성인여성의 발 유형분류와 연령대별 발 특성분석 : Size Korea의 3차원 발 데이터 중심으로 = Classification of adult women's foot shape and their morphological characteristics by age : by using 3D foot data of Size Korea
The purposes of this study were to categorize the foot shape of Korean adult women at age ranging from their 20s to 50s based on morphological characteristics, and to investigate the characteristics of major types of foot and for different age groups.
For the purposes, 40 items of 3D foot data available from Size Korea, the 5th Korean body dimension survey project. The data used for the present study were extracted from the 1314 adult Korean women at age from 20 to 59. The data were processed by factor analysis, chi-square analysis, cluster analysis, analysis of variance(ANOVA), Duncan's multiple range test and cross-tabulation analysis by using SPSS ver. 14.0 .
The results were as follows:
Out of 40 measurement items, 24 items were used for categorizing foot and 6 factors were formulated: ankle form, morphology from foot center to ankle, lateral malleolar height, anterior foot height, medial malleolar form, and arch and heel height. Based on the factor scores of the 6 factors, 3 types of foot were found: 'high arched Foot’(with maximum height of instep and metatarsal height) and 'voluminous foot’(with high metatarsus and long circumference of instep) and average Foot’(with moderate metatarsal height and moderate metatarsus and dorsal circumference).
To classify shapes of sole of Korean adult women, a factor analysis was performed by using 17 items of the foot data. As a result, 4 factors were found: foot length, medial foot morphology, metatarsal and lateral foot morphology, and metatarsal gradient. Based on the factor scores of the 4 factors, 4 type of sole were found: type I (a type of foot with narrow soles due to shortest foot width and metatarsal length),‘Type W’(a type of foot with wide soles due to maximum toe length and large foot width and metatarsal length),‘Type A’(a type of feet with soles adjacent to internally clustered toes) and‘Type H’(a type of foot with moderate foot width and metatarsal width, plus straight soles adjacent to little deformed toes).
In terms of the differences among the types of foot, the older they were, the longer length of heel and ankle, wider breadth of feet, longer metatarsal length, wider breadth of heel, wider breadth of ankle, longer circumference of heel and ankle, longer horizontal circumference of ankle, longer inframalleolar circumference, higher lateral angle of great toe, and higher lateral angle of little toe. It was also found that adult women in their 20s showed relatively short metatarsal and dorsal circumference, as did contrary to adult women in their 30s, 40s and 50s: The metatarsal and dorsal circumference developed from the age of 30s onward. Particularly, adult women in their 40s and 50s showed relatively long inframalleolar circumference. That is, the older showed the thicker foot circumference.
In terms of the differences in foot dimension among different age groups, the older they were, the wider metatarsal breadth, the wider breadth of heel and the thicker morphological development of ankle. It was found that adult women in their 40s and 50s showed greater height of toe, lateral malleolus, pternion and metatarsus. Accordingly, it is required that shoes for middle-age or older adult women should be carefully designed with regard to anterior height of shoes as well as height between central and posterior region of shoes.
With regard to differences in the morphological factors of foot, significant differences were found in 5 factors such as ankle form, morphology from foot center to ankle, lateral malleolar height, medial malleolar form, and arch and heel height except anterior foot height among different age groups. Lateral malleolar height and medial malleolar form also showed significant differences among different age groups. Those in their 20s and 30s had greater lateral malleolar height and better medial malleolar form than those in their 40s and 50s. Moreover, there were significant differences in all the morphological factors of sole among the age groups.
Regarding the age distribution of different foot morphology types, the older they were, the lower percentage of average foot type, and the percentage of voluminous foot increased rapidly from 30s onward. Average foot and high arched foot were the major types of adult women's foot in their 20s and 30s, whereas voluminous foot were the major types of adult women's foot in their 40s and 50s.
With regard to the age distribution of different foot morphology types, adult women in their 30s tended to fall into the category of Type W more than those in the 20s, and the former group showed higher percentage of Type A characterized by broad foot and serious deformation of toes, but showed lower percentage of Type I characterized by narrow foot. Those in their 40s had a tendency toward the higher percentage of Type A than those in their 30s, while women in their 50s showed a tendency toward the higher percentage of Type A and W than those in their 40s. It was found that the older women had the wider breadth of foot, the more deformed toes and the more internally clustered form. Thus, it is expected that careful consideration of such variations in foot morphology before design works for shoes will effectively reduce potential causes of foot deformation.
According to analysis on the percentage of every combination of foot types and sole types in all age groups, it was found that voluminous foot / Type W emerged at highest ratio among others, which was followed by average foot/ Type I, average feet / Type W, average foot / Type A, and high arched foot / Type I respectively.
According to analysis on the age distribution in the percentage of every combination of foot types and sole types, it was found that average foot / Type I and average foot / Type W were representative of adult women's foot in their 20s and 30s, while voluminous foot / Type W, voluminous foot / Type A and average foot / Type A were representative of adult women's foot in their 40s and 50s. This finding suggests that the older age from 30s onward (to 40s and 50s) has a tendency toward wider breadth of feet, more voluminous form of instep and the more deformation of toes.
It is expected that the results of morphological categorization and characteristics of adult women's foot in this study will be able to contribute to develop better shoe fit for different age groups of adult women and to provide reference materials for marketing in ever-activated shoemaking industry as well as for future research in categorization of women’s foot.
