Joseon royal mausoleums(朝鮮王陵), the tombs of Kings/Queens during the Joseon dynasty, were decorated by stone figures(石物) which were placed around them. The stone statues(石人像) of royal mausoleums have outstanding formative beauty since they were made by the best craftsmen at the times. In this study, the formative beauty of stone statues, a type of stone figures of royal mausoleums, as well as how the distinctive features of stone statues with the time changed, are examined. The time of stone statues’ production which is different from what is known to the general public are also inquired into.
Joseon royal mausoleums have both traditional and foreign features. In the early Joseon period, mausoleums were constructed after the system of Chinese royal mausoleums and the stone statues were influenced by those of Unified Silla(統一新羅) and Koryo(高麗). The system of constructing royal mausoleums was established in early Joseon period, and it was concretized in late Joseon period.
Stone statues are divided into Civil Officials(文石人) wearing official uniforms and Military Officials(武石人) in armors. The Civil and Military Officials are representative servants of the Kings, and their role is to assist their Kings permanently, ever after they die. Military Officials were especially the symbol of royal mausoleums since they were not permitted to be set up at tombs of general public. The dresses and ornaments of stone statues are not same as those which people of Joseon dynasty wore and were splendid with decoration.
Next, I will discuss about how the stone statues changed throughout the time. The style of stone statues had changed almost every 50 years with the historical changes.
Firstly, stone statues made in the early 15th century were strongly influenced by the style of stone statues of royal mausoleums during the Koryo Dynasty since Joseon was not yet settled down to develop its unique beauty. In the late 15th century, stone statues started to have Joseon’s own beauty after setting up and codifying the system of the country during the periods of King Sejong(世宗, 1397~1450) and King Seongjong(成宗, 1457~1494). However, stone statues manufactured in the late 15th century were not stylized in a fixed form, and various styles were tried upon. Consequently, stone statues made in the 15th century can be defined to have followed the form of Koryo and that they showned diversity.
Secondly, stone statues produced from the 16th to the early 17th centuries share similarities. In the 16th century, stone statues were considered as figures who protect the royal mausoleums for a constancy. Thus, stone statues were made in huge and simple form, to have them kept in royal mausoleums permanently. Stone statues produced in early 16th century have front, back and side that are clearly divided, and a cross section of the stone statues looks like a square-shaped which is different from real human body. However, the will of the craftsmen who want to make the stone statues protect royal mausoleums can be seen as the portion of the face got bigger and the position of stone statues became simpler. In consequence, stone statues made in the 16th century can be defined as simplicity.
After Japan's Invasion of Korea in 1592(壬辰倭亂) and 1636(丙子胡亂), the royal family of Joseon Dynasty lost their norms and were to establish all their systems newly. Stone statues also showed such trend but there were some difficulties of making stone statues due to the loss of records by fire after the 17th century. In the 17th century, stone statues were manufactured by observing previous stone statues and they reveal simplicity just like those made in the 16th century.
Since the production period of making stone statues was shortened, simplicity is observed in engraving skills. Wrinkles in clothes were inscribed by lines and the detailed description of the face was standardized. In conclusion, the stone statues made from the 16th to early 17th centuries can be described to be shown simplicity, but the difference is stone statues in the 16th century show simplicity only in their shapes, but stone statues in the 17th century reveal simplicity also in the techniques.
Thirdly, stone statues made from the late 17th to late 18th centuries display reality. After the fall of Ming(明) in 1662, Joseon created its own Sinocentrism(朝鮮中華主義), attempting to succeed the orthodoxy of Ming(明). Therefore, during the reign of King Sukjong(肅宗, 1661~1720), subject matters of culture were usually seeked from in the real world, rather than from China or ideal things. Following this trend, the clothes of stone statues came from the clothes used in the real world, and the understanding of the body became more realistic.
Stone statues made in the late 17th century have a simplified outline, but demonstrated reality in detailed descriptions. In the early 18th century, the decoration of the dress and ornaments of the times were applied to those of stone statues. Stone statues in the late 18th century are similar to real human in their posture, facial expression and proportion. But, this substantiality ended with the start of the royal in-law government(勢道政治) in the 19th century. As held regal sway, the culture of Joseon Dynasty slackened and the reality of stone statues also had a tendency to dwindle.
Based on such changes of stone statues styles, I inquired into the times of stone statues that are unknown to the general public. The number of stone statues whose time of production is unknown is seven, and they can be classified into three types : First is the case of constructing a complete new stone statues after a long time ; Second is the case of partially repairing the stone statues manufactured in the former ages ; Third is the case of reusing the stone statues already made in the early or middle Joseon Dynasty.
The first types, newly produced stone statues, include stone statues placed in Ham Kyung province(咸鏡道), Jeongneung of Queen Sindeok(神德王后 貞陵) and Military Official of Sureung of Posthumous King Munjo(文祖 綏陵). Stone statues in Ham Kyung province is generally known to be newly constructed by King Taejo(太祖, 1335~1408), but it turned out to be constructed during the reign of King Taejong(太宗, 1367~1422), according to the documents. Jeongneung(神德王后 貞陵) is presumed to be made in around 1583, judging by its feature. Sureung(文祖 綏陵) was initially built in 1830 but Military Official was added in 1846.
The second types, partially repaired stone statues, include Civil Official placed in the left side of Hyeolleung of King Munjong(文宗 顯陵) and stone statues in Sulleung of Queen Gonghye(恭惠王后 順陵). Hyeolleung of King Munjong(文宗 顯陵) was built in 1457, but the Civil Official beside it is predicted to have been repaired partially in 1513. Stone statues in Sulleung of Queen Gonghye(恭惠王后 順陵) was constructed in 1474, but there is a record that it was partially mended in 1648. stone statues in Sulleung(順陵) also shows the feature of both early and late Joseon dynasty.
The third types, reused stone statues, include stone statues in Illeung of King Sunjo(純祖 仁陵), Yereung of King Cheoljong(哲宗 睿陵), and Hwikyungwon of Subin Park(綏嬪朴氏 輝慶園). The royal mausoleums of King Sunjo(1800-1834), the 23th King of Joseon, was built in 1834, but reused the stone statues of royal mausoleums of King Sejong(世宗), the 4th King of Joseon, which was made in 1446. The stone statues of King Cheoljong(哲宗, 1831~1863), the 25th King of Joseon, reused stone statues of royal mausoleums of King Jungjong(中宗, 1488~1544), the 11th King of Joseon. Hwikyungwon of Subin Park(綏嬪朴氏 輝慶園) which built in 1822 reused the stone statues of Crown Prince Sado(思悼世子 垂恩墓) made in 1762.
Because the style of tombs tend to be conservative, the change of styles are also made slowly. Likewise, because Joseon royal mausoleums change slowly, it can be understood through the entire Joseon dynasty. Among them, stone statues at royal mausoleums represent the artwork of the Joseon royal family, and are the major sculpture at that time. In this study, I closely examined how changes took place in the feature of stone statues in royal mausoleums. I will further study the stone statues of the Joseon royal mausoleums at a broader perspective and closely analyze the stone statues of scholars' tombs, to widen the boundaries of stone statues arts during the Joseon times.
