Building upon previous researches on punctuation and translation, this paper aims to address the following research questions: first, how the punctuation marks in ST are shifted in TT; second, what strategies can be employed to translate the ST punctuation marks.
It is of notable interest that the translation of punctuation marks in English-Korean translation often invites 'headaches' due to punctuation system differences and that the issue has been neglected in the academic discipline of translation studies.
Considering that English and Korean share little commonality on the level of langue, the possibility of achieving textual equivalence through formal correspondence is constrained, if not precluded. Under such circumstances, except for rare situations where formal correspondence can be achieved by substituting SL punctuation with TL punctuation, we have to arrive at equivalence through translation shifts, which will be the core of the discussion herein. Of course, this research will also look into the rare cases of formal correspondence, since the universality of languages will allow such cases in specific situations.
In fact, both processes require thorough analysis, as either through formal correspondence or through translation shift, we have to achieve textual equivalence, in which we do not transfer meaning between languages, but replace an SL meaning by a TL meaning that can function the same way in the situation being represented linguistically.
Although there are a number of punctuation marks in English, this paper limits its scope to colon, dash, and semicolon, since more widely-used punctuation marks, such as comma and period, tend to be “fixed” in punctuation practices in rigid molds and as the functions and usages of such marks share much similarity with the equivalent ones in Korean language. On the contrary, the punctuation marks that are dealt with herein often invite confusion and disagreement of interpretation in translating, as the equivalent marks do not exist in Korean or the functions and usages show discrepancy. The data that serves as a basis for the research is taken from novels―7 STs and 21 TTs (3 TTs for each ST). The punctuation points used in such genre effectively express and build relationships between words and sentences.
This dissertation comprises six chapters: Introduction (Chapter 1), Definition and Functions of English and Korean Punctuation (Chapter 2), Shift and Translation Strategy of Colon (Chapter 3), Shift and Translation Strategy of Dash (Chapter 4), Shift and Translation Strategy of Semicolon (Chapter 5), and Conclusion (Chapter 6).
Chapter 1 deals with the aim and the motivation of the research, as well as the research questions and methodology, among other things. Chapter 2 rebuilds the concept of punctuation by exploring and accommodating the diverse perspectives and by reflecting the modern tendency. Based on a clearer notion, the chapter seeks to illustrate how individual punctuation marks of English and Korean take on the functional role as unique linguistic entities: they are addressed in alphabetical order, with their functions and usage presented. Chapter 3, Chapter 4, and Chapter 5 deal with the first and second research questions stated above: they seek to demonstrate how each punctuation points used in ST are dealt with in English-Korean translation. Specifically, the research first classifies how the punctuations in ST are translated in TT into two categories: Replacement of SL Punctuation with "Form-alike" TL Punctuation and Shift of SL Punctuation in TT. Then, for each category, the research evaluates whether the translation strategies meet the norms of the TL. Following the process, the paper attempts to see whether individual strategies achieve translational equivalence. Based on the analysis, the Chapters then select and classify effective translational strategies and discuss how such strategies can be deployed and what attentions should be paid in the process of translation. Chapter 6 provides a summarized description and the results of the research, followed by the implications for translation practice. The chapter also acknowledges the limitations of the study and presents potential future research topics.
The author hopes the research will contribute to triggering further discussion on the translation of punctuation and to offering guidelines for those in the translation profession.
