This study is aimed to analyze reading interventions in Korea for students with learning disability in order to explore the current practice of reading intervention for students with learning disability. In doing so, meta-analysis was conducted for the purpose of suggesting the way to promote more effective interventions.
Reading is an act to read a certain piece of writings. Therefore, it is an essential skill to understand and to learn in most subjects, and also a vital tool to acquire knowledge during school ages. However, it is shown that above 90% of students with LD have reading difficulty. Reading interventions help students to develop their reading abilities to an appropriate level. It especially shows positive effects on students with LD not only in reading the texts but also in performing academic tasks in school curriculum. From 1980s, various reading interventions have been performed to students with reading difficulties both in Korea and in other countries, and several studies have been implemented to examine how those reading interventions or reading instructional strategies have influence on students with LD.
Unfortunately, previous researches on such interventions do not present which interventions are effective to students with LD. Although results are different depending on diverse variables, it is not enough to explain which interventions make student enhance academic ability sufficiently, and in which aspects the interventions are effective.
Meta-analysis is a method that combines data from a number of studies. Thus, meta-analysis can be a useful tool to verify the effectiveness of the previous studies systemically. By using meta-analysis, it is possible to compare and analyze the findings of researches on diverse reading interventions, and synthesize the results of those studies. Unfortunately, in Korea, there are few studies which have conducted meta-analysis on reading interventions.
Therefore, this study investigated articles, which are published in Korean journals, on reading intervention for students with LD or reading difficulty from 2000 to June, 2009. To begin with, they are divided into four reading areas - word study, vocabulary, fluency, and reading comprehension.
The research questions are as follows:
(a) What features can be found in different characteristics and categories of reading interventions?
(b) What is the effect size of each study on reading interventions?
(c) What are the outcomes of meta-analysis on designs and components of each intervention?
A total of 45 intervention studies, which were related to word study, fluency, vocabulary, reading comprehension conducted during 10 years (2000 to 2009), were selected according to the criteria set in this study.
First, it categorized articles by following the certain criteria in order to investigate the research trends. Second, after coding the data, each effect size of both experimental and quasi-experimental design studies on reading intervention was calculated by Cohen’s d and single subject researches were calculated by Percentage of Nonoverlapping Data Point (PND). Lastly, 39 articles were selected for meta-analysis, and results were measured depending on various variables, such as design, intervention domain, strategies, and intervention components by using MIX (Meta-analysis with Interactive eXplanations) program.
Forty-five studies yielded 72 effect sizes across selected criteria. The results are as follows.
First, 27 studies out of 45 articles were about reading comprehension, at approximately 60%. Additionally, those studies had most sample numbers. Through this result, it is considered that interventions for reading comprehension have been conducted actively. Moreover, there were more studies, such as single group design or single subject design that have shown effectiveness without setting the experimental design. In detail, the majority of studies for grade 1~3years in elementary school were found in intervention subjects, whereas 1~4 group sizes were found in intervention groups. In case of the number of intervention per week the most studies implemented the interventions for 3~4 times, and in terms of sessions, the majority of studies did 20 sessions in total sessions. Finally, the average duration of each intervention performed was 30 min~1 hour. In addition, most studies were performed 3~4 times a week, during over 20 sessions in the total number of sessions, and lasted for 30min~1hours per session.
Second, each study was analyzed in terms of information contained on study design, strategy, intervention components (duration, intensity, and implementation personnel) and each effect size was calculated for providing characteristic and effectiveness of studies of reading intervention.
In word study, roughly 27% of studies took phonological awareness and PREP on reading skills. In addition, performers of interventions were researchers, and the intervention was conducted either in resource room during afterschool hour or in other places outside school. Effect sizes, showing the high improvements, were over Cohen’s’ d >1.
In fluency, the majority studies were conducted to students of third or more grades in elementary school, and it took more than 40 minutes in over 10 sessions in general class or resource room in school. All effect sizes were over .4 using Cohen’s d, which was above middle effect size.
In vocabulary, the majority of studies implemented above 30 minute in 15 sessions or more, and in most studies, and effect sizes were over 1 using Cohen’s d, which presents a large effect size.
In reading comprehension, studies which have implemented interventions over 3 sessions per week were occupied in reading interventions. And most studies were conducted over 10 sessions and 30 minutes in school. Also, group size was larger than other groups, and researchers or researcher-teachers implemented the intervention.
In single subject studies, word study was conducted the most among interventions, and effect sizes were above 80% resulting from PND.
Third, the result of the Q model-fit statistical test of heterogeneity was 108.48 (z = 7.33, p < .05), r = 0.40, and it turned out to be significant. Comparing the studies by research design, experimental study was more significant than pre-post study. In case of intervention domain, only Q of reading comprehension was significant (Q = 63.28*, z = 4.04, p < .05), and elaboration among reading strategies showed a significant result (r = ,41, z = 5.64, p < .05). Additionally, the number of sample from elaboration strategies was the largest.
Results from meta-analysis by intervention component showed the best effects in studies for 1~3 grades and over 15 of group size. Also, it was statistically significant when duration was within 30 minute and sessions were 10~20 times. In case of places for intervention, many interventions were implemented in resource room and it presented a large effect. However, people implementing study could not yield meta-analysis as well as calculate the effect size because the majority studies did not present them.
The study present integrated results through meta-analysis, but its result does not explain the absolute effects when it was considered that PND was larger than other studies. Therefore, intervention components must be carefully planned and implemented to address intervention effectiveness according to sample size and experimental design. Furthermore, more research should be implemented and conducted continuously in order to verify the effectiveness of reading interventions and construct evidence based on scientific results. In case of certain interventions, standard frame is especially required to analyze both single subject studies and experiment researches because studies designed single subject have positive effects to students with LD due to their academic characteristic. Also, effectiveness and validity of intervention must be addressed, based on integrated results.
In addition, studies could not acknowledge the process of enhancement because they did not present measure tools clearly and also they did not explain the length of time and the number of examination on implementation.
This study is the meta-analysis on reading interventions. Meta-analysis can conduct concrete analysis when applied conditions of intervention are presented clearly. However, most of previous intervention studies focused mainly on effectiveness describing research methods and academic improvement. Therefore, the result of this study can be used as validated information which teachers can apply to interventions according to the analysis of those researches in a clear and standardized frame. Furthermore, the effective programs and direction of curriculum contents can be made when it elaborates Korean trends on reading interventions in relation to international trend and widens the understanding of learning disabilities in more realistic dimension.
