The present dissertation originates from the observation that in Modern Korean Novels the main hero of the story of "leaving home", is in fact not a hero, but a heroine. Thus the basic aim of this paper is to explicate why the motif of leaving home employs women as its heroines and thereby reveal the implications of this literary phenomenon. In order to do this, we will examine how the stories of women leaving home are narrated, and how women are represented in these stories during the colonial times of 1910s, the 1920s and the 1930s.
The fact that in Modern Korean Literature not men but women appear as main characters in the typically novelistic theme of "leaving home" is indeed extraordinary. It is all the more so in the light of Joseon's long history of Confucianism that prescribed as the basic ethics for Husband and Wife that "Men be outdoors, women indoors, men not go in, and women not go out." Furthermore, women appear as the heroines of these stories of "leaving home," not only in the novels written by female writers, but also in the novels written by male writers. Based on such observations, the present thesis aims to define the distinctiveness of Modern Korean Novels by revealing why the motif of "leaving home" is materialized through the mediation of female characters.
The fact that various male writers repeatedly narrate the story of women leaving home shows that this motif is at the core of the imagination of those times. The basis of this imagination is the feeling of loss, rooted in the experience of losing one's country and being degraded to the second citizen of a colony. A woman's leaving home is, to the male writer or to his male character, experienced not as escape, but as her disappearance from home, and thus has the semblance of an experience of loss. Therefore the fact that the male writers during the colonial times repeatedly tell the story of women leaving home can be read as the literary expression of this feeling of loss, commonly felt by the colonized people of those times.
The specific way in which a story of a woman leaving her home is narrated, differ from era to era, because the literary projection of the experience of loss can vary from author the author, and from era to era. It can appear in the form of replacing what is lost with something new; or it can appear in the form of aggravating the loss by exerting violence to oneself and others; or it can appear in the form of displaying one's desire to transcend or escape from such experience. As a result, the destinies of women who leave their homes also differ from era to era, depending on the imagination of the author and his times. The women may return home unscathed, and untouched by death; or they may have to suffer the consequences of leaving home by dying or becoming fallen women; or they may become femmes fatales who fatally seduce male characters to death.
However, the spirit and imagination of Modern Korean Literature during colonial times was not fixated solely on the experience of loss. The stronger the feeling of loss is, the stronger the desire for escape from the absurdities of the times becomes; and the urge to express not only the feeling of loss but also the desire for escape, increases. The reason why it is important to analyse the story of women leaving home, portrayed in the works of male writers, is because it is these works that satisfy both desires ― the desire to express loss, and the desire to escape. From a male writer's point of view, the story of a woman leaving home is intrinsically related to the experience of loss, but from the female character's point of view, leaving home is undeniably an experience of escape. The correlation of a male writer and his female character is what produces this double-sidedness, or complexity. The stories of women leaving their homes, repeatedly told in the narratives of male writers of colonial times are important because they allow the writers to express both the feeling of loss and the desire for escape through these stories.
The male writers are thus able to acquire the ability to express both the feelings of loss and the desire for escape through the representation of women leaving home. However the correlationship between the male writer and his female character, unravels a more complex drama. The male writers of the New Novel(Sin so seol) summon female characters into the narrative space of the novel, in the service of their intentions and needs. However, the female characters refuse to become simple marionettes for the male writers. The forms in which the female characters are represented changes ― from a signifier to an image, and from a metaphor to an allegory. In such process of change, 'the representation of women' gains its own voice and body, and in the end makes its appearance as 'the-other-as-subject' who has desires of her own. The male writer, in turn, also achieves subjectification, evolving from 'the subject of language' to 'the subject of vision', and finally to 'the subject of action.' The present dissertation analyses the characteristic ways in which the narratives of 'women leaving home' are constructed, what kind of destinies the female characters meet, and also the ways in which the female characters are represented.
In the New Novels of the 1900s and the 1910s, even though women often confront life-threatening dangers once outside the safety of their homes, in the end, they always make their way back home, unscathed. This typical narrative structure of the New Novel can be named thus: the narrative of 'departure and return.' At the heart of such narrative is a female character who is driven out of her home and then summoned back, according to the plans and intentions of her male writer. Such female character of the New Novel can be said to be represented as a 'signifier' that has gone into circulation in the Symbolic order, or a 'letter' that always arrives at its destination. The second chapter of the present dissertation examines the reason why women are represented as signifiers in these narratives of 'departure and return,' by analyzing Yi In-jik and his New Novel, The Tears of Blood(Hyeol ui Nu). In the process, we have found that the narratives of the New Novel have been composed by intellectuals of the enlightenment party, as a counter-discourse to that of conservative loyalists. Through such discursive confrontation, the writers of the New Novel were able to subjectify themselves as 'subjects of language.'
In the 1920s, the way in which women are represented in literature fundamentally changes. It was in the 1920s that women start to become socially visible, and thus the basic form in which they are represented also changes from the 'signifier' to the visual 'image'. These women, who have escaped from the confines of their homes were seen by men as idealized mirror-images of themselves, in that they shared the common experience of having broken away from the long upheld Confucius ethics of feudal Joseon, Therefore, what is predestined for these women who leave their homes, also changes dramatically. Unlike the New Novels that portray women as always returning home safely, the novels of the 1920s depict women as dying after leaving home. This seems to result from the fact that women as mirror-images of men were not only objects of love, but also objects of fear. As objects of love, women become the first heroines of romantic love; as objects of fear, they become the tragic heroines of early death. Chapter three analyses the works of Yi Kwang-su and Kim Dong-in in this light.
Many narratives appear, especially in the early 1920s, that end with the death of its heroine, but they decrease in number towards the later half of the decade. The reason behind such change seems to be in the fact that the fear unleashed by the incomprehensible image of women, found definition and was thereby attenuated when these women who left their homes were given a name. And that name was, of course, none other than Nora. Nora becomes a popular female icon after Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House is introduced in translation to Joseon society in 1921. The incomprehensible image of women outside their homes is given the name Nora, and through this metaphor, the incomprehensible image of woman is given a concrete meaning. The image of women outside their homes is no longer fearsome, because now, she is just another "fallen Nora." Although women could not entirely escape from ill fortune, in that they still had to suffer the social death of being branded as 'fallen,' women outside their homes were able to avoid the tragic destiny of death through this metaphor. And ironically enough, through such moral fall, female representation was able to gain a voice and a body of one's own. Chapter four explicates such change by analyzing the works of Yeom Sang-seob and Chae Man-sik.
It is in the novels of the 1930s that women become fully exempt from being predestined to moral fall or death for leaving their homes. Especially in the novels of Yi Sang, women are no longer portrayed as being the object of early death, but rather as being beyond it, appearing as femmes fatales who in reverse, seduce men to death. Women in Yi Sang's works are portrayed as being beyond the male writer's or character's control, appearing as the other of the Real. Thus Yi Sang's female characters can be said to be allegorical representations. Yi Sang portrays women as liberally and routinely going out of the house, and in contrast, men as being incarcerated in the confines of a small room or an enclosed city space. These men have to learn anew, how to escape from the confinement of the incarcerated space and time of the colonized people, by imitating the female characters. Women as allegories introduce externality into the narrative, thereby opening up a passageway through which one can escape. Chapter five analyses such narrative of 'confinement and escape' in Yi Sang's literature.
The subversive imagination of 'women leaving home' can be said to be the result of the colonial situation. Male writers, through the representation of women, were able to find expression for their feelings of loss, resulting from the experience of losing national independence and falling into a colony. Also through these female characters, male writers were able to narrate the story of escape that have then been blocked for male characters. Female representation also, by being linked to the motif of leaving home, was able to step out of its passivity of being represented and gains powers of its own. The combination of male writer and female representation, in narrating the motif of leaving home, unfolds a drama of subject and the other, that allows Modern Korean Literature to earn a special place in its history.
