Real state of cognition for safety and hygiene in nail salon, and analysis of nail treatment tools, contaminated with microorganisms
The awareness of sanitary and safety measures among employees and customers of nail care shops was surveyed and the contamination level of six nail care equipments and tools and contaminant germs were inspected for this study. The followings are the results of the survey and examinations.
1. The followings are the results of the survey regarding the awareness and practice of sanitary and safety measures regarding nail care procedures among employees and customers of nail salons.
First, 93.4% of the surveyed employees were found out to be aware of the chemical components of nail care products, compared to 41.5% with the difficulties in understanding terminology. 81.1% of the employees did not take the safety classes of nail care product makers and associations related to nail care.
Second, 61.1% of the employees said they reused disposable items for the service, while 70.3% of them did not wear masks and goggles when attaching artificial nails for customers.
Third, 62.7% of the employees sterilized the nail care tables after use while 90.6% of them used hand sanitizers before service.
Fourth, 34.4% and 28.7% of the surveyed employees were found out to used the personal tools and disposable items which were recognized by nail care customers, respectively. Though most of nail care products are made of chemicals, the employees were just aware that they are chemical products but not aware of the ‘cautions’ and ‘ingredients’ of the products. The results demonstrated the safety problems.
2. Survey on side effects of nail care service 89.2% of the surveyed customers were found out not to experience any physical side effects from nail care services. Out of the 42 customers who suffered from side effects, 38.1% experienced bleeding while 33.3% and 9.5% suffered from edema/inflammation and nail damage/skin pain, respectively. 81.1% of them regarded the negligent service of employees as the cause of side effects.
3. Survey on the necessity of regulations on nail care service All the surveyed employees and customers said it is 'necessary' to enact a compulsory license system for nail care service. Customers were found out to be more aware of the importance of the regulations on nail care service than employee respondents.
4. A total of 22 kinds of bacteria were detected on the pedicure spa, which was the most contaminated equipment among six examined items. 12 kinds of bacteria were detected on the pusher, sanding block and nipper. Finger bowl was found out to be contaminated with 16 kinds of germs compared to 15 with the nail file.
The germs of genera Paraliobacillus, Chloroflexi, Pseudoalteromonas and Rummeliibacillus were detected only on the pedicure spa. The germs of genera Brevibacterium, Leuconostoc, Dechloromonas, Arthrobacter and Enterococcus were detected only on the sanding block. A limited amount of germs related to food products of genera Lactobacillus, Pediococcus and Firmicutes and germs of genus Kocuria were detected on the file. A limited amount of germs of genera Turicibacter, Streptomyces and Pseudoalteromonas were detected on the finger bowl. The distribution of different bacteria on different tools suggests that each customer and nail salon were contaminated with different kinds of germs disproportionately.
Since nail care tools are consistently in contact with the hands of nail care employees and customers, the bacterial contamination is likely to increases in accordance with the time of usage. If customers and employees wash their hands before service and use sterilized tools, they will be less likely be infected by bacteria.
The nail care service industry is a high valued-added cosmetic sector, which is expected to grow and change in the coming years. In contrast to the growing market and industrial expansion, the sanitary and safety system is not established well. Therefore, the immediately applicable regulations need to be set up to protect both nail care service workers and customers and promote the nail care service industry. The regulations should incorporate the national safety and sanitary management system for nail care service workers and customers, and a systematic and independent field needs to be established for training the safety and sanitary nail care practice.
