Accurate stress intensity factor analyses and crack growth rate of surface-cracked components in cylindrical structures are needed for reliable prediction of their fatigue life and fracture strengths.
In the first part of this thesis, an automated stress intensity factor analysis system of three-dimensional(3D) cracks in inhomogeneous materials is described. 3D finite element method(FEM) was used to obtain the stress intensity factor for subsurface cracks and surface cracks existing in inhomogeneous materials. To examine accuracy and efficiency of the present system, the stress intensity factor for a semi-elliptical surface crack in a plate subjected to uniform tension is calculated, and compared with Raju-Newman's solutions.
Then the system is applied to analyze cladding effect of subsurface cracks in inhomogeneous materials. The results were compared with those surface cracks in homogeneous materials. It is clearly demonstrated from these analyses that the stress intensity factors for subsurface cracks are less than those of surface cracks. Also, this system is applied to analyze cladding effect of surface cracks in inhomogeneous materials.
In the second part of this thesis, the integrity evaluation system of cylindrical structures is developed using probabilistic fracture mechanics. In pressure tube analysis, many input data required for the integrity assessment can have a large distribution. In the conventional deterministic fracture mechanics(DFM) methodology, conservative values are assumed for various parameters, which may lead to the result with a large safety margin. The probabilistic fracture mechanics(PFM) can reduce such conservatisms, and has become a more important tool. Also, the probabilistic analyses are considered to be very suitable for a rational evaluation of lifetime, which involves a number of uncertainties such as sizes and distribution of flaws, initial hydrogen concentration and fracture toughness and so on.
In all the analyses, failure probabilities are calculated using the Monte Carlo simulation with a large number of trial DFM analyses. The major results of the second part can be summarized as follows:
(1) Derivation of probability density function(PDF) of input parameter
Most probabilistic integrity assessments have been focused on pressure vessels and piping of nuclear power plants, which have different failure mechanisms from pressure tubes. Research for probabilistic estimates of pressure tube integrity is limited, and distribution of input parameters is not known. In order to obtain the distribution of input data, analysis on in-service inspection data, design data and installation data are carried out. As a result, PDFs of important parameters, such as fracture toughness, initial hydrogen concentration, flaw depth, flaw length and flow stress, are derived.
(2) Development of probabilistic integrity evaluation system
Among many techniques for failure probability estimation, Monte Carlo simulation method has been applied successfully for consideration of flaw growth by delayed hydride cracking. To get the reasonable result, Monte Carlo simulation with a large number of trial deterministic fracture mechanics analyses(approximately 10^(4) to 10^(6) trials) is required. Therefore probabilistic integrity evaluation system, which calculates failure probability, was developed. To examine accuracy and efficiency of the present system, the system is applied to several problems. These calculations show that the present system is stable and that the results agree well with the reference solution, which is obtained by other method or commercial code. Also, the developed system was successfully applied to sensitivity analysis of major input parameters.
It is found that the failure mode is either leakage or plastic collapse in probabilistic analysis, whereas unstable fracture was governing failure mode in deterministic analysis.
(3) Sensitivity analysis of major input parameters
Sensitivity analysis is done to determine the most important parameters for the pressure tube integrity. Parameters reviewed in the present work include an initial hydrogen concentration, number of cooldown, fracture toughness and flow stress. The dominant parameter of failure probability is found to be the initial hydrogen concentration.
