Kim Gwang-guk (金光國, 1727-1797), a Korean court medical official in the Joseon period (1392-1910), demonstrated self-awareness as a man of letters by compiling the paintings he had collected into a multi-volume album that he named Seongnong Hwawon (石農畵苑), a title bearing his own pen name.
The older and contemporary Joseon paintings collected by Kim and compiled in the album Seongnong Hwawon, together with his commentaries about them, are testimony to the outstanding artistic world of 18th century Korea and the country's thriving literati culture. By showing contemporary artists works from China, Japan and Europe, Kim also promoted the creation of new artworks in Korea. His art collecting activities reveal a hidden cultural side of Joseon, a caste-based society, and shed new light on the art world at the time. They can be regarded as a symbolic cultural manifestation of the circumstances of Joseon, linked indirectly at the time to the global currents of commercial capitalism that formed in East Asia in the 17th to 19th centuries. In order to demonstrate this, this paper begins by examining the relationship between the art world and the adoption of literati tastes, which led the development of literati paintings in early-modern East Asia, by Chinese merchants. It then attempts to determine the relatively modern character of the Seongnong Hwawon, for its time, by comparing the Chinese system to that of Korea. The three main chapters, other than the introduction and conclusion, are composed as follows.
Chapter II contains a discussion of controversies surrounding research into patronage of art in East Asia, its different forms, and Kim Gwang-guk's relationship to the early-modern East Asian art world. In this region, in which literati paintings and "real landscape" (實景) paintings developed, the simultaneous emergence of merchant collectors and rise of "literati tastes" is noteworthy in previous studies of art patronage that have investigated the contribution of the growth of commercial society and the merchant class to art. Kim Gwang-guk's form of collecting can be classified as private patronage, one of the three main categories of art patronage in East Asia at the time (the others being court and religious). Kim was involved in the medicinal ingredients trade with China, making him comparable to Chinese and Japanese merchant collectors. Most of the works in Seongnong Hwawon, which include landscape and figure painting genres such as imitation of old styles, literature, "real landscape"(depicting places that actually exist), four seasons, scenes from old tales, Taoist and Buddhist characters, scenes depicting customs, and beautiful women; and plant and animal themes such as the Four Gentlemen (plum, orchid, chrysanthemum and bamboo), flowers, and birds and mammals, were acquired on the late-Joseon art market. The Chinese, Japanese and European works confirm the relationship with a commercial community that had expanded beyond state and regional boundaries while informing us of the complex literati tastes of their collector.
Chapter III investigates the patronage of painters by merchant collectors in the 17th and 18th century China. Collection by merchants of works of Jiangnan painters in the late Ming and Qing dynasties accompanied a growing literati preference for the Wu and Songjiang schools and differentiation of taste. This chapter highlights the way such patronage stimulated the development of individual literati painting styles in painters from Dong Qichang to Shitao. The merchants of Huizhou, in particular, had been pursuing profit by dealing in antique paintings, printing and publishing, and manufacturing luxury items, thereby commercializing the pastimes and erudition of scholar officials, since the Northern Song dynasty, in addition to their salt manufacturing and high-interest moneylending businesses. This led to the circulation of ancient paintings with legendary reputations and produced woodblock-printed texts such as Bazhong Huapu ("Eight Kinds of Painting"), Shizhuzhai Huapu ("Ten Bamboo Studio Catalogue"), Taiping Shanshui Tu ("Landscapes of Taiping Prefecture") and Jieziyuan Huazhuan ("Manual of the Mustard Seed Garden"). These contributed to the popularity of literati paintings in East Asia and were groundbreaking products that combined the capital of merchants with the skills of artists (stylistic imitation, forgery, rough sketching and carving). These changes occurred simultaneously with the emergence of merchant collectors who supported Dong Qichang, the Huangshan School and Shitao; they represent the growth of merchants, who came to acquire wealth and knowledge equal to those of the Chinese gentry at the time. The fact that Dong Qichang's novel works were generally connected to the collections of Xiang Yuanbian and Wu Ting tells us about the role of merchant collectors in contributing to the development of works in the style of old masters (倣作), works creatively copied from other works that imitated the styles of earlier masters (twofold imitation, 二重倣作) and works that combined the styles of one or more different masters (合法). Huizhou merchants in the 17th and 18th centuries contributed to the emergence of Mt. Huang landscapes as a theme of literati paintings, the creation of works that combined the styles of Ni Zan and Huang Gongwang (倪黃合法), and the exclusion of paintings of beautiful women from the realm of literati tastes. The Xinan branch of the Wu clan, to which Wu Ting belonged, laid the basis for Hongren and Shitao's original works; the results of these were transmitted by Ma Yueguan and Ma Yuelu of Yangzhou to the Yangzhou School.
Chapter IV examines the Korean situation in comparison to that of China. It takes note of the role played by middle class individuals such as Kim Gwang-guk in the late-Joseon art world, in which both aristocratic and middle-class collectors were active. The art market, which encompassed spaces of distribution and sale, networks of patrons and demand from random customers, saw the mass production of Yuan, Ming and Qing-style literati paintings. Middle class collectors acquiring ancient and modern Joseon paintings contributed to the flourishing of the 18th century art world and possessed paintings on a variety of themes including imitation of old styles, literature and landscapes. The fact that the landscape paintings they did own depicted scenic spots or properties that they neither owned nor had any experience of, and the fact that they were in most cases content to own pictures of gatherings (雅集圖), shows their relatively low social status and lack of power in comparison to Chinese gentry and merchants and Joseon gentry, the principle source of demand for real landscape paintings in the 17th and 18th centuries, who were able to commission paintings depicting scenic spots, their own properties and gatherings. Nevertheless, the love of culture on the part of middle-class Joseon citizens, as buyers and owners of commercialized landscape paintings, extended not only to the works of 18th century "artists" such as Yun Du-seo, Jeong Seon, Jo Yeong-seok, Sim Sa-jeong, Gang Se-hwang and Kim Hong-do but also to collection of 15th-17th century Joseon paintings. Their commentary activities raised the status of Joseon paintings to artworks of aesthetic value. Thus, collectors, as appreciative and discriminating consumers, and artists, as producers bestowing works with elegance, pleasure and freedom of spirit, all existed as individuals with senses of self-awareness as literati. In other words, artists and their patrons in the late Joseon period were the two main driving forces behind the development of Korean art history before the transplantation of the modern order to Korea during the Japanese colonial period.
Literati tastes, a trend that existed across East Asia from the 17th to the 19th century, led to the development of literati paintings in the Korean, Chinese and Japanese art worlds and the appearance of a range of cultural activity. This is demonstrated by the way the aesthetic tastes of East Asian middle-class urban dwellers, playing roles similar to those of the earlier Chinese merchant class, at a time then their region was entering a global capitalist order in its early stages of formation, brought universality to the literati culture of China's Jiangnan region in the Yuan and Ming dynasties. Ma Yueguan, Ma Yuelu, Kimura Kenkado and Kim Gwang-guk, as 18th century cultural figures representative of this phenomenon in China, Japan and Korea, are typical examples of commercial patrons who contributed to the development of literati paintings in their respective countries in accordance with painting trends that had been supported by Huizhou merchants in the 17th and 18th centuries after Xiang Yuanbian. Attempts to understand the role of collector Kim Gwang-guk, who collected a variety of Eastern and Western, older and contemporary works in the late-Joseon art market, with its indirect links to the global-historical context, as a patron of artists, allow us to understand that literati tastes, which led to the compilation of Seongnong Hwawon, were a complex phenomenon that pursued the ideals of Northern Song literati by way of Yuan and Ming literati painting styles tinged with contemporary late Ming and early Qing forms, and that, strengthened by such stimuli, these tastes brought a sense that Joseon's literati painting tradition equaled that of China. In the history of Korean painting, Kim Gwang-guk is a figure who demonstrates the contribution made by individual patrons to the development of literati paintings in early-modern East Asia and the importance of the merchant class at this time.
