Modality in Japanese-Korean and Korean-Japanese Novel Translation
This paper sheds light on how the semantic features in modal expressions are delivered and categorized in Japanese-Korean and Korean-Japanese novel translation. Proposition and modality comprise a sentence, and the modality shows the attitude of a speaker/writer. In particular, 'epistemic modality' can be put on a scale of 'Yes' to 'No', and it shows how confident a speaker/writer is. In Korean, the meaning can be delivered in such expressions as "I guess so", "It looks like that", "It might be" and so on. The speaker/writer's confidence level in modal expressions would vary from 'very confident' to 'not confident at all'. When it comes to 'deontic modality', which requires some reaction from listeners, the value of the modality varies as well from "You have to do it", "You may do it", "It would be good for you to do it", "I hope you do it" to "You should not do it."
In this paper, a specific genre, novel, is selected for modality analysis out of various kinds of genres because a various kinds of modal expressions can be examined in novels. Five Japanese novels that were on the top 100 list of novels published in Korea in 2011 and five Koreans novels that were published in Japan in around 2010 are selected for epistemic and deontic modality analysis, and the modal expressions extracted from each translation are analyzed and categorized in detail.
The types of modal expression translation are categorized into three: first, marked modal expressions in ST are translated into marked modal expressions in TT. Second, marked modal expressions in ST are translated into unmarked ones or other words in TT. Third, unmarked modal expressions or expressions that don't fit in the categorization of this study in ST are translated into marked modal expressions in TT. In further detail, the types are as follows; first, the value of modality in ST is maintained in TT. Second, the value of ST modality is enhanced in TT. Third, the value of ST modality is weakened in TT. Fourth, when the ST modality is not translated in TT, the modality is replaced with words that have similar modal meaning or it transforms into expressions with definite meanings. Data from the novels selected are compared and summed up to check if some specific data influence the overall statistics. The study goes on further because the same modality can be translated differently; translated at the end of a sentence, translated in adverbial forms, or translated in the middle of a sentence in modifying forms.
In the case of epistemic modality, 2,826 modal expressions in ST are reduced to 2,743 in TT in Japanese-Korean translation. 2,566 modal expressions in ST are significantly increased to 4,049 in TT in Korean-Japanese translation. In the case of deontic modality, 602 modal expressions in ST are reduced to 494 in TT in Japanese-Korean translation, and 671 modal expressions in ST are considerably increased to 733 in TT in Korean-Japanese translation. To sum up the analysis, both epistemic and deontic modal expressions are reduced in Japanese-Korean translation but increased in Korean-Japanese translation.
The value of modality is put on a scale of High-Median-Low, which is based on a previous research by Halliday(2004).
The modal expressions are translated differently depending on the values and grammatical forms of the expressions. Besides, it is found out that the semantic boundary of modality is not clear because some expressions are frequently translated into expressions with different values.
Besides, when translated texts and non-translated texts are compared, there are differences in the usage of modal expressions, which stems from pragmatics in writing rather than grammatical or semantic difference. Hence, the analysis of each expression shows that in some cases, TT is influenced by ST, which eventually results in a difference between translations and non-translations. In other cases, the difference results from the influence of non-translation, which results in a difference between ST and TT modal expressions.
Finally, this paper is meaningful in that it figures out the current status of modality translation by analyzing the modality by each expression and form in individual novels; furthermore, it shows a direction in translating modality. It is ultimately expected that this paper will contribute to the advancement of translation quality and education down the road.
