Existing studies of language variation have focused mainly on phonological variations, with relatively few exploring syntactic variations. This study aims to investigate the variation of verb forms following comparative as and than in English, adopting the lexico-grammatical approach. Specifically, four comparative constructions containing as and than are examined: as well as, as … as, more than, and rather than. In order to carry out empirical analyses, ten English corpora are analyzed including six Brown family corpora (including Brown, Frown, AmE06, LOB, FLOB, BE06), COCA (Corpus of Contemporary American English), BNC (British National Corpus), COHA (Corpus of Historical American English), and GloWbE (Corpus of Global Web-based English). In the analyses, the following factors are considered with the given variation: national varieties (British vs. American and world Englishes), register (spoken, fiction, newspaper, magazine and academic), and diachronic changes.
The results can be summarized as follows: They indicate that while gerunds in as-constructions serve as a stable variant reigning supreme in both varieties, than-constructions show marked variability. Thus, it turns out to be that the comparative markers determine variability, not the national varieties. In terms of genres, overall instances of the as well as and rather than constructions were particularly frequent in written and formal registers, whereas the as … as construction is mostly found in spoken and informal texts, indicating the as … as construction is a more colloquial expression. Diachronic analysis revealed that the to-infinitive was a dominant verb form in as-constructions during the nineteenth century until the rising gerund took over its position. It is notable that the time of the shift varies according to the formality of each expression. While the shift occurred before 1900 in the as … as construction that is more preferred in informal contexts, it occurred more than a decade later in the as well as construction, confirming that incipient language change starts from colloquial language. On the other hand, as for than-constructions, the bare infinitive used to be the predominant variant throughout the two centuries. It was not until the 1990s that the frequency of gerunds began to rise dramatically and exceed that of bare infinitives. This recent shift, perhaps still ongoing, shed light on the diffuse variation in than-clauses. Since language change presupposes a period of variation (Liberman 1994), than-constructions that are going through the transitional period, tend to display diverse use of variants. Findings of world Englishes indicate that most English speaking countries are likely to be influenced by American English, while Ireland, New Zealand and Australia that were once colonies of England still seem to be under influence of British English.
The findings of the present study verified the lexico-grammatical approach, in that variation patterns and the time of language change display similar tendencies according to each type of comparative marker, as and than. This study also contributes to our understanding of the relationship between language variation and language change. It thus suggests that it is essential to integrate both synchronic and diachronic factors in describing language variation, in order to obtain a more precise picture of the phenomenon.
언어의 변이현상에 대한 기존의 연구들은 주로 음성?음운론적인 변이가 그 중심을 이루었고, 통사적 변이는 상대적으로 드물게 연구되어 왔다. 이 연구의 목적은 lexico-grammatical approach를 기반으로 하여, 영어의 비교 표현인 as 와 than 에 후속하는 동사 형태의 변이양상을 파악해보고자 한다. 그 중에서도 as 와 than 을 포함하는 비교구문 중 as well as, as … as, more than, and rather than 총 네 가지를 연구대상으로 삼았다. 실증적인 분석을 위해 6개의 Brown family corpora (Brown, Frown, AmE06, LOB, FLOB, BE06), COCA (Corpus of Contemporary American English), BNC (British National Corpus), COHA(Corpus of Historical American English), GloWbE (Corpus of Global Web-based English), 총 열 개의 영어 코퍼스가 사용되었다.
