유아 영어 지도에 있어 TPRS 적용 연구
The purpose of this study is to give an in-depth description of the process in which Korean children learn English through the method of Total Physical Response Storytelling (TPRS, henceforth). Applying TPRS to four children, all of whom are aged 7 and attend a kindergarten in Masan City, the study tries to investigate whether the method is effective in terms of teaching English as well as improving emotional responses. The study employs a qualitative approach, carefully describing children's progress during the class by collecting data through observations, video recordings, and in-depth interviews. The information gathered through data collection is analyzed and interpreted. The primary focus of the study is on how the affective factors, specifically the learner's self-confidence, play a role in learning English.
The study finds out that TPRS has some advantages in teaching English to young children. First, physical activities mixed with interesting fairy tales turn out to be very effective teaching materials in English education. Second, TPRS is effective in that it allows the learners to willingly participate in class on their own, even without the teacher's prodding. Third, TPRS is also useful in making the learners remember many words learned during the class. Fourth, the study shows that the use of first language is unavoidable especially when introducing certain words in fairy tales. Fifth, TPRS makes it possible for the learners to use simple sentences to re-tell the story even when the teacher presents a simplified version of a story with complicated sentences.
The study also shows that TPRS is instrumental as far as the emotional aspect is concerned, allowing certain learners to respond differently from others even when they are exposed to the same teaching method. It turns out that learners can be divided into two groups, active vs. passive, in terms of their emotional responses as well as their attitude toward learning English. The learners with high self-confidence show active responses in the class. They are full of confidence, very competitive, and sometimes aggressive. In addition, they are always curious about something and ask many questions. Learners with these behaviors, it turns out, are highly motivated. On the other hand, learners with average and low self-confidence do not show such active responses. The study shows, however, that the teacher's enthusiasm and praises may have a positive effect on such learners with average and low self-confidence.
The study also exhibit some problems with the TPRS approach. First, the class using TPRS could be restricted by the difficulty of selecting books to be used in classes. It seems that fairy tales are especially suitable mainly because they are easy to be used with TPR and the sentences in the texts are easily modifiable. Second, the learners could experience difficulty when they express words that they cannot easily find matching TPR motions or when they encounter words which they are not particularly interested in. It is also possible that they cannot express certain words by motions or TPR even though they can remember them. Third, the utterance of sentences may seem unnatural because the learners consider motions before locution, even though they already know the words. Fourth, learners may be confused when they find out that certain words that they have already learned through TPR turn out to have different meanings.
The study concludes that all learners show interest in learning English through a method that mixes story-telling with physical activities, and that such is the case even when there are differences in the types of books used in classes. These learners are not only more enthusiastic about speaking in English than children with no such training, but also actively participate in the activities, showing that the method influences the learners in a positive way. These results appear to support previous researches telling us that children's language development are influenced by learner's affective factors as well as the teacher's guiding methods. They also seem to reinforce our assumption that language learners should be exposed to situations that will allow them to use English naturally, stimulating their interests and boosting their confidence in their abilities.
