Customers no longer show traditional consumer behavior. Traditional consumer behavior and experience consumer behavior show a very contrasting difference. Traditional consumer behavior placing more weight on characteristics and benefits of a product defined consumers as information processors and assumed that they make rational purchase decisions. Problems of this traditional consumer behavior are that it did not consider true desires or practicability of consumers, that it was too analytic, and that it focused on performing a decision correctly rather than making a correct decision. Consumers today try to grow out of stereotypes that they must do something to meet their basic needs. They want to experience their potentials for personal fulfillment. They strive to maximize their investment of time and money on areas of interest and want to be rewarded from their investment (Bernd H. Schmitt, 1999). To satisfy these desires of consumers, companies these days collect and analyze vivid responses of market mavens, opinion leaders and early adopters swiftly and develop new products while adopting ideas of consumers to reduce failure risks.
One of marketing key words paying attention to these phenomena can be said to be experience marketing. The time of emphasizing only technological aspects in selling goods is gone away; experience marketing is a 21st century model of marketing strategy which meets even internal value and aesthetic desires of consumers by steadily implanting product and brand image through unique services or events.
Lately are emerging business models of providing goods and services free of charge in reward for demands and attention of consumers, which is a tool of experience marketing. These phenomena in Asia can be found in openings of 'Sample Plaza' in Shanghai, China, 'Club C' in Japan and 'Sample Lab'. Among these 'Sample Lab', the nation's first membership brand experience lounge, merits attention, where consumers can use and evaluate many different items of goods ahead of time. 'Sample Lab' can be seen as an epoch-making scene of marketing where consumers can obtain information about products online and visit offline stores to purchase products booked in advance, which fully supplements spatiotemporal weak points of online and offline stores each other.
The present study researched effects that newly-tried means of experience marketing like 'brand sample shop' have upon consumers. This study focused on the following: First, whether positive experience within 'brand sample shop' has a favorable effect on purchase and recommendation intention; second, whether members of different ranks show different purchase and recommendation intention.
On the basis of results of above research and literature references, this study set up and tested hypotheses. For this purpose this study surveyed customers who visited 'Sample Lab', the nation's first 'brand sample shop'; and analyzed 148 pieces of survey questionnaires among those collected. Statistical analysis used SPSS/WIN 12.0.
For this purpose this writer examined previous theories and studies; and set up four hypotheses and obtained the following results:
First, it was found that cognitive, behavioral and relational factors among experience factors within 'sample shop' had a significant effect upon purchase intention of consumers; however, sensible and emotional factors did not have a significant effect upon purchase intention of consumers; in fact, there has been much research about emotion among experience factors affecting consumers within shops; yet, unlike studies suggesting that emotional factors have a greater effect upon purchase intention, it was found that only cognitive, behavioral and relational factors had a significant effect upon purchase intention; which seems to arise from characteristics of 'comprehensive sample shop' visited for needs, not shops dealing with a single brand.
Second, it was found that positive experience of cognitive, behavioral and relational factors within 'sample shop' had a significant effect upon increasing recommendation intention of consumers; however, sensible and emotional factors did not have a significant effect upon recommendation intention of consumers, just like upon purchase intention; experience factors had a significant effect in order of cognitive, behavioral and relational factors; which signifies that the purpose of customers visiting 'sample shop' is in recognizing, using and relating products rather than in experiencing happy feeling and emotion.
Third, it was found that paid members with higher ranks had stronger intention of purchasing and recommending products; which signifies that the higher membership rank is, the higher level of interest in products experienced within 'sample shop', which has an active effect upon purchase and recommendation intention.
Fourth, according to research into the corelation between membership ranks and experience factors affecting purchase intention, it was found that cognitive experience alone affects purchase intention; paid members with higher ranks signify showing higher level of participation in 'sample shop' than free members. It can be interpreted that the higher level of participation customers have, the greater interest and fun they have, and they tend to have divergent thinking.
Fifth, according to research into the corelation between membership ranks and experience factors affecting recommendation intention, it was found that only the corelation between membership ranks and experience factors affects recommendation intention.
Finally, the present study obtained academic and theoretical implications as follows: First, in the present situations where there is no research about 'sample shop', a new tool of marketing, this study about what factors of 'sample shop' as a scene of experience marketing affect consumers has a significance.
Second, this study found out that within 'sample shop' adopting factors of experience marketing, each factor has ultimately a significant effect upon purchase and recommendation intention. Given that there is little study about the effects of existing experience factors upon purchase and recommendation intention, this study has a significance.
Meanwhile, this study obtained the following implications in regard to marketing: Until now 'sample shop' is in the stage of introduction in the nation. When it comes to 'comprehensive sample shop' where consumers can experience various brands of products, 'Sample Lab' which is a background of this study is the only one in the nation. Thus, this study has a significance in that it can present development proposals through effect test of experience factors when 'sample shop' is activated and common in the future.
