Today’s global village has long coexisted different socio-cultures in a great society. In the case of South Korea, it is not exception. And, the recent years have seen the rapidly-changing ‘multi-cultural’ and ‘multi-racial’ aspects of the Korean society. Thus, it does not make sense any longer to accept conventional and rigid ethnical racialism, such as ‘single-race nationalism’ or ‘purebred nationalism’. Especially considering that a mushrooming number of Korean men have married foreign women, higher social concerns are given about the foreign women and their kids, who immigrated to Korea and were born under such foreign women.
At this juncture, we need to show much attention to such foreign immigrant women and their kids. It is natural that ‘foreign women who married Korean men and immigrated to Korea’ feel very confused and embarrassed about socio-cultural and life environments, circumstances, patterns and the likes entirely new and different from what they experienced and faced in their homelands. On top of this, most foreign immigrant women might not become accustomed to Korean culture.
Born and raised under family environments different from ones in Korea, their kids would have a great sense of confusion about ‘self-identity’, and in comparison to their Korean peer students. Given the bitter reality, it is urgent that ‘foreign immigrant women’ should receive a great deal of education on ‘Korean Culture’ rather than education on ‘Korean language’. And, it is a pressing task that their kids should receive training to develop and establish their self-identity.
But, one of the most serious socio-cultural problems and conflicts that ‘married foreign immigrant women’ suffer from can be found in their family relations. This has already been proved true in the research study that this researcher made. Most of all, ‘family conflicts or confrontations’ are caused by their strong sense of alienation from ‘different’ or ‘exotic’ status that they feel in relations with their Korean husbands.
Their sense of alienation affects children, who were born and raised under the influence of families of multi-socio-cultures. But, such children have to experience new and unfamiliar school environments, when they under the influence are old enough to go to elementary schools. At that moment, it is unavoidable that ‘married foreign immigrant women’ have to bear their double burdens and suffering in the process of overcoming the sharp difference between the Korean socio-culture and their motherlands’ one. Their kids can become very embarrassed in that they have physical appearances different from any other Korean school peers. Hence, we should take seriously about difficulties they have, judging that ‘married foreign immigrant women’ and their kids under the influence of families of multiple socio-cultures form and live with their families, forever, and that these families have something close to do with the Korean future.
Therefore, we should not regard those immigrants and their kids as foreigners different from us. In this respect, taking more ultimate measures needs to make foreign immigrant women and their kids get over the unfamiliar Korean society better than the past. As an illustration, curriculum on the understandings of Korean culture can be cited as one of the fundamental solution.
Against this backdrop, this research thesis selected ‘married foreign immigrant women’ and their kids, as the research subjects of education on Korean culture, and then conducted a survey of those people in order to study the main culprit, which prevents them from forming favorable family relations, school life and social activities. The analytic research results showed that ‘emotional dissonance’ arising from different socio- cultural environments has become the main culprit. Based on these results, this thesis made an analysis of <Korean traditional literary works, especially, Korean classical tales>-focused Korean culture education, as part of bid to understand in-depth Korean culture and tackle with confrontations or conflicts.
To make this research and study, this thesis employed the data of a tale dubbed as <ImulGyogu>.
The tale, <ImulGyogu>, covers a story on ‘the presence of a human being, who becomes intricately linked with other object’.
Here, ‘other object’ implies some sacred super-ego. This is the one that this researcher wants to note.
This research thesis selected the tale genre under the title of <ImulGyogu> and presented theoretical frameworks on ‘ humanitarian-based’ culture’ grounded on the Korean typical ‘Contemplation’ system, in the first course of finding out how Korean culture education will head for. This was intended to help ‘foreign immigrant women’ of multiple socio-cultural families minimize their conflicts or confrontations faced in the most basic interpersonal relations, and become accustomed to Korean culture.
As another tale or text related to <ImulGyogu> and useful for Korean culture education targeting foreign immigrant women, this thesis adopted < A wood Cutter and A Fairy> to make foreign immigrant women establish their own self-identity and receive the better education on Korean culture, on a basis of lessons on the tale that they get.
Also, this research thesis encouraged their kids to perform ‘educational play’, with the aid of other tale of <ImulGyogu>, titled <Story on Heroic Army General Gam-chan Gang: An Prominent Army General who fought against Gyoran opponent troops to intrude Gyreo Administrative Court in the Korean medieval age. This was designed to create a good atmosphere for their kids to have a positive way of thinking and psychological equilibrium essential for establishing their self-identity.
In other words, the main purpose of this research thesis was to minimize and cure ‘negative’ emotion that they have, so that they can maintain psychologically stable state and develop their self-identity.
In details, this research thesis applied ‘literary therapeutic techniques’ to foreign immigrant women in an attempt to treat their unstable state in psychological terms, while, this thesis introduced the interest and dynamic activity-centered ‘educational play technique’ for their kids at the stage of cognitively immature growth, namely, at the stage of cognitive dissonance, and then motivated those kids to put such technique into practical use. But strictly speaking, ‘educational play technique’ puts the focal point on treating psychological disorders that kids under the influence of families of multiple socio- cultures have. Thus, this technique can be referred to as one of ‘literary’ therapeutic techniques.
In this vein, this research thesis selected ‘foreign immigrant women’ and their kids as the research subjects and put forward the literary therapeutic models to establish self-identity and ‘inner self-reflection’. But, it is counseled that the more specific and different researches must be steadily made on the upcoming education on the Korean culture.
