In this study, Recently, in the planning and construction of urban railways, efforts are being made to respond to various changes socially, economically, and technologically, such as the high level of demand from users and the introduction of advanced technologies including Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in addition to automation technologies. Particular interest has increased regarding research on space-scale efficiency and the structural arrangement of stations in order to improve user convenience.
Urban railway stations are designed to facilitate their operation and maintenance and to provide convenience for passengers. A station typically consists of a waiting area in the upper level floor, a platform area in which trains operate and are boarded in the lower level floor, and a connecting area between each floor.
Despite the different functions of each floor, underground stations have gradually expanded and become more deeply installed in a top-bottom symmetrical structure, meaning that the layout of each floor is the same. Such a standardized interior structure does not take into account a future-oriented efficiency in space, scale, and arrangement. This standardized structure is generally designed with large pillars in each floor and these can often impair openness and visibility of space, in addition to causing obstacles to mobility. Aside from large pillars, partitions in facilities can reduce the usable space for passengers, station office areas, and leasing areas.
These challenges that reduce space efficiency and usability due to the top-bottom symmetrical structure exist because the Seoul Metro was built over three generations; the first subway generation (Line 1) to the third subway generation (Line 9). In order to use the internal space of railway stations more efficiently in a cost effective way, it is necessary to analyze the development in space, size, and layout of the railway stations throughout each of the three subway generations.
Therefore, this study investigated and analyzed the functions and efficiency of spaces for passengers, station office areas, and leasing areas of 301 different Seoul Metro stations built in each subway generation. Based on the analysis, this study proposes an asymmetrical and atypical space structure design model and features simulations conducted based on the LoS theory to examine structural safety and space efficiency as a result of spatial transformation. With this analysis, this study found the following:
From a comparison of the ticketing areas from each subway generation; the 4-Gate System of the first generation, the 2-Gate System of the second generation, and the 1-Gate System of the third generation, it was found that the footprint of ticketing areas has decreased dramatically as a result of development of the passenger/office area structure from that of a hallway to that of a main hall.
The structure of the station office area was analyzed and its functions have become more integrated in the third generation since the first generation, which featured more offices spread out across the station.
The use of areas for leasing has also simplified in the third generation as a result of having more multifunctional businesses such as convenience stores, whereas the leasing areas were primarily used for smaller businesses in the first generation and then developed for medium and large-scale businesses in the second generation. Modern developments have rendered such businesses obsolete. With that, this study proposes that it is necessary to adjust the scale and layout of station facilities in a more efficient way in accordance with the evolution of technology and trends in the utilization of space.
Based on the analysis of existing stations built in different subway generations, this study conducted simulations by designing a pillar-free main hall-type waiting room area, adjusting the platform floor and the connecting staircase, and integrating the station office and rental space. In these simulations, the study verified the LoS theory and the feasibility of an asymmetrical and atypical space structure design model. Additionally, the study learned that the asymmetrical and atypical space structure model appears to be more efficient in adjusting space structure and increasing usability than the top-bottom symmetrical structure model.
In conclusion, as a result of these simulations, this study finds that an asymmetrical and atypical space structure model will make it more feasible for the waiting room floor to be designed more harmoniously with the surrounding environment without changing railway routes and when installing underground stations for metropolitan and urban railways. When deciding on the scale of the station and the layout of its interior space, it is expected that this model will also contribute to enhancing the convenience of walking areas for passengers, space visibility and openness, and the flexibility and efficiency of arranging space for office use and leasing. Lastly, this model will also be useful for securing additional space in the event of an increase in future passengers and avoiding the encroachment in walking and waiting spaces due to pillar obstacles.
