In an effort to initiate and preserve Seungjeon-Mu, one of Korean traditional drum dance with high cultural and artistic values, this study analyzed theoretic and historic background of traditional music and dancing, existing researches on traditional drum dance, current initiation profile for drum dance and its contents.
The results of above analysis can be outlineds as follows;
First, Seungjeon-Mu originated from a court dance performed in so called Gyobang-cheong(a sort of official music house) that was established in accordance with the court maid system inherent in Chosun dynasty. The current version of Seungjeon-Mu is characterized by falk dance and music and it has been evolved from a set of drum dances as performed in the level of music and dance for court banquet(Gungjung Jeongjae), which reportedly originated from Gyobang-cheong as a barrack gate of military camp for 3-provincial navy.
Secondly, today's traditional dance and sounds seem a sort of the fine arts in which both components anrt confronted with each other.
However, as a resutl of examining the physiological, phychological and rhythmic structure of Seungjeon-Mu in terms of cultural and historical background and the fine arts, it was found that traditional dance and sounds kept more or less complementary relationships, because both components have something in common with each other.
Thirdly, our traditional court and folk dance had already influenced on each other along with popularization from the establishment of modern theater in 1900 as the end of Chosun dynasty.
In 1905, court maid music was aolished, followed by official maid system in 1907. Finally, court maids and kisaengs could not help but go to their own union, ie. Gwonbeon to survive.
The trends of tradition and stage performance realized by Gwonbeon extended the scope of popularizing and handing down traditional dances. In addition, our traditional dances were inherited from Jangak-cheong via Shin-cheong, followed by Yein group and Yurang Yein group to Kisaeng union.
In the 20th century, traditional dance and sounds were respectively differentiated and specialized due to diversity in the course of tradition as described above. That is, traditional court performance was subdivided into two major categories, i.e. dance and sounds.
Such evolution in the course of haning down traditional dance rather caused traditional dance and sounds to get going away from us step by step.
Fourthly, local kisaengs played a critical role in mediating between court and local dances by means of activities in Gyobang-cheong(a sort of official music house) under 3-provincial naval camp till the end of Chosun dynasty.
Early in 1900, there were Gyobang-cheongs around every government office throughout nation. Local kasaengs used to show dance performances in every court banquet, and then camp back home to keep their own activities in Gyobang-cheon. It implies that traditional court dance was not focused on Hanseong(a former name of Seoul) but propagated nationwide. That is why Seungjeon-Mu has been already selected as one of major intangible cultural assets in Korea.
Fifthly, it is noteworthy that dance motions of Seungjeon-Mu were originated and composed from reinforcement methods available around battlefields in old times.
4 major dancers represent the senior generals who have the right of command, and 12 subsidiary dancers symbolize the common generals and soldiers. As described above, Seungjeon-Mu is a performance in which balance, harmony and solidarity are expressed by means of dance and music.
When Seungjeon-Mu was appointed as one of Korean intangilbe cultural assets, the number of major dancers or their dance motions were initiated as origianl, and the number of subsidiary dancers or their dance motions were somewhat modified later. However, confronted and pair dance(Ssang-ori_of subsidiary dancers have been still performed as original. It could be verified b the withness of Ms. Han, Jeong-ja, a certified Korean traditional artist.
Sixthly, Seungjeon-Mu is a traditional performance that incorporates music and dances in a musical formation called Samhyeon Yukgak along three traditional rhythms such as Yeombul Dodri, Taryeong and Butgeori, on the basis of popular ceremonial music. Seungjeon-Mu is often performed along with some instruments including Ssang-piri(coupled flute), Jeotdae(a sort of Daegeum), Haeguem, Janggo and drum.
In this study, the music of Seungjeon-Mu was sourced from the records of live performance played by the late Ms. Jeon, Sun-nam, which has beenowned by Seungjeon-Mu Preservation Society. Its musical score was made as Jeongganbo(a traditional musical score) by helps of Kim, Gwan-hee, who acts as a senior committee of the National Classical Music Institute. Of course, the variation of sounds(Chang) and rhythm was indicated on Jeongganbo in detail.
Both accompaniment and rhythm of Seungjeon-Mu may flexibly vary depending upon the performance location or the number of dancers.
Seventhly, Seungjeon-Mu has been maintained and initiated from original without any significant change owing to the effors of Ms. Han, Jeong-ja, a certified Korean traditional artist.
Dancing gear and costumes were revived by her in accordance with the wittness of the late Ms. Jeong, Sun-nam. It was reported that drumstick was designed and made as that of the late Ms. Jeong, Sun-nam.
Finally, jihwaja, a shout to mark time in accompanying singing or dancing is used as a sound(Chang) of Seungjeon-Mu. It is characterized by a sound to enhance the morale of soldiers and praise the menrit and virtue of out great adminal Wi, Sun-shin under the pen name of Chungmu-gong. It often accompanies dance and dru, performances.
It was noted that drum dance version of Jeong-eubsa as inherited from the era of Koryeo dynasty went through a series of oral traditions and ultimately changed to the repeat of Jihwaja. It may be a basis of our traditional folk song called the vocalization of Shijo(Krean traditional short lyrics).
As described above, Seungjeon-Mu has been still inherited to us without any significant change for a long time, mainly because it could be preserved by the efforts of the late Ms. Jeong, Sun-nam. who was initiated directly by the last Yi, Guk-hwa and the late Kim., Hae-geum from Gyobang-cheong and later appointed as a certified Korean traditional skilled person.
On the other hand, the current presence of Seungjeon-Mu can be also attributed to the efforts of Ms. Han, Jeong-ja and her followers. In particular, she has dedicated Seungjeon-Mu for various ceremonies and celebrations and performed around Tongyeong area over 400 years and three memorial ceremonies for the late admiral Yi, Sun,-shin(e.g. Chunju Jaehyang, Saenshin jae and Gijae.
