初期佛敎 阿羅漢의 利他性 硏究 = A study on the altruism of arahant in the early buddhism
This Thesis is researches on the altruism of arahant in the early Buddhism. Arahant in the early buddhism means a person who reaches complete human, and nirvana stage that arahant achieved is regarded the same as Tathagata and sammasambuddha. The first arahant in buddhism appears Gotama Buddha. According to records, arahant in the world has become six when Gotama Buddha preached Buddhism teachings to five bhikshus in Sarnath and they achieved nirvana, and one of them was Gotama Buddha. The only difference between Gotama Buddha and arahant is that Gotama Buddha who have pioneered the way whereas arahant who follow the way and reached the same destination.
Gotama Buddha preached that whoever can achieve nirvana through self-endeavor, and arahant proved Buddha's teaching is not wrong as practicing. In addition, arahant realized mercy as altruistic practice and lived a precious life in order for everyone's benefits and happiness, and he became an objective of veneration as a ideal human in the early buddhism.
However, after entering into Early Buddhist schools, Gotama Buddha and arahant are evidently distinguished. Memorial and respectful mind for Gotama Buddha deified Gotama Buddha as a transcendental mysterious being while the mind believed that arahant is qualitatively different from Gotama Buddha. As a result of these thoughts, negative perspectives about arahant generated. Also arahant's qualification as an ideal human was denied through retrogression theory and the five points of Mahadeva. In addition, Samgha, paying attention to studying of an academic dogma and practice life, neglected practical perspectives such as saving the world and reforming people as well as had seclusive and not altruistic natures. In particular, ‘nirvana without remainder’ thought which believes complete nirvana can be possible after the five aggregates destroyed denied ‘nirvana here and now’ of arahant. In other words, living in nirvana, and the five aggregates were not destroyed because of incomplete, arahants of the five aggregates, being completely destroyed after the passing into nirvana is described as a complete nirvana. On the other hand, those who achieve nirvana will stay transcendental world disconnected from the world.
Mahayana Buddhism which is newly derived from these backgrounds, previously mentioned, criticized Early Buddhist schools doctrines interpretations. In particular, Mahayana Buddhism was criticized ‘nirvana without remainder’ thought by the nihilistic view of annihilation arguing body and even wisdom are dissipated. In addition, Mahayana Buddhism disparages supramundane theory that explained nirvana is unconditioned as selfish practitioners who only try to pursue their liberty and solely enjoy nirvana's quiescence at transcendental world disconnected from the world.
For this reason, nirvana theory explaining by Early Buddhist schools does not bodily succeed arahant high spirit that the early buddhism demonstrated. The early Buddhism did not unfold completeness and incompleteness on the basis of the five aggregates existence, and denied insistences that they will be dissipated after arahant's passing into nirvana. Furthermore, supramundane explained by the early Buddhism is not physical concept but only considered as saint's enlightenment situation.
In spite of a historical fact, universe recognition in Northeast Asia Buddhism regarding arahant appears that arahant is an unsocial practitioner who is very selfish, and lack of altruism. For this reason, reestablishing arahant's status as an ideal human of the early buddhism and restoring ‘self-benefit’ and to ‘benefit others’ spirit are significantly meaningful.
Therefore, the purpose of this article is to shed light on arahant's altruism in the early buddhism systematically as doctrinal foundation and practical perspectives. Arahant in the early Buddhism is not a selfish and unsocial saint, but a perfect altruistic human not only who achieved the completion of self-benefit, having both ignorance's extinction and wisdom, but who returned warmhearted mercy spirit to society. In addition, Mahayana Buddhism's Bodhisattva ideal does not appear through disconnecting arahant spirit of the early Buddhism, while the ideal has continual relationship that succeed the spirit of ‘self-benefit and to benefit others’ through Bodhisattva ideal. In particular, arahant is not mysterious and transcendental existence, but a human who shows anyone can achieve nirvana by self-endeavor. It could be possible to achieve ultimate Buddhism goals (i.e., completion of life, completion of human that overcame pain) in the real world, and these stories could convey positive and hopeful messages to us.
