As the size of the chemical industry and the industrial complex grows, the proximity to the community is also increasing. If toxic gas leaks occur at these plants, this can lead to significant casualties, especially if immediate countermeasures are not taken, including evacuation warnings. In addition to the prevention of these accidents, the establishment of a leak monitoring system is essential to detect the occurrence of an event early and to minimize the damage to the leakage accident through an optimal response. Fenceline air monitoring which is recently is executed in California is a representative case. However, an optimal sensor placement method, which considers the number of sensors used and where these sensors are placed, is required for practical and efficient management of the monitoring system. And advanced tracking technology, which interprets real-time sensor data and identifies the source of leakage, not just detection, is only in the research phase.
In this work, we proposed a system for optimizing sensor placement and tracking leakage sources for early response to leakage accidents and minimizing risks to areas near the plant due to toxic gas leakage accidents in the plant based on the generation and utilization of large amounts of leakage accident data. In addition to a theoretical consideration of the risks added to the neighboring area following the occurrence and spread of leaks within the plant, critical variables were selected and combined to define a risk formula for leakage. We propose an optimization formula based on risk-minimizing modeling for possible leakage scenarios and propose criteria to evaluate residual risks.
We also designed an artificial neural network model to predict the source of leakage from real-time measurements by learning the measured (virtual) concentration data from sensors placed in the optimal location. And we propose an optimized network through structural experiments of the prediction model. In addition, to evaluate robustness, one of the key requirements for the actual application of the leak source tracking system, we present a quantitative change of prediction performance for the various conditions that may actually occur. Furthermore, based on the results of quantitative robustness evaluation of leak source tracking systems, we present complementary points for improving the robustness of sensor placement optimization.
To validate the proposed method in this work, we apply and validate the proposed method to arbitrary virtual plant and plant with complex structures located in Yeosu Industrial Complex. In the case of sensor placement optimization, sensor placement, which reflects the risk in the area near the plant, reduced more risk compared to other sensor placements. For leak source tracking systems, the effect of sensor characteristics on the prediction accuracy of the leak source tracking system was quantitatively verified. Furthermore, in terms of robustness of the system, it was found that the leak source tracking system was robust to missing data but vulnerable to sensor bias. This provides quantitative results based on the considerations that should be considered when applying the actual plant of the leak source tracking system. Therefore, it is judged that the system proposed in this study has been applicable to real industrial sites.
In addition to the emergence of the Fourth Industrial Revolution era, the application of proposed sensor placement optimization and leak source tracking systems in this study has been confirmed that these can contribute to improving total safety in industrial complexes adjacent to the community through proactive anomaly detection and optimal response. In addition, the fenceline monitoring, source tracking, and diagnostic systems, and integrated design systems proposed in this study are expected to contribute significantly to improving the safety and sustainability of the chemical industry and our society by extending beyond responding to leakage incidents to other process safety and public safety problems.
