(A) comparative study of Korean and Japanese folktales about stepmothers
A lot of research has been done on literature dealing with the troubles between stepmothers and their stepchildren. However, oral tales, the spiritual product of the lower classes, have been neglected. Therefore, more detailed study of what kinds of oral literature exist and how it has been handed down has not begun in earnest. Also collecting materials and classifying them by types are urgent, as well as identifying relation with neighboring countries Korea has exchanged a lot of culture. In this study, Korean folktales about stepmothers handed down orally were classified, similar types to Japanese folktales were sorted out, and then similarity and differences by motifs were compared. In the review of folktale types, the position of Korean and Japanese tales were investigated and the direction of further research was forecasted by comparing folktales between the East and the West. The results of this research are as follows.
1. In Korea and Japan, when and how stepmother folktales in the two countries were formed and what the background of their being handed down for a long time is were examined.
In ancient times, family systems in Korea and Japan were dominated by the paternal line. In the marriage system, however, the son-in-law stayed in the house of his wife's parents for a long time, and then returned after a designated period to his own family's home. Due to this circumstance, stepmothers and their stepchildren did have much time to stay together so that the probability of troubles was very low. The fact that documentary literature dealing with troubles between stepmother and stepchild remained in spite of the circumstances at that time tells us that tales of stepmothers had already been formulated. In the formation of stepmother tales in both countries, the story of maltreatment of the stepmother in the tales of filial devotion, Buddhism, and the virtuous woman from China, was significant. That stepmother tales have been continuously handed down to the present time might be derived from both cultural exchange as an external factor and the prevalence of documentary literature dealing with stepmothers as an internal factor. In the late Joseon Dynasty, there was a change in the family system of patrilocal residence (夫處居住制) producing troubles with stepmothers, and a class of female readers enjoying stepmother stories emerged. Domestic morals emerged as a social problem due to the emphasis of Confucian ideas by the reinforcement of Sung Confucianism. These social factors produced novels about stepmothers and made them popular. Also, in Japan a class of female readers existed in the Muromachi Period connected from the Heian Period, and there was also a change in the marriage system of paralegal residence. In addition, stepmother-type documentary literature, which deals with retributive justice and miracles from the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy according to the prevalence of Buddhism by taking advantage of the confused era caused by war, became widespread. Documentary literature contributed to the tradition by producing new tales about stepmothers as well as maintaining the previous oral tradition.
2. Collected tales about stepmothers were classified by motifs, and examined in regard to correspondence relation with types of Japanese folktales. The results are as below.
The 151 pieces of stepmother tales were selected from Compendium of Korean Oral Literature in 82 volumes and Korea Oral Tales of Im, Seok- Jae in 12 volumes. Most stepmother tales were developed by stepmothers who have hostile relationship with their stepchildren. In other words, (1) stepmothers joined a family member due to biological mothers’ death, (2) stepchildren were maltreated by stepmothers and (3) overcame the crisis due to the help of supporters, (4) stepchildren had happy marriage, and (5) stepmothers were punished. These organic compositions of tales showed the main theme of overcoming hardship miraculously. For 151 pieces of stepmother tales, they were classified by motifs and the orders of story arrangements so that 21 types of tales were found. Among the 21 types of oral tales, 10 types of oral tales corresponded to Japanese folktales registered in Inada Kouji’s A type index of folktales in General Survey and Analysis of Japanese Folktales Vol.28 (Dohosha, 1988) (hereafter referred to as ‘IT’); -01 “Kongjwi-Patjwi” (IT 174 “Komehuku Awahuku”), 02 “Yeoni and Willow Bachelor” (IT 192 “Stepchild’s Finding Strawberry”), 06 “Girl With No Hands” (IT 178 “Maiden Without Hands”), 07A “Medicine Liver” (IT 180 “Taking Liver Out from Stepchild”), 08 “U- mong-nang-sang” (寓目囊箱) (IT 189 “ShunTokumaru” (俊德丸)), 14 “Making Stepchild Fall into a Well” (IT 182 “Stepchild’s Digging a Well”), 15 “Head of Fish” (IT 626 “Stepchild and Fish”), 17 “Friendly Sisters by Different Mothers” (IT 188 “Ogin gogin”ㆍIT 185 “Leave Stepchild”), 18 “Fried Hempseed” (IT 193 “Stepchild and Fried Beans”), 19 “Changing a Sleeping Place” (IT 187 “Replacing with a Doll”).
3. The corresponding folktales were compared with their composition of motifs and elements, and verified the similarity and differences as below.
In ten corresponding types, main motifs making up each story were matched in several cases, and the arrangement can roughly be considered as the same type. On the contrary, even in the same type of folktales, detailed composition elements showed distinct differences in aspects such as social position of the hero, a supporter, success and marriage (realization of happiness), and punishment of the stepmother.
The Korean tales generally consist of elements with strong Confucianism based on the society of the Yangban, the two upper classes of old Korea. Japanese tales consist of elements reflecting strong Buddhist beliefs based on that society. In the Korean type, sons or unmarried daughters of a Yangban family are the heroes or heroines, and there are many instances of help from the late mother to overcome difficulties caused by the cruel stepmother. In marriage, a hero or heroine marries a daughter or son of a Yangban family so that he or she recovers his or her social position and achieves happiness. Many heroes pass the state examination and gain fame, and also there are cases of a hero becoming successful through personal qualities. Also, strict punishment is inflicted on the evil stepmother. With these plots, Korean tales clarify ethics of encouraging good and punishing evil and show the values of perseverance, filial piety and human quality, justice, humanity, and the value of more than gaining fame.
In the Japanese type, a hero or heroine is usually a son or daughter of a rich family and has divine protection in overcoming difficulties. A hero or heroine marries a daughter or son of a rich family, and then he or she becomes happy by recovering his or her social position and acquiring wealth. A stepmother is transformed into a plant or animal, goes blind or becomes a beggar, or is punished with death. Japanese tales display remarkable ethics of retributive justice and show faith in the gods or Buddha. As in the Korean type, Japanese tales are based on the value of perseverance and show values of wishes for wealth and cleverness to succeed.
The reasons of having similarities in the same types of folktale from two countries, and differences in composition elements can be examined as below.
The reason why the same types of folktales can be shared in both countries is that they had direct contact with each other and imported similar types from abroad, respectively.
More cases were found in the latter, and China accounted for the most of any other foreign country. This was possible because both countries were in a position to accept advanced Chinese culture. “Girl with No Hands” and “Friendly Sisters by Different Mothers” were the results of exchange between Korea and Japan. In “Girl with No Hands”, Korea influenced Japan, and in “Friendly Sisters by Different Mothers”, Japan influenced Korea. Four types, “Kongjwi-Patjwi”(IT 174), “Head of Fish” (IT 626), “Fried Hempseed”(IT 193), and “Changing a Sleeping Place” (IT187), need more review to discover how the different countries influenced the tales. The first three types are similar to folktales found in China. There was a similar taste in Chinese classical literature “Changing a Sleeping Place”, so it cannot be ruled out in regard to the oral tradition of literature. Three tales, “U-mong-nang-sang (寓目囊箱)”(IT 189), “Medicine Liver”(IT 180) and “Making Stepchild Fall Into a Well”(IT 182), were imported from China. With regard to “Yeoni and Willow Bachelor”(IT 192), Korea received it from China and localized it, and Japan accepted it from Europe during the country’s modernization period and localized it.
Therefore the reason the two countries display differences in detail, not similarities in types, is that they placed relative importance on different cultural aspects at different times although they shared Confucian and Buddhist cultures. Different social structures, such as whether a state examination exists, changed the idea of pursuing happiness and moral consciousness against external violence. As Korea entered the period of Dynasty, Confucian culture was widespread in its society. On the other hand, in the Edo Period of Japan, traditional Buddhist culture ruled the spirit of the populace.
In addition to the prominence of Buddhism in the Japanese stepmother folktales, the “ShunTokumaru (俊德丸)” and “Taking Liver Out from Stepchild” types display splendid heroic action as a condition of marriage or affectionate emotion between man and woman. However, the Korean tale “Medicine Liver” shows confrontation between the upper and lower classes. While the Japanese valued natural human feelings, Koreans, due to Confucian culture, reflected a matured consciousness of criticism in the face of confrontation instead of revealing natural emotions.
4.The position of Korean and Japanese tales were diagnosed through reviewing similar types of tales in the East and the West, and the direction of further research was examined. The results are as follow.
It was already known that the stories of “Kongjwi-Patjwi” and “Girl With No Hands” were internationally distributed. In this study, the types of Yeoni and Willow Bachelor” and “Changing a Sleeping Place” were newly revealed as being handed down in the West.
“Friendly Sisters by Different Mothers” needs further review as to whether or not it was transmitted from China; however, all types except this were verified as being shared with China. Even with the exception of the Japanese “Yeoni and Willow Bachelor”, transmitted from Europe, East Asian countries have in distinctive commonality in folktales from the Confucian and Buddhist cultural areas compared to similarity to Western tales. It was assumed that the transmission route was mostly from China to Korea or Japan. Therefore, East Asian countries including Korea and Japan formed the area of stepmother folktales so that comparative research becomes an urgentissue.
As stated above, this comparative research classified Korean stepmother folktales and revealed the correspondence to Japanese tales. Also, it brought cultural similarities and differences into the fore by clarifying similarities and differences between the same types and explaining the reasons. In addition, this comparative study can be regarded as meaningful by proposing dire needs of expanding comparative researches through excavating abundant resources of surrounding countries, such as China, Mongolia, Taiwan and so on, and diagnosing the position of Korean and Japanese stepmother folktales in the East Asia.
