장애인에 대한 사회적거리감 영향요인 = Affecting Factors of Social Distance for Person with Disabilities
This research is conducted to see the amount of social distances the disabled person and the social welfare expert in the area of disabled people feel, and understand the main factors that affect social distance. The concrete experimental questions are the following: Does a difference exist in the amount of social distance the disabled person and the social welfare expert feel? Does factors such as recognition, contact, and general factors affect the amount of social distance a disabled person and the social welfare expert feel?
The research was conducted using data from research for recognition of the ‘Anti-Discrimination Disabilities Act’in April 1, 2008, which was done by Korean Disabilities Rehabilitation Committee, subdivision of Human Rights to select subjects for analyzing. The population for disabled was randomly selected throughout the nation using the telephone book as a source of population. According to the density of population in the telephone book, 1000 were selected, and 82 who answered disabled were selected to be analyzed. The research was done through telephone call from July 21, 2008 to August 8, 2008.
Due to a request from Korean Disabilities Rehabilitation Committee, the expert set the population to be the members of RI Korea, and sent a survey via email to 350 people, including civic groups focusing on disabilities, heads of organizations, and professors related to this area. This research was conducted from August 1 to August 23, 2008. The survey results from person who revealed irrelevance towards the topic of disabilities and results that contained incomplete case were eliminated, which lead to 110 survey results to be completely analyzed.
The main results of the research were the following. First, the amount of social distance a disabled person feels is much larger than that of the social welfare expert. Second, the difference in recognition factors and social distance among two populations, the disabled person and social welfare expert, turned out to be statistically insignificant. A fixed idea questionnaire, “Be a burden to other people,”was held more strongly in disabled person than in that of the social welfare expert. Third, the disabled person who has a family with disabilities feels more social distance than who does not have a family with disabilities. For social welfare experts, the population which had positive attitude towards the quality of contact, and neighbors with disabled felt less social distance. Fourth, for disabled person with their family’s monthly income less than $1,000 did not feel as much social distance as to the family with monthly income greater than $2,000. Fifth, for disabled, fixed ideas played more influence than negative feelings, and for social welfare expert, negative feelings were more influential than fixed ideas. Sixth, the influence of quality of contact on connection was not verified. However, it is statistically significant that among the populations, especially in social welfare experts, the population that had positive quality of contact had higher average of social distances.
Many implications and deductions of the results of this research can be made. First, this research can be used beyond its purpose as recognition research on disabled person and serve to understand the purpose of the act of discrimination during everyday life. This adds importance to the fact that this has revealed reasons for directivity of the actions of the disabled and social welfare experts. This could help to organize plans to reduce social distances the disabled and the social expert feels. This type of program will include ways to reduce negative feelings and fixed concepts for both non-disabled and the disabled people.
Secondly, from the result that the number of contact for the disabled is much less than that of the social welfare expert shows that programs that require the disabled people to participate is needed. Especially for disabled people, locomotion is inconvenient, so there should be programs available aiding their transportations, increasing such interactions among people.
Third, different from the previous research which were conducted among public, this research suggested that fixed ideas had more influence than negative feelings on the amount of social distances felt. Therefore, in order to reduce social distance felt by the disabled people, negative feelings need to be conquered in order to use fixed concepts in reverse effect. For example, emphasis on disabled person’s success could be used to accentuate factors of success, and use the mass media to straighten stereotypes and form positive images. Also, they should participate in programs to experience self-determination and perform their part in a rightful act, which hopefully will lead to the destruction of existing negative fixed ideas, and induce a turnover of recognition. This should also be the case for children with disabilities under the circumstances that this happens naturally as they become more socialized.
