The present study purposed to find the identities, natural landforms and principles of organic harmony of traditional villages through presenting the process that the location and space of traditional villages were formed. In addition, from the elements of physical planning were derived planning guidelines applicable to contemporary residential complexes.
The physical characteristics of traditional villages reflecting the thoughts and culture of the Chosun Dynasty were analyzed gradationally through five steps, focused on village founders’ selection of location, the location of the head family house, the formation of village space through the construction of major houses, the recognition of surrounding landform through main view objects, the formation of roads, and the process of overcoming the location characteristics of the villages. First, changes in the location characteristic of traditional villages according to cultural and social factors were analyzed. Second, the characteristic of space formation according to the location characteristic of villages was analyzed. Third, the recognition of the landform of major buildings was analyzed through examining main view objects according to village location. Fourth, the road structure of villages was analyzed for interpreting the recognition of the relative space of villages. Lastly, the continuity of the location of traditional villages was analyzed through the concept of geomancy. For these analyses, we grouped eight traditional villages in the Chosun Dynasty under study into those founded in the early Chosun Dynasty (Hahoi, Hangae, Yangdong), those founded before the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592 (Dalksil, Oiam), and those founded after the Japanese invasion (Otgol, Hoji, Haejeo). Villages founded during the late Chosun Dynasty were excluded because of rapid modernization.
In the results of analyzing the location and space characteristics of the traditional villages, we found early trends and late trends in the location and road structure of traditional villages. As to the location of villages, the concept of opposing mountain became gradually obscure and the concept of cultivated land became clearer over time. Along with the location characteristic of villages, the road structure of villages also showed the tendency of integration of the approach and inner roads in the Hoji and Haejeo Villages founded during the late period. This means that traditional four?stage road structure of outer road, approach, inner road and branch road was changed to three?stage road structure of outer road, inner road (approach) and branch road. Such traditional villages show diversity in location and space characteristics according to the ideal form of village influenced by social ruling ideology during the days of foundation. From the diversity, we found similar principles in the process that traditional villages were formed.
First, at a village located in the foreground of the guardian mountain, the head family house and major houses were situated along the ridgeline or the range of the guardian mountain, or at least in an area higher than its surroundings.
Second, the head family house and major houses for the ruling class of the village took a natural exposure in consideration of the natural topography of the location rather than the absolute southern exposure without consideration of natural topography.
Third, in case there were opposing mountains encircling the village based on the guardian mountain, houses were situated hierarchically in front of the head family house along the symbolic axis of the guardian mountain and the opposing mountains, forming a bell?shaped village. However, there were exceptional cases when cultivated lands were situated within the area encircled by the guardian mountains.
Fourth, major houses were situated in compliance with the landform, but regardless of the location characteristic of village, buildings and houses were planned to have the same main view objects as the head family house did.
Fifth, the inner roads of a village were designed to prevent mild or steep slopes in residences, to minimize damage to the natural landform, and to make it easy to access the head family house, the important facility, from any part of the village.
Sixth, to shield residences or houses from the cold northwesterly wind in winter, a densely or mixedly planted windbreak forest was made or a mound was built. In this way, vulnerable parts of the villages were reinforced continuously.
The construction of the head family house and major houses according to the location of traditional village has meanings in the aspects of identity, compliance with natural landform, and sustainability, and it suggests six considerations applicable to the construction of contemporary residences.
First, the size of residences should be planned in a way of preserving the natural state without excessive change of natural landform. Second, buildings should be deployed in compliance with landform so that houses can be maintained and managed with low energy consumption. Third, identity can be established when individual residences are built based on the characteristic of the village residents. Fourth, architectural planning should consider outstanding mountain peaks or symbolic main view objects around the residences. Fifth, roads should be designed in curved form and in consideration of accessibility to important facilities. Sixth, the continuity of residences is possible when residents, nature and buildings are formed into an organic aggregate and the whole village is managed through the residents’ participation.
In conclusion, a traditional village is a place where space and people meet each other and share harmony and beauty. In a traditional village, nature embraces the village, and people in the village embrace nature while complying with the order of nature. Thus, artificial building structures in the village are a part of an organic aggregat
