Every folk arts of the nation in the world has an outstanding characteristics and disciplines could be distinguished from other’s. Similar to this, Mongolian folk dance is an art form that generally refers to movement of the natural Mongolian people, used as form of their inner spiritual expression, social interaction or presented in a performance related with family trained school settings. This experience has reached to current situations with a very interesting, long and complicated history coexisted in human society.
By having nomadic life styles, Mongolians has written and left many historical books and other literatures as they accurately preserved their own culture and arts. "Secret History of Mongolia" written in about 1228-1241, tells us a real and true history about consumption of Mongolian dance which had certainly been an important part of ceremony, rituals, celebrations and entertainment, great feasts and wedding occasions.
There were foreign scholars who denied national features of Mongolian folk arts. They have considered that "Mongolian national arts is a copy of agricultured nation’s culture", "Nomads nave no culture, they do not have any ability to create their own culture", "They were away from the culture way of the mankind; they are still wild nomads." From the facts in our historical and cultural monuments above definitions are not true and have no roots. For this view, I want to emphasize the historical true facts here. After the conquer China, Khubilai Khaan of Yuani Dynasty moved the capital city to nowadays Bejing and created there outstanding historical and cultural monuments as well as national instrumental orchestra-over 300 musicians were involved-for such events as Khaan’s palace rituals and wedding feasts. At that time the dance and music could obtain their ultimate success of the development process. Why those thought what we have no own culture is probably coherent with that Khubilai Khaan moved the capital city to other’s cultural property. But here Mongols took their aboriginal culture and its behaviors, of course. They did not borrow any. According to cultural regularity there was acculturation process between two nation’s culture and Chinese culture just absorbed Mongolian’s whose nation was a dominant at that time. When the last Khaan of Yuani Dynasty, Togoontumur was expelled from Min Dynasty he left every distinctive culture and its elements, behaviors. From this state other foreign scholars happen to incorrectly think that Mongolian culture is the other’s culture.
One of the evolved styles in Mongolian folk dances is ethnic dances which refer to such elements as life-style, mental features, geography, religious and cultural expressions. Especially, today these issues are crucial in globalization. To study Mongolian ethnic dances, firstly, it is claimed to discover their proper nature in a certain dance, secondly, to do a comparative research between Mongolian and other nation’s dances, for example Korean’s. However, they vary from each other with their symbolic meanings. Here I would like to have some examples in Bii Bielgee, one of the ethnic dances in Western Mongolia, was registered in the World Intangible Cultural Heritage. It is the special ethnic dance with its own dancing manners, techniques and disciplines. In Mongolia there are 21 ethnic groups and each of them has 3-7 own Bii bieleg which are not like other nation’s dances.
Bii bieleg refers to movement of the body of West Mongolians’ regarded in a gestural vocabulary as in many Asian dances. It usually rhythmic and to music of morin khuur (horse-headed fiddle) and tovshuur (West Mongolian two-stringed plucked lute). Mongolians are very essential with horses. Every gait of a horse is reflected in Bii bieleg. One of the most interesting thing in Bii bieleg behavior is if the audience want to see bii bieleg dancer’s dancing skills they used to put the big cup with milk, mare milk or vodka in it, on his head, knee or hands and let him dance without any pour. There is also a Bii bieleg derived from individuals’ behaviors. For example, if someone invited to a family’s feast in a silk deel (Mongol gown) and finely danced there is called as a Khuren Torguud (one of the ethnic group in West Mongolia), someone danced in a big deel is called as Yelkundug, someone danced with womanizing character is called as a Seden Youth etc.
We must say that Bii bieleg is the only one for its pure survivals during centuries. Following facts can affirm it. Mongolia was under the Manchu oppression for 200 years, dependent of China for 12 years, under the socialist dictatorship for 70 years. However, our ancestor could pass on and transmit their cultural traditions, for instance, Bii bieleg to the next generations. Below I have tried to list the reason.
1. Mongol Bii bieleg has been disseminated in local patterns because it is trained by family schools.
2. Geography of Mongolia was a big influence for Bii bieleg and its survivals. Enculturation from Manchu, China and Soviet Union into local areas was not very effectively.
3. Mongolians could protect their culture and arts including folk dances.
4. In the beginning of the socialist period there was a persecution which a lot of talented people were arrested. In middle time, classical arts had been rapidly developed. Together with this, the reputation of folk arts was going down. But since 1980, by organizing All people’s aboriginal arts festival there were start point activities to support this field.
Last point what I want to mention is shaman movements. With doubt, I think when the soul from the sky comes to the male or female shaman’s body he or she begins to recite the pray and moves or dances. My doubt is for male or female shaman dances or alive body of the soul dances? It is a very researchable subject for those who study Mongolian shamanism or aboriginal arts.
