Clay band-rim pottery, either round-clay band rim or triangular-clay band rim pottery, drew early attention as they were discovered together with diverse bronze wares such as slim bronze daggers.
The specific term, clay band-rim pottery, is used on the basis of the examination of relics and remains excavated from which clay band-rim pottery are excavated, in order to define the cultural pattern of that time. The space is limited to the central region, and since mainly round-band rim pottery are excavated from that region, they are examined. Regarding the objective and method of the study, since clay-band rim pottery culture develops fast in a short period of time, it is highly related to the native culture the overall pattern of round clay band-rim pottery culture in the central region is examined, and then, clay-band rim pottery culture, and clay band rim pottery culture + native culture in various regions are examined.
First, the clay band rim culture is likely to have developed in relatively highlands of hills, and this is considered to have been related to the pottery makers' livelihoods. Residences are characterized by square flat shapes, and internal bare ground located close to a wall. Bare ground, according to creation methods, is classified into a dug hole type (A type), a level land type (B type), and ground type (C type). In Gyeonggi-do, A type is discovered, while in Gangwon-do, A type is not discovered, but B type has formed the largest portion. For the tomb system, there are stone mound tomb with wooden chamber, pit stone-round tomb, and pit tomb with wooden chamber. Of these, the stone mound tomb with wooden chamber, where there are stone structures at the top, accommodated slim bronze daggers, other weapons, and ceremonial wares. The pit tomb with wooden chamber was used for the longest period of time during the clay band rim pottery culture period, and given that although excavated therefrom are sets of clay band rim pottery and long-necked black jars, some slim bronze daggers are unearthed, influential figures were buried there. For the examination of relics, pottery were classified into clay band rim pottery, long-necked black jars, and jars with handle, and stone wares were classified into stone arrowheads and stone axes. As a result, the cross section shape of clay band rim pottery changed from Ⅰ to Ⅳ; the cross section shape changed from rectangular or oval-shaped broad clay band to round inversion with the inner side curving sharply at the inflection, and the trunk part is roughly located at lower part, and becomes slender. In the case of the long-necked black jar, the trunk part is the most effective part, the neck is upright but slightly inversed; the trunk part changes from the swollen type Ⅰ to type Ⅳ where the inversion degree of the neck increases with the neck becoming short, and where the largest diameter is located at the lower part of the body. For arrowheads, triangular flat arrowheads are the major ones of the time, and stone axes are discovered in Gangwon-do in the largest numbers, and they are highly likely to have flowed from the present-day North Korea region.
The relation between the native culture and the clay band culture is confirmed in the Yeoksam-dong and Heunam-ri type for the Seoul and Gyeonggi-do region, in the Songguk-ri type for Chungcheong-do, and in the Yeoksam-dong and Heunam-ri type or the Bukhan River type for Gangwon-do. In the Seoul and Gyeonggi-do region, from (slender) rectangular residences, clay band rim pottery are excavated with larger numbers of nativel relics being excavated, or from rectangular residences with central two-pillar, clay band rim pottery are discovered as major relics. In Chungcheong-do, from round Songguk-ri type residences, clay band rim pottery are excavated in many cases with the high ratio of native relics. In Gangwon-do, from native residences with central two-pillar or internal clay compacted facilities, relics accompanied by clay band rim pottery are excavated in certain cases.
The round clay band rim pottery culture patterns can be classified into Ⅰ~Ⅲ periods on the basis of changes in excavated relics. During the Ⅰ period, when the round clay band culture was brought to the middle region, residential relics are confirmed, and this period spans the end of the 4th century BC to the first half of the 3rd century BC, but it may further date back in consideration of the relation with the native culture. The clay band rim pottery and the long-necked black jar fall into type Ⅰ. During the Ⅱ period, relatively large-scale residential relics appear, shifting from small-scale residences, and the number of tomb relics such as stone mound tombs with stone chamber and pit tomb with wooden chamber increases; thus this period spans the first half of the 3rd century BC to the second half of the 3rd century BC. The Ⅱ period, during which the types of excavated relics change owing to the long-time creation of villages, can be segmented into the Ⅱ-1 period from the first half of the 3rd century BC to the mid-3rd century BC, and the Ⅱ-2 period from the mid-3rd century BC to the second half of the 3rd century BC. The Ⅱ-1 period falls into the type classification Ⅱ for clay band rim pottery and long-necked black jars, and the Ⅱ-2 period falls into the type classification Ⅲ for clay band rim pottery and long-necked black jars. During the Ⅲ period, the most distinctive change appears in pottery, and the pit tomb with wooden chamber is discovered as a major tomb type, and this period is considered to span the second half of the 3rd century BC to the first half of the 2nd century BC. Clay band rim pottery and long-necked black jars fall into the type classification Ⅳ.
The time when the clay band rim pottery culture flowed into the Korean Peninsula, in consideration of the relations with the surroundings, is likely to be 5th century BC or earlier, but for the middle region, at the end of the 4th century BC, as emigrants flowed into the region from northeastern China, the full swing influx of the clay band rim pottery culture is considered to have occurred. The presumed influx paths include both land and sea routes, as mentioned before, provided that the influx via land routes occurred mainly in Gyeonggi-do and Gangwon-do, while the influx via sea routes occurred in Chungcheong-do.
