy, which involved reverse strikes by female-dominated communities to react to the language of hate against women reinforced by male-dominated communities. The study also examined linguistic conflicts and social ripple effects of the two gender community communication languages reflecting these motivations according to social factors as they were in contact with the Internet communication space and real society.
The certain linguistic code choices used by the two communities were part of the strategy for the community users to fulfill their common goals and intentional act to reveal the identity of their community spaces. Although the personal information and tendencies of users in these two gender communities were not disclosed directly due to anonymity, one of the characteristics of Internet communication space, their choice of variant language based on the hate sentiment gave clues about their collective identity and tendency. When the phenomena of social conflicts were explained from the sociolinguistic perspective, it was found that the use of variant language had solid correlations with social factors.
