In the late Habsburg Empire, the nobility of Bohemia was a wealthy and powerful elite with sprawling country estates and political influence to match. Relying on the venerable Emperor Franz Josef for their political privileges, Bohemian aristocrats were largely a-national, standing aloof from the nationality conflicts that threatened to tear the supra-national Monarchy apart in the late nineteenth century. When the Austro-Hungarian Empire collapsed in 1918, Bohemian nobles found themselves in the new country of Czechoslovakia, a nation-state whose bourgeois Czech leaders considered the nobility a national and social enemy. Early in 1919 the Czech National Assembly passed a massive land reform with the goal of redistributing noble land to Czech farmers.
My dissertation argues that nobles overcame their previous disdain for national politics and turned to nationalism as a means of defending their land against the reform. They used two different strategies for opposing confiscation. Legislators had justified the land reform by arguing that it would return to Czechs land stolen by German “barons” in the seventeenth century, so many nobles dug up historical ties to the Czech national movement in an effort to recast themselves as a Czech nobility. Other nobles emphasized their identity as members of Czechoslovakia's ethnic German minority, petitioning the League of Nations for protection against the land reform's “discriminatory” nature. My evidence offers a rare detailed glimpse of a group in the process of becoming national; taken as a case study of nationalization, this dissertation adds to our understanding of the relationship of politics, class, and ethnicity to the formation of national identity.
The Bohemian nobility was also both an oft-invoked symbol and a victim in a thirty-year national and social revolution that changed the face of Czechoslovakia and Central Europe from 1918 to 1948. Land reform was only part of the picture, as successive waves of revolution displaced old elites, scrambled social hierarchies, and eventually cleansed the region of ethnic minorities. I use the story of the Bohemian nobility—both from their own point of view and from that of Czechoslovak revolutionaries—to give color and dimension to the great changes that shook the region in the first half of the twentieth century.
By 1948, there were few nobles left in Czechoslovakia, though the path to exile was far from straight. During the interwar period, the nobles' national strategy appeared to bear fruit, as they lost only half of their property to the land reform. But there were further trials yet to come. Many German nobles embraced National Socialism in the 1930s, believing it held the promise of a rebirth for the nobility and a new home in a revived German Empire. Others stood by Czechoslovakia during the dark years after 1938, despising Adolf Hitler and seeing the Czech state as the modern incarnation of the ancient Bohemian Kingdom. Most nobles weathered the war—by either collaborating with the Germans or withdrawing quietly to their estates—only to lose their land and citizenship in the anti-German convulsions that followed liberation in 1945. A few Czech loyalists held on until 1948, when the triumphant Communists confiscated their remaining property. With the cleansing of nobles, along with other Germans, class enemies, and the political right, the post-war revolution finally eliminated the last remnants of the Old Regime in Czechoslovakia.
