Since the early 2000s, discussions on the cultural ecosystem have been
the topic in the field of arts and culture. The goal of such discussions is
co-evolution of arts and culture by establishing a structure of a virtuous
circle in the field. In relation to cultural ecosystem, there are ecosystems of
ICT, art, and cultural industry, which consider the process of production,
distribution, and consumption as a value chain of cultural ecosystem from
the perspective of industry in most cases. However, there is difficulty in
assessing cultural ecosystem only as a structure of distributing commodities
as the value of art cannot be evaluated by its price.
The current paper aims to consider the process of distribution as
intermediation that connects different elements of cultural ecosystem and
with the changing meaning. In addition, the current paper will focus onthe role of intermediation in the production and consumption within
cultural ecosystem. The ecosystem is composed of production,
intermediation, consumption, and external environment. They interact with
each other and fortify the structure of the system through co-evolution
and self-regulation. In this system, material support is vital for vigorous
creative activities by cultural producers that form the basis of cultural
ecosystem. In this context, it is impossible to overlook the role of
intermediate space that provides creative inspirations and sites of
communication and discussion.
In Korea, Myeongdong between the 1930s and 1960s was a
representative case of such cultural intermediate space. After the Korean
War, artists had difficulties in making a living. This brought them to
Dabang (teahouse) where they could spend time with only a cup of
coffee. Dabangs in Myeongdong were the space of cultural mediation,
playing a wide range of different functions for cultural producers from
different fields of art. In addition, they held many cultural events, often
appearing as background of fictions.
Between the 1980s and 1990s, Hongdae (Hongik University) area played
a role of cultural intermediate space as concert venues called ‘live clubs’
for indie bands emerged in the area after they moved from Shinchon to
avoid regulatory enforcement. The clubs formed a cultural community
where there was no division between producers and consumers of cultural
creation. Experimental concerts, performances, and improvised happenings
were performed in the clubs. Cafes in the area also formed a unique
atmosphere, drawing artists to gather and exchange with each other in a
natural manner.
Currently, cultural intermediate spaces are in decline due to
industrialization and rising land price. There are few spaces where artists
spend their time as they did in the past. Nevertheless, new kinds of
cultural intermediate spaces emerging in forms of cafes that attempt tocontinue the culture of Dabang and salon and independent spaces. Some
artists formed communities in the form of cooperative, creating a new
cultural intermediate space. Experimental spaces created by creative
amateurs can also be considered as another form of cultural intermediate
space.
Outside of Korea, salons and cafes in France, cafes, restaurants, and
clubs in New York can be considered as cases of cultural intermediate
space. The common attribute of the spaces is that they are venues for
social and artistic exchange for artists, which offer opportunities of
forming different schools and communities. For example, salons in the
17th and 18th century France were egalitarian space often led by female
figures and played significant roles in the success of art works. Cafes in
the 18th and 19th century France were public sphere where anyone can
have his or her right to speech for the price of coffee. Especially, cafes
near Montmartre were schools for impressionist painters. In New York in
the 20th century, clubs and cafes were sites of discussion for artists who
exchanged and helped with each other through cultural communities that
were concentrated in the city.
The cultural intermediate spaces both in Korea and overseas were open
spaces where artists could communicate and exchange as well as present
exhibitions and performances. Moreover, such spaces were the source of
creative ideas and subjects as well as extracurricular education outside of
schools. In this way, cultural intermediate spaces contributed to the
development of arts and culture and to the establishment of
co-evolutionary structure of cultural ecology. Although some of the spaces
disappeared due to war, industrialization, and the rise of land price, there
are other spaces evolving upon the change of the time. As the concept of
culture changes upon the progress of time and social structure, the concept
of cultural intermediate space also constantly changes.
