In the future power system, new elements that make up the power system such as renewable energy sources or DC power facilities are being introduced, and this is considered as a new challenge for the existing centralized power system. The increase in renewable energy is expected to not only add to the uncertainties of the electric power system, but also to significantly change the power flow of the system due to the abolition of aging existing generation facilities. In addition, the introduction of DC equipment such as high-voltage DC (HVDC) or flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) enables active and adaptive control of the system unlike the existing passive AC system. Therefore, the power system analysis should be applied with a probabilistic analysis method that can overcome the limitations of conventional deterministic methods. In addition, research on proper planning and operation of active power facilities such as HVDC should be conducted to overcome uncertainties.
This dissertation presents planning and operation strategies for voltage-source converter HVDC (VSC-HVDC) to address future power system uncertainties. At the planning stage of these unpredictable future power systems, additional reinforcements are required to meet the reliability standards, but AC-line reinforcement presents limitations in terms of economics, social acceptability, and efficiency. To address this problem and actively control the power flow, interest in DC-line reinforcement in AC systems is increasing. The method of VSC-HVDC placement in the AC system is proposed in terms of the thermal overload reduction. Probabilistic power flow calculation is used to handle the uncertainties of renewable energy sources, and the loads and results are used to analyze the impact of these uncertainties. Moreover, the probabilistic power system clustering based on load flow is proposed and used to determine the candidate sites for VSC-HVDC. Based on a sensitivity analysis, a placement algorithm is presented for the VSC-HVDC. The candidates presented using the proposed algorithm could resolve the system instabilities owing to uncertainties.
In addition, it is very important to receive accurate information of the AC system in the operation of HVDC. The real-time operation system requires continuous updating of the AC system information, which is a practical difficulty such as communication burden. To solve this problem, this study proposes a novel technique to screen the AC system monitoring area for efficient operation of embedded HVDC. The screening algorithm based on the HVDC sensitivity analysis determines the monitoring area by evaluating the power flow and voltage impact of the AC system as the HVDC operating point changes. Then, using the limited data obtained from the determined area, reliable and efficient grid operation is possible.
The methodologies proposed in this dissertation are based on power transfer distribution factor (PTDF). This is calculated based only on the topology information of the system, so it is not subject to system fluctuations or uncertainties. Therefore, since it does not require repetitive calculations, it is easy to analyze a variable power system. In addition, since the equations using PTDF show the procedure for searching the candidates of the HVDC, it is possible to select the optimal location without applying a optimization technique.
In this dissertation, the effectiveness of the proposed methodologies is verified using the IEEE 39-bus system and the Korean power system. Simulations are performed using PSS/e and Python code, and, for verification of monitoring area, remedial action scheme based on loss minimization and prevention action scheme for operational convenience are applied.
