Future Internet architectures will result in fast information response time, and low latency will be a main feature of evolving fifth generation (5G) radio networks. Moreover, a lot of devices will be connected in Internet of Things (IoT) which will generate massive amount of data. Therefore, to ensure the widespread adoption of 5G applications and IoT, low latency, security, mobility, and scalable content distribution support is required. Information-centric networking (ICN) is a newly proposed emerging Internet paradigm in which communication is based on content names irrespective of their locations. In ICN paradigm, a unique name is assigned to content, and the content is retrieved without knowing the location of content where it resides unlike traditional host oriented systems.
At the same time, edge computing offers computation, data, and application services in close proximity of end users. The core idea of edge computing is to bring the resources at the network edge, where the edge means any computing and network resources along the path between data sources and cloud data centers. The edge computing and ICN offers an opportunity to reduce latency, support mobility, security, and scalability.
In this regard, first, we provide a mechanism for the mitigation of delays, which occur when nodes attempt to save parts of chunks under wireless ICN conditions. The proposed method reduces the Content Download Time by prefetching unobtained chunks from a node that only has part of a chunk prior to the Consumer(s) request and brings the content closer to Consumer(s).
Second, we propose ICN-based naming mechanism for Data broadcast control in push-based IoT scenarios. We consider two application scenarios such as smart building and vehicular ICN networks. The protocol includes a robust content namespace design, device namespace design, and amendments to the data packet format and unsolicited data policy of the forwarding engine of conventional ICN. The proposed method controls the number of unnecessary data packets in the network.
We also design and implement an open source framework based on ICN and edge cloud computing. We present a prototype implementation and extensive testbed experimentation and simulation to validate and evaluate our proposed framework. Our extensive experiments show that ICN with edge cloud reduces the backbone traffic on the edge node and cloud node as well.
Finally, ICN is applied with edge computing for 5G as a promising approach to reduce latency and the backbone network traffic. ICN is applied locally at adhoc level i.e., device to device communication and in Radio Access Network (RAN) and provide ICN application layer support at the Base Station. Furthermore, ICN and edge caching is only useful for static content and the requests for the dynamic content have to be passed all the way through the core network which increases the latency in 5G networks. Therefore, we also provide content prefetching strategy based on ICN naming scheme in order to address the dynamic content issue in 5G networks. For the evaluation we used our self developed ICN-based edge cloud computing testbed with modification for device to device communication and edge application. The outcomes are evaluated through extensive experiments in terms of cache hit ratio which is inversely related to end to end latency. The greater the cache hit ratio; the lower latency will be. Our findings confirmed that enabling ICN at the devices level is a best choice to reduce the backbone traffic on the core network. Furthermore, we present research challenges that are associated with the intersection of ICN and edge computing for future networks especially upcoming 5G networks.
